Two months passed in silence. The memories of Jimin, of the injustice that had been done, still lingered in Taehyung’s heart like an open wound. But it wasn’t until a terrorist attack on his old base that everything came crashing back.
The base was hijacked by over 200 terrorists. A group of soldiers, including Taehyung, was sent to rescue the hostages and eliminate the threat.
[Boarding to old base - Morning]
The air was sharp with cold, the pale morning sun casting long shadows across the training grounds of Base 17. Soldiers moved briskly, their boots crunching against the frosty gravel. The base buzzed with an unusual tension—a mission briefing had just ended, and every officer knew this was not just another routine operation.
Taehyung stood by an armored vehicle, the collar of his uniform sharp and crisp against his neck. His eyes scanned the faces of the soldiers being assigned. Among them, Jeon Jungkook caught his attention. The younger man was leaning casually against the side of a truck, his rifle strapped securely across his chest. Despite the grim situation, Jungkook wore an almost cocky smirk, a stark contrast to Taehyung’s cold demeanor.
Jeon Jungkook (Past)
(noticing Taehyung’s gaze, he pushed off the truck and approached): "Looks like we’re on the same team this time, Captain."
Kim Taehyung (past)
(his tone icy): "Stay focused, Lieutenant Jeon. This isn’t a game."
Jeon Jungkook (Past)
(chuckled softly): "Who said I wasn’t focused? I’ve got your back, as always."
Taehyung didn’t respond. Instead, he turned toward the horizon, his sharp eyes narrowing. The location of the mission—his old base—loomed heavy on his mind. Memories of his time there flashed through him: the camaraderie of his unit, the sound of laughter in the mess hall, and Jimin’s face before everything fell apart. Now, that same base was a war zone, hijacked by over 200 terrorists who had taken the remaining soldiers and officers hostage.
[On the Road to the Old Base – Afternoon]
The convoy moved in silence, the hum of engines blending with the crunch of tires on the dirt road. Outside, the forest was dense, trees casting dappled shadows on the vehicles. The air smelled of pine and damp earth, but the tension inside the trucks was suffocating.
The mission was chaotic. Explosions rocked the ground. Gunfire echoed in the distance. The terrorists were armed and ruthless. More than 100 soldiers had been stationed at the base, but most of them were either dead or captured. The situation was desperate.
Kang Ha Nuel
Lieutenant Kang (sitting beside Taehyung): "Sir, the intel says there are over 200 hostiles inside. We’re outnumbered two to one."
Kim Taehyung (past)
(without looking at him): "We know the terrain better than they do. Numbers won’t matter if we strike smartly."
Jeon Jungkook (Past)
(from across the truck, his voice is light but firm): "What about the hostages? Are we saving them or..."
His voice trails off as he looks at Taehyung expectantly.
Kim Taehyung (past)
(his jaw tightens): "Our orders are clear: neutralize the threat. Hostages are secondary."
The words hung heavy in the air. Jungkook stared at Taehyung, his playful demeanor gone.
Jeon Jungkook (Past)
(softly): "Secondary? They’re our people."
Kim Taehyung (past)
(his gaze hardens): "We’re soldiers, Lieutenant. We have been ready for this day. Sacrifices are part of the job. Don’t let emotions cloud your judgment."
[At the Old Base – Nightfall]
The old base was unrecognizable. The once-pristine barracks were riddled with bullet holes, and the smell of smoke lingered in the cold night air. The moon hung low in the sky, casting an eerie glow over the compound. Taehyung crouched behind a crumbling wall with a small team, his breathing steady despite the chaos unfolding around him.
Kim Taehyung (past)
"Ready your weapons!"
Taehyung shouted to his squad as they entered the base. He led the charge, cutting through enemy lines with the efficiency and precision that only someone like him could manage.
Gunfire echoed in the distance, and the sound of shouted orders rang out. Jungkook was beside him, his expression grim but focused.
Jeon Jungkook (Past)
(whispering): "We’re being pinned down at the north entrance. What’s the plan, Captain?"
Kim Taehyung (past)
(checking his watch, his voice a low growl): "Push forward. No hesitation. Split into groups and cut through their defenses."
The team moved swiftly, weaving through the shadows. Explosions lit up the night sky as the soldiers fought their way deeper into the base. The air was thick with gunpowder and smoke, and the cries of injured soldiers filled the air.
The team fought valiantly, but the odds were stacked against them. The soldiers were outnumbered, and despite their best efforts to save their comrades, the terrorists’ hold on the base remained strong. Taehyung knew they couldn’t afford to lose any more lives.
