Episode # 2
The cups and soft murmur of conversation seemed distant to Pamela as she sat across from her mother.
Pamela's fingers twisted around the coffee cup in front of her, but she didn't touch it.
Her mind was elsewhere, consumed with a thousand thoughts.
The message from Liv still echoed in her head, but it was quickly being drowned out by the frustration that was building inside her.
Her mother, elegantly dressed as always, sat across from her, eyes sharp and calculating.
She had barely touched her own cup, instead watching Pamela with an almost impatient air.
Ren Faire (Palema's mom)
Pam.
Her mother began, her voice cool and composed.
Ren Faire (Palema's mom)
This is your responsibility. You knew what were you signing up for.
Pamela's fingers tightened around the ceramic.
Pamela Faire
I didn't think it would be like this.
She muttered her eyes avoiding her mother's.
Ren Faire (Palema's mom)
It feels...overwhelming. This pregnancy... it's just...too much.
Her mother's gaze hardened, the smile she wore so often replaced by a hint of steel.
Ren Faire (Palema's mom)
Don't be foolish. She'll be carrying the child that will be the heir to the Thompson empire, Pam. You think you can just walk away from that?
Her mother leaned in slightly, her voice lowering as if trying to make her words more impactful.
Ren Faire (Palema's mom)
That boy can't be the sole heir. He needs a sibling. And you will give him that sibling.
Ren Faire (Palema's mom)
You made a commitment. You knew was it meant to be part of that family, and sometimes sacrifices are necessary for the greater good. You're not only fighting for that family legacy but for your future, our future that baby is necessary.
Pamela didn't know what to say anymore. She looked down at her hands, fidgeting with the napkin in front of her.
The belly was growing so fast and every time I looked down.
I couldn't help but smile. It was a beautiful thing, carrying this little life.
The excitement was always there, bubbling up. I remember when we went to the ultrasound.
Pamela was with me, of course. She smiled as we saw the baby's tiny heat beating on the screen.
Pamela Faire
Look, it's perfect.
Pamela whispered, her hand on my stomach.
I nodded, trying to feel happy for her. But something felt off.
I had asked her before, but she never really told me who the father was.
Everytime I brought it up, she would change the subject, like she didn't want to talk about it.
Liv Zara (FL)
You're sure everything's alright?
I asked her one day, my voice tight with worry.
She replied, brushing me off with a smile.
Pamela Faire
Everything's fine.
But I couldn't shake the feeling that something wasn't right. I kept wondering if I had made the right choice. If had done enough to help.
Looking at the tiny life growing in me, everytime I am alone.
Then, one afternoon, the nightmare happened. Pamela was sitting in front of me, eyes cold.
Pamela Faire
I don't want the baby.
She said, her voice steady, like it was nothing.
Pamela Faire
I'm not keeping it.
My heart sank. I couldn't breathe for a moment.
Liv Zara (FL)
What do you mean? You can't just...
Pamela Faire
I don't want it, okay? It's not my problem. You kill it and go far away from here, this city.
The words hit harder than anything I would ever imagined. I thought I was helping, but now I felt more lost than ever.
