Episode # 5
Kai stood before the floor to ceiling window of his office, gazing out at the city below.
He was still haunted by the image of Liv from the night before her quiet determination, the soft curve of her stomach.
The door of his office creaked open, and Lisa entered, carrying a folder. She looked up, waiting for him to speak.
Lisa Joseph (The manager)
Did you ask for me, sir?
She inquired, her voice polite but professional.
Kai turned slowly, his expression unreadable as always.
His fingers drummed light against the seat armrest, a sign of his growing tension.
Kai Thompson (ML)
Last night, I saw a lady working by herself.
Lisa's eyes raised an eyebrow, a slight frown forming.
Lisa Joseph (The manager)
Oh, the new girl?
He paused, letting the weight of his words hang in the air for a moment before continuing.
Kai Thompson (ML)
I want you to fire her.
Lisa's eyes widened in shock.
Lisa Joseph (The manager)
Fire her? But why, sir?
Kia's gaze hardened, his jaw tightening slightly.
Kai Thompson (ML)
She's pregnant.
Kai Thompson (ML)
I can't allow a pregnant woman to be doing all that work. She needs to be resting.
Lisa opened her mouth to respond, but he cut her off sharply, his tone commanding.
Kai Thompson (ML)
Fire her.
She hestiated, her mind racing.
Lisa Joseph (The manager)
But... she's a good worker,sir. I don't think...
Kai Thompson (ML)
I said fire her.
He repeated,his voice unwavering.
Kai Thompson (ML)
And don't question me.
Lisa's expression flickered briefly,but she quickly masked it with professional nod.
Lisa Joseph (The manager)
Understood. I'll take care of it.
Without another word, she turned and walked out of the office, the door closing softly behind her.
Kai sat in silence, the image of Liv still lingering in his mind.
Liv sits across from Lance, a seasoned lawyer, who glanced over a file before meeting her gaze.
Her face is tired, worn down by the days of pregnancy and the emotional toll of her situation.
Liv shifts uneasily in her seat, her hands clenched on her lap. She's been carrying a child that was never meant to be hers.
Lance sets the file down and sighs.
Lance Joseph ( the lawyer)
Liv, this is tricky. Legally, you don't have full rights over the child you're carrying. But you have a choice.
She frowns, her eyes narrowing.
Liv Zara (FL)
What kind of choice?
Lance Joseph ( the lawyer)
You can either pay $50,000 upfront to continue fighting for full custody,or...you can adopt the child yourself, or raise it.
Lance Joseph ( the lawyer)
The law's not going to make the woman that made you carry the baby pay you for the pain she's caused, not unless you can prove more than just emotional distress.
She blinks at him, her voice quivering.
Liv Zara (FL)
You're telling me I have to pay for justice?
Lance Joseph ( the lawyer)
That's how it works sometimes, Liv. You're in a tight spot,and unless you have that money, the route might be to adopt raise the child yourself or abort. But if you're not ready for that, you can try to take legal action, though you'll need to prove that woman's actions were negligent or harmful enough to demand compensation.
Liv face falls as she processes the information.
Liv Zara (FL)
I...I can't afford that much money. I just started working.
She said softly, almost to herself.
Liv Zara (FL)
I can't even support the baby. How am I supposed to raise it on my own?
Lance meets her gaze,his tone firm but understanding.
Lance Joseph ( the lawyer)
That's the hard part. But you do have options. If you truly feel that woman is responsible for the harm this has caused you, we can try to take her to court.
Lance Joseph ( the lawyer)
But you need that money. Otherwise,you either abort the child or let someone else take custody or take the baby yourself.
Liv's eyes fill with tears.
Liv Zara (FL)
she never wanted the baby. Now she won't even help. I want her to pay for what she's done. She ruined my life.
Her voice voice cracked with raw emotion she's been holding inside.
Lance leans forward, his experience softer now.
Lance Joseph ( the lawyer)
I get it. But the law doesn't care about your pain the way you want it to. If you're not ready to raise the child, If that woman doesn't want the child then your options are limited to either taking custody yourself or letting the system place the baby elsewhere.
She stands abruptly, pacing the small room.
Liv Zara (FL)
She doesn't get to walk away from this. She doesn't get to pretend like she didn't cause this mess. She should pay for what she's done to me...and this baby.
Lance sighs, folding his hands.
Lance Joseph ( the lawyer)
You're angry. I understand that. But the reality is, you need resources to fight back. I can help you with that,but it's not going to be easy. Either you raise the child or you get her to help. But right now,the choice is yours.
Liv's face hardened with determination. She stopped pacing and looked at him
Liv Zara (FL)
Fine. I'll raise the baby. But I'm not giving up on making her pay. She's going to regret this.
Lance Joseph ( the lawyer)
I'll get the paperwork started. But remember, you're making a decision that'll change your life.And hers.
Liv's eyes lock onto his.
Liv Zara (FL)
I didn't ask for this life, Lance. But I'm not going to let her ruin it without paying the price.
