Episode 15

MIRANDA

MAYCON

...

Kate ignored all the buzz her arrival had caused, she just wanted to say goodbye.

"James, people are looking. Are you going to let Maycon say like that, in front of me, that that's his wife? What will they think I am? His mistress?" Miranda says, seeing some people point at her and whisper.

"If you don't want to be seen as my lover, let go of my arm, Mirando..." James said low and threateningly, at that moment he thought that no one was respecting his pain, no one was respecting his mother's farewell. The only person who seemed to share his pain was Kate.

"But... what do you mean! Isn't she just a lying wife? I'm not a mistress!" Miranda raises her voice, losing her pose, and Maycon says:

"Oh, please go away, Miranda! You don't know how to respect this moment."

"No, I'm not leaving! I'm not going, not Aline!" Miranda looked at James' cousin for her approval and Aline, who didn't want to go against her rich friend, immediately sided with her.

"No! Miranda isn't leaving, she's going to be James' future wife as soon as he divorces her!" Aline points at Kate, who looks at her with a menacing gaze. She didn't like the scandal those two were making at the funeral either.

"Look, did you see that, James? Did you see the way she looked at me? She looked like a wild animal!" Miranda complained, trying to get James' attention, who remained impassive.

"This is already unbearable!" Aline takes the lead and heads towards Kate.

She grabs Kate's arm, trying to pull her away, but Kate reacts automatically, turning around with an open hand and slapping Aline, knocking her off balance and onto the floor.

"You're both unbearable, you don't know how to behave at a wake. Keep quiet and respect the deceased, or I'll shut you both up by shoving these flowers down your throats!"

Instantly the buzz stopped and Maycon smiled, nodding in the affirmative. Miranda nudged James and he just pushed her away from him. Aline's face turned red from the slap and from embarrassment as people looked approvingly at Kate and disapprovingly at her.

Kate leaned back in the coffin and said her last words to Sara, that she would keep her last promise, that she would be the best mother in the world to her beloved grandson and that she would always tell him stories about his grandmother.

Afterwards, no longer able to stand the strong smell of flowers, Kate got up and left with her hand over her mouth. She staggered a little, due to the weakness she still felt. She held on to the wall, but even when she was down, she looked dignified.

Maycon looked at James, hoping that he would at least help her, but realizing that he wouldn't move, he ran to help Kate.

"Come on, hold my arm." he says calmly.

"No, thank you, I don't need any help." Kate refuses.

"Just let me help, I have no second thoughts."

Reluctantly, Kate took his arm and he helped her out and down the steps in front of the door.

The fresh air outside filled her lungs and Kate felt better, until the package took hold of her.

She despaired, pushed Maycon and staggered over to a flower bed and began to vomit.

Maycon rushed to help her and as he gathered her hair in his hand, preventing it from falling into his mouth, he heard a threatening voice behind him.

"Don't think about it, Maycon. Don't you think it's enough to grab her hair like that? Let me take over from here." It was James, looking at the scene with his eyebrows knitted together.

Maycon hesitated and James took his place. Kate didn't even notice, her ears were ringing and her chest ached with the spasms of vomiting. She hadn't eaten anything since the day before and all she could drink was water. But her body still insisted on expelling everything in her stomach.

James held his hair and felt it between his fingers. It was soft, thick and with thick dark brown strands. He felt disgusted by the sensation of familiarity and the satisfaction of touching her hair. He felt like he should let go and leave, because he was already going crazy with the imminent separation and the idea that he would never touch her again.

But he didn't let her go, because Maycon was still nearby and he couldn't bear to see another man touching his wife's hair, he wasn't ready for that sight yet. So, between him and Maycon helping Kate, it was best for him to swallow his pride and help her.

After having nothing left to do, Kate finally stops, bumping into James.

She doesn't say anything, just walks away abruptly.

Kate turns around and walks carefully towards the garage...

As James looks away from her, Maycon approaches:

"Go on!"

"No. Let her go, isn't that what she wants?"

"You told me that you told her never to appear in front of you again."

"And she told me the same thing."

"What if she never really appears in front of you again?"

James thought for a few moments until he said:

"You're the worst bore I've ever met in my life, Maycon."

Then he ran up to Kate and picked her up, surprising her.

Kate struggled and punched him, begging him to let her go.

"What do you want? Fall down on my doorstep and accuse me of being to blame for the loss of the child or do you want to have a traffic accident, lose that baby just to erase the proof of your betrayal? No, I won't let you do that, I'll take you back to the hospital myself."
