Episode 17

A few days passed and Kate managed to recover after undergoing some tests and ensuring that everything was fine with the baby.

Since the funeral, she had not heard from James nor had she tried to find out about him.

Theresa, her fellow obstetrician, knowing Kate's situation, offered her a room in her apartment.

Kate even considered refusing, but ended up thinking that it would be more complicated to explain her story and why she didn't need a place to live than to simply accept.

Just when she thought everything was calming down, her connection to James came back to haunt her when she received a call from Sarah's lawyer asking her to attend the reading of Sarah's will.

Kate refused, but the lawyer told her that Sarah had left a letter and therefore it would be important for Kate to be present.

Reluctantly, she ended up agreeing to go, already knowing that she would have annoyances.

On the day of the reading, which took place at the house, all the relatives were present, as expected, and when Kate arrived, she was greeted with hostile stares.

She ignored them and sat down in the only available seat, next to James. He didn't say anything and looked dejected, with dark circles under his eyes and messy hair.

Kate didn't feel sorry, thinking that she couldn't worry about him now, she had bigger concerns for her future.

James looked at her, thinking that she was doing very well, that she didn't seem to be suffering from the breakup, what he didn't understand is that Kate had learned to always appear strong and hide her feelings.

"Well, now that Mrs. Kate has arrived, we can begin," says the lawyer.

"Sir, Sara didn't leave anything for her, did she? She's not even part of our family! She's just a gold digger who infiltrated us," Aline says and receives a piercing look from the lawyer over his glasses.

"Miss, didn't you hear we're going to start the reading?"

"I heard! But I already want to say in advance that I will not agree with anything that is there to receive and I am already willing to go to court to annul this will."

Aline looks disdainfully at Kate, who crosses her arms and ignores her.

"Well, let's begin. First I must read the letter that Mrs. Sara left."

"Dear relatives, it's a pleasure to be with you again... I mean, if you're reading this letter, I'm probably not present in the flesh anymore, but certainly in spirit. I couldn't wait for the time when I could haunt each one of you at dawn. If you feel your sheets being pulled while you sleep, you can be sure it was me."

"I even got goosebumps, look!" Aline says, looking around suspiciously. "I'm going to call an exorcist, not even dead will that witch Aunt Sara leave us alone, will she?"

Kate looks at Aline, wanting to dig her nails into her face, with such disrespect.

"Aline, if you open your mouth to talk shit one more time, I'll throw you out the window," James says, massaging his temples.

"Excuse me, cousin. I didn't mean it badly, but it's just that your mother was never close to the family, was she? She never helped anyone..."

"Aline, I'm serious..."

James gives his cousin a menacing look, which eventually shuts her up.

"Go on!" James says, waving to the lawyer.

"When I was deciding what to put in my will, I asked myself who deserved to receive anything, so I thought about the memories I had with my dear siblings, Berta, Jorge and Sebastian. Very close siblings, you know? United to try to sabotage me.

When I got pregnant with James, they ran to tell everyone, saying that I was a slut, that I didn't even know who the father of my child was. When my husband claimed our son and we got married, they went to my wedding saying that if I hadn't gotten pregnant, I would never have been able to get married.

When they discovered that my husband was an important person, they started flattering me just so I could get some important position in our company and when I said no, they called me a shrew.

That is, I was always surrounded by snakes in my family. When I got sick, they rooted for my death and didn't even visit me one day in the hospital.

I received affection from my only son, a meathead, but deep down a good man.

And I received from Kate, my daughter-in-law and a daughter in every sense but blood, who made my days of pain so much better with her attention, affection and care.

And that's how I decided on each paragraph of my will.

What do my dear relatives think they will receive, huh? Place your bets!"

Kate shook her head, wanting to laugh at Sarah's mockery. Even after death, she managed to be provocative.

"Well, Mrs. Weyland's will is quite short, 50% of everything, except this house, goes to James."

"Are we going to keep this house?! That would be amazing! I want James's room!" Aline shouts and James slams his fist on the table, startling her and silencing her.

"No, you are not going to stay with this house, this house is now the property of Mrs. Kate."

James faced Kate and Sarah's relatives began to argue.

"The other 50% of everything also goes to Mrs. Kate."

"This is absurd! I will ask to have this will annulled. This woman is not even part of our family and she and James are about to get divorced," one of Sarah's brothers stands up, protesting.

"Divorce or not, 50% of everything goes to Mrs. Kate."

"I understand that fifty percent of everything goes to James, but the other fifty percent should be divided among the family. I doubt the judge will allow this."

"If you want to file a lawsuit, go ahead. But I should point out that it will be money thrown away. Mrs. Sara already made the entire donation while she was alive and that cannot be annulled."

Everyone looked at Kate, terrified.

"Return all the money you took, girl. Or we'll make your life a living hell," says Sarah's sister.

"Hell..." Kate says and smiles. "Having relatives like you must be hell, poor Sara..."

"What are you saying, you gold digger! You scammer!" Aline yells.

"I'm saying I don't want any more of you in my house!"

"I want to see you have the courage to get us out of here!"

"I don't touch radioactive waste, I leave it to those who are prepared." Kate picks up her cell phone and makes a call. "Hello, this is Kate Vieira and I'd like to request a patrol car to my house, I have some intruders in my living room."

The relatives looked at each other, frightened.

"Oh, they'll be here in five minutes, great!" Kate says and hangs up the phone.

"No need to call the police, we're leaving." One of Sarah's brothers gets up and straightens his jacket.

The others also get up and leave.

James gets up last and says:

"I'll go get my things."

"No, I didn't tell you to leave."

"I'm not going to live here with you."

"Neither am I... I just wanted to get rid of the cockroaches. Sometimes it's good to show that we don't bow our heads to just anyone, even if my intention is not to stay here. I just want to get some books of mine, but I'm tired, I'll come and get them another day."

Kate gets up and gets ready to leave.

"Kate, wait! We need to talk."

"Oh yes, of course! We need to talk about the divorce, I'll be back with the papers soon."
