I put my hand in front of my face, trying to hide the sight of my mother inside the car. She was looking at me with an expression of disapproval and happiness at the same time, which made me feel guilty and irritated. I looked towards Christophe, seeking support, but he seemed oblivious to the situation. He smiled and waved to my mother, as if he were the perfect son-in-law. I felt a wave of indignation and resentment, not knowing how to deal with that situation.
"What the hell are we doing here?" I asked, irritated, and he frowned, not understanding. He looked around as if searching for something that justified our presence in that place. It was
His eyes sparkled and his body came swiftly towards me. He stole another kiss from me, taking my breath away.
"Visiting my mother-in-law, silly." He said playfully, and winked at me.
"You're not my boyfriend and she's not your mother-in-law," I replied, irritated, but I tried to disguise it when my mother simply opened the car door, yelling.
"You ungrateful child! You never came back to your mother's house," she shouted, her voice shrill, and pulled me out of the car.
Mom hugged me and rocked me, making a funny pout with her lips. I wanted to laugh, but I was extremely nervous.
"Mom... no exaggeration. I was here at Christmas," I said, trying to free myself from her suffocating embrace. I pulled away from her and saw Regina's honey-colored eyes sparkle as she saw Christophe, who had already walked around the car to reach us.
"Boy, your family fed you well!" she praised, pulling him into a hug as well. "Look at this handsome young man! The best match for Heleninha."
"Diana, Mom, he's not my match," I protested, blushing with shame. He wasn't my boyfriend, just a stranger who could turn into a giant wolf and protect me from invisible forces while... I pretended the marrying him part didn't exist.
"Why not? You haven't convinced her yet?" she asked, releasing Christophe and looking him in the eye. "I told you the girl was stubborn."
She winked at him, as if she were an accomplice. He smiled awkwardly and looked at me, not knowing what to say.
"For God's sake, I'd rather be torn apart by the Farejadores right now," I muttered in desperation. I grabbed my backpack from the truck and tried to put it on my back, but Christophe took it from me with a kind gesture. He looked at me with a reassuring smile and said:
"Don't worry, I'll take care of that. You just need to relax and enjoy the moment."
"Joy," I said ironically, rolling my eyes. I saw no reason to celebrate.
"Let's go, kids! I've made plenty of food for you to enjoy. The walk to Sombria is long," she said enthusiastically.
"What is Sombria?" I asked curiously, and Christophe immediately perked up to lean towards me, but I put my hand on his chest, stopping him from stealing another kiss. "Mom?"
I insisted she answer, looking at her. My mother watched us with a serious look, but there was a small glimmer of hope in her eyes.
"That's where he comes from," she said, pointing to Christophe, her voice low and solemn. "That's where you're going.... Remember that junk room under your grandfather's house that we always forbade you from entering, saying it had a lot of rats and cockroaches? Well, there's a little door there that leads to a huge tunnel and it all takes you to Sombria."
"Great! First, I thought we were going to live in the woods, and now I find out I'm going to become a mole," I complained sarcastically and disgustedly.
My mother opened the door to Grandpa's house and I saw the old man sitting in his usual armchair, reading a newspaper. He looked up and greeted me with a smile. Christophe laughed at my words as if I had said something hilarious, and my mother joined in with an infectious laugh.
"It's not quite like that," he said, wrapping his arms around my waist and kissing me on the cheek. "You'll be surprised."
He winked at me, his eyes mysterious and confident. He seemed to know something I didn't.
"That tunnel serves more as a portal," said my grandfather, his voice tired but firm. He slowly rose from his chair, leaning on his cane, and hugged me with affection and tenderness. I could hear the amulets around his neck clinking, making a metallic sound. "That's why the way is long."
"Are we talking about how long of a walk, more or less?" I asked nervously, even though it was something I didn't want to know.
Christophe stepped in front of me before anyone could answer. He surprised me with a kiss, something he had been trying to give me ever since they started answering for him. He pulled away and gave a wide, satisfied smile.
"An hour, maybe more," he said triumphantly.
"You two can stay in Heleninha's room. You're engaged anyway," my mother was already in the kitchen, stirring her pots, and yelling at us.
"Mom!" I scolded her again, embarrassed. Regina kept pushing us together as if she wanted us to get married right away.
"Sorry to say dear, but she's right," my grandfather interjected, laughing at the situation. He winked at me as if he were an accomplice.
Christophe was so radiant with his helpers that I felt like punching him, but I wouldn't dare do that to such a big man.
"Stop smiling, boy. We have nothing to do with each other," I said, emphasizing the words, and he raised an eyebrow.
"You are mine, Heleninha, and at some point you will accept it." Christophe winked at me and walked across the house towards the bedrooms. "Di's room is the one I was sleeping in before, mother-in-law?"
"That's the one!" she yelled from the kitchen, and my face fell as I heard that information. I remembered the message my mother had sent me days before.
"He was here and he's coming after you. I warned you."
"Mom!"
