Chapter 1 - Young And Beautiful

"Melanie Young! Get your head out of the clouds, please! Class is in session!" My eyes slowly turned back towards my physics teacher who was explaining astrological phenomena as slowly as a tortoise racing a 100m sprint. As I looked into his eyes, I pointed towards the board and smiled. "That's wrong. I'm thirsty, so I'm going to head home."

Getting up out of my desk, everyone seemed amused by my nonchalant behaviour while Mr Davis was trying his best to get me to sit back down. I really don't get any of the teachers in this school. Don't they realise that going to school is just useless for me? Anyway, let me introduce myself. My name is Melanie, or as I prefer to call me, Mimi Young. I'm 18-years-old and I live on the outskirts of Tokyo, Japan. Despite my appearance, I am Japanese by birth.

My parents moved here just a month before I was born, and they were both from France originally. At first, it was pretty hard living in a country where no one looked like you but I soon gained the trust of my classmates, neighbours and friends and my life went great. My parents died when I was little and left me a bunch of money, which I immediately invested into my research.

I've won countless prizes, including a nobel prize on astrological phenomena. I've published many books, and I'm kind of a celebrity in my hometown. Lately, I've been working on something that some believed was impossible. A time machine. Yeah, I know what you're thinking. Such a childish idea and dream which will never come true. Some say that time is an idea and doesn't even exist. Others think that everything revolves around it. Either way, I want to break through that barrier and I know that I'm the only one in this world who can do it. It's just a matter of finding the right formula...

I reached my house earlier than expected. Traffic was in my favour today and even my sweet pork buns were warm once I got to the restaurant. Everything has gone my way today. As I entered into the house, I ran right towards my laboratory. Most houses have a living room, or a games room. I have a laboratory filled with billions of yen worth of equipment. My sponsors are, let's say, quite generous when it comes to gifts.

I then cracked my knuckles and got started. Writing different formulas on my chalkboard wall, I inputted them into my computer and watched my machine charge up and then fizzle out. Yet another failure, but I'm not worried. I've got millions of combinations left to test. More testing, more trying, more failing... all of those elements are what I am most suitable at doing. I'm a stubborn little girl, I don't give up until I've proved someone wrong.

I'm a pretty girl. My facial features make me quite appealing to the opposite gender yet I've never quite met someone who can give me the thrill that I desire. I've given up on trying to find a man who can keep up with me. After all, who would be crazy enough to marry a woman like me?