Kim Taehyung (past)
"We need to get to the core."
Taehyung ordered, voice steady even as the tension built around him. He could feel Jungkook’s presence behind him, his reliable partner on this mission. They made their way into the heart of the base, every step calculated, every movement deliberate.
[Inside the Base Core – An Hour Later]
Taehyung’s group had reached the base core, the heart of the compound. Here, the walls were intact, untouched by the chaos outside. The silence was unnerving. Taehyung signaled his team to hold back as he approached a hidden door—a place only he and a few others had known about.
He placed his hand against the cold metal, his expression unreadable.
Jeon Jungkook (Past)
(behind him, frowning): "What is this place? This wasn’t on the map."
Kim Taehyung (past)
(his voice cold): "It wasn’t meant to be."
But then Taehyung made a choice. His eyes narrowed as he scanned the surroundings, feeling a shift in the air.
Kim Taehyung (past)
(his voice low): "I’m going in alone."
Jeon Jungkook (Past)
"Taehyung, no!"
Jungkook protested, grabbing his arm.
Jeon Jungkook (Past)
"It’s too dangerous!"
But Taehyung pulled away, his gaze hardening.
Kim Taehyung (past)
"I need some answers, I will come back soon. Stay connected with others."
And with that, he disappeared into the shadows, leaving his squad behind.
The door creaked open, revealing a hidden chamber. Inside, several higher-ranking officers huddled together, their faces pale with fear. They froze when they saw Taehyung.
Taehyung found what he had been looking for. Hidden behind a false wall were the higher-ups he had once served under. They were huddled together, frightened and trying to hide their tracks. But it was too late. Taehyung had already uncovered their betrayal.
Someone
Officer Park (stammering): "C-Captain Kim? You’re alive?"
Kim Taehyung (past)
(stepping inside, his gun raised): "I am. Unfortunately for you."
Someone
"Taehyung, what are you doing here?"
One of the generals asked, fear evident in his voice.
Kim Taehyung (past)
(blank expression): "To take your life."
Someone
Officer Lee (panicking): "Wait! You don’t understand—"
Kim Taehyung (past)
(his voice like ice): "I understand perfectly. You’re the reason my family was destroyed. The reason Jimin died."
Taehyung’s eyes burned with a fury that could not be contained.
Kim Taehyung (past)
"You think you can escape your sins? Your crimes against my family? Against Jimin?!"
Kim Taehyung (past)
He stepped forward, his hand tightening around the gun at his side.
Someone
"Taehyung, don’t—"
Another officer tried to stop him, but it was too late.
Without hesitation, he pulled the trigger. The sound of gunfire echoed in the chamber as Taehyung took his revenge. Each shot was precise, his expression cold and unflinching.
An eye for an eye. His hands shook as the adrenaline surged through his veins, but he didn’t stop. He couldn’t stop. Not after everything they had happen.
The base was set to explode. Taehyung and his group planted the charges, watching as the foundation of his old world crumbled into dust. The smoke rose high into the sky, a memorial for the fallen soldiers, for his family, and for Jimin.
The base was reduced to rubble, smoke rising into the pale morning sky. Taehyung stood outside the ruins, his face illuminated by the flickering flames. The air was heavy with the scent of ash and blood. Jungkook approached him cautiously, his face a mix of confusion and concern.
Jeon Jungkook (Past)
(quietly): "Captain... what did you do in there?"
Kim Taehyung (past)
(not meeting his gaze): "What had to be done."
Jungkook’s eyes searched his face, but Taehyung’s expression was unreadable. Without another word, Taehyung turned and walked away, his figure disappearing into the smoke. The ruins of the base would become a memorial, but for Taehyung, it was just another scar—a reminder of the family and comrades he could never bring back.
As the dust settled and the base was reduced to rubble, Taehyung stood alone, looking out at the destruction. His revenge had been carried out, but it felt hollow. No amount of death, no amount of destruction could bring Jimin back. No matter how much blood had been spilled, the mud that had stained his family’s name could never truly be washed away.
Taehyung’s heart was heavy. His thirst for power, for control, grew stronger. His regret festered in his chest, gnawing at him every night. Sleep eluded him. The faces of the fallen, the cries of his comrades, haunted him.
He had avenged them. He had avenged Jimin. But in the end, Taehyung was left with nothing but his own coldness. He had become what he hated—a monster driven by vengeance, with no way to turn back.
The world had moved on, but Taehyung was trapped in the past, forever chasing something that could never be undone.
