James furrowed his brows as he watched Kate ripping the IV from her vein. She got up unsteadily, holding her belly as she walked towards him and pushed him.
Kate couldn't move him an inch, but she kept trying to push him while saying:
"I hate you, James, because even though I saw how much you despised our marriage, deep down I still believed that everything could work out. I believed that Sara was right, that you learned from her to be a real man, but you're just a boy!" The tears that Kate had held back for so long flowed and she continued to push him. "Get out of here, I don't need you! I've always been alone and continuing alone was what I already expected for me, I would be surprised if you wanted to be my real husband. Get out of here with all your lies and excuses, respect my pain!"
James looked at Kate's face, it was clear and crystalline, you could see the whirlwind of emotions. He had never seen her like this, had never seen so much suffering in her eyes.
He stood there, letting her try to push and hit him, not reacting, just standing still, but inside he was fighting the urge to hug her. Yes, he wanted to hug her and stay that way for a long time, he was also in a lot of pain, that hug wouldn't just be to comfort Kate, it would be for him too.
At the same time, he felt that he was conditioned to that woman, that he should resist, that if he hugged her he would end up convincing her to believe his lies.
And she was pregnant, yes, that thought hit him like a punch in the stomach. Kate was pregnant and the child couldn't be his.
At that moment he walked away, seeing Kate lose her balance and almost fall. She was weak from the sedatives, but she still managed to hold on to the wall, preventing the fall.
They looked at each other one last time, looks of sadness, anger and hurt. James walked away.
Kate carefully went back to bed, remorseful for putting her child's life at risk because of James.
She put the IV back in her vein and stared at the ceiling, wondering what she was going to do from now on. She didn't need Sara's fortune, she had her own inheritance. She just lived mixed with simple people, because she didn't want to receive attention just for being an heiress but, for being a dedicated doctor. Therefore, Kate knew that nothing of value would be lacking for that baby, but the best thing was that there would be no lack of love, which was the only thing she didn't have in life.
She caressed her belly and thought "Hang in there, are you okay? Be strong in there, because here it's going to be a whirlwind, mommy will fight for you."
Kate calmed down and fell asleep, in the morning she received a visit from the obstetrician, Dr. Teresa, a very close colleague of Kate's.
"How is the newest mom feeling?" Teresa said as she entered, happy for Kate, knowing that she had been trying to get pregnant for some time. She herself had helped Kate with fertility tests and prescribed some vitamins to help her conceive.
"My head still hurts and everything is spinning... but I'm fine. I didn't know pregnancy was like this. When patients came in complaining, I confess I didn't take it so seriously."
"See what it's like to feel it firsthand? You must be tired, you need to get more rest and take some vitamins that I'm going to prescribe. Maybe that will lessen the symptoms."
"There's no way I can de-stress now..." Kate said and her eyes welled up. "Sara, when are they taking the body?"
"Oh, Kate... it's just... My God, that's why you shouldn't have friends as patients, as a doctor I can't give you this news, but as a friend..."
"What happened, Teresa?!" Kate said, already trying to sit up in bed.
"James, he... he took the body yesterday and the wake is already happening this morning."
Kate shook her head, swallowing back tears and the lump in her throat, then ripped out her IV and prepared to get up.
"Stop, Kate! You can't leave, you're under observation, you risk having a miscarriage... You know how fragile pregnancy is in the first few months."
"I have to go! I won't forgive myself for not saying my last goodbye to Sara! My baby will be fine, Teresa! She will be fine!"
There was no way Teresa could hold Kate back, when she decided on something, there was no convincing her otherwise. Teresa just gave her an anti-abortion pill, which Kate took immediately, got dressed and went to the wake.
The wake was taking place at the mansion, the place was bustling with many important people walking through the garden and into the house. Kate walked past them and they all looked at her suspiciously, not knowing her. Kate thought James had probably invited people from outside the family, partners and people who had dealt with Sara, when she was a respected woman as an administrator.
As soon as she entered the hall where the wake was taking place, everyone turned to look at Kate and she found no friendly glances.
Kate felt herself in the wolves' den and the feeling was that she shouldn't be there.
The only person who looked at her with pity was Maycon, and James avoided looking at her, as if ignoring her presence.
Kate watched James's arm being held by Miranda and felt her heart bleed a little more, but she didn't let on and continued walking to where Sara's body lay.
She didn't hold back her tears and leaned over the coffin and began to say her goodbyes in a low voice.
"How did the security guards let this gold digger in here!" Kate heard an irritating voice behind her, it was Aline, James's cousin and Miranda's friend.
"James, call security, I'm feeling uncomfortable with this woman here," Miranda said, her voice sweet and polite.
James didn't answer, while Maycon looked at him.
Realizing that his friend wasn't going to defend Kate, Maycon said, "Security didn't stop her because she's probably the owner of this house. You, as guests, should behave as such, don't you think?"
