It wasn't easy to persuade Seu Pedro that the giant, bleeding man was my boyfriend who had defended me from vandals. The security cameras were off before the attack, so there was no way to prove the fight between Christophe and whatever had invaded the building.
Seu Pedro thought the wounded, completely naked giant was one of the thugs. Luckily, after much argument, he accepted that we were a couple and that Christophe's clothes had been torn in the fight. The poor man even gave me a hand carrying that hulk to my apartment, with the help of a few other men.
Arriving at my apartment, I opened the door and pushed Christophe inside, thanking the men who helped me. Pedro looked at me with a mixture of curiosity and concern and asked if I needed anything.
"No, thank you, Seu Pedro. I'll take care of him", I said, trying to sound confident.
"Are you sure, my dear? He's in bad shape. Don't you want to call an ambulance?" He insisted.
"No, there's no need. He'll be fine. He's... different." I replied, not knowing how to explain that a needle probably wouldn't penetrate those muscles.
"Different how?" He asked, arching an eyebrow.
"Well... He uses a lot of steroids, you know? And he's ashamed to admit it at the hospital." I said, slamming the door in the man's face before he could ask any more questions.
I turned to Christophe, who was sprawled on the couch, gasping for air. He opened his eyes and gave me a weak smile, which didn't hide his pain.
"Hi, girlfriend." He said, his voice hoarse and tired.
"Funny... Was that you? You're gigantic." I said, amazed and surprised. He laughed and agreed but I saw a flicker of pain on his face. "Are you okay?"
"I'm fine. I just need to rest a little," he said in a hoarse and tired voice, trying to calm me down. Christophe reached out to me, but I stood frozen with my hand on the doorknob as if I was afraid someone would come in at any moment.
"What was that, Christophe? What invaded the building?" I asked, my eyes still wide and my heart racing, remembering that horrible creature that almost killed us.
"It was two trackers. They are the eyes and ears of a pack that has been trying to dominate everything for years. And they are after the chosen one because they know that if they kill you first, I will die too and everything will be theirs. You are the only one who can stop their plans."
At that moment, I felt dizzy and the vision of a girl running through a deserted city with a puppy in her arms took over. It was night and she was gasping for air in her desperate run. She was being chased by a huge and menacing shadow that was getting closer and closer.
"What did you see?" he asked, sitting up with a jolt. He seemed worried and anxious.
"A girl running with a puppy in her arms. Who was she?" I looked at the big guy in confusion. He was so tall that he made me feel fragile. I think he did that to every human being.
"It was you, Diana. You in the past." he explained, sighing. He had a look of pain and guilt.
"Me?" I asked. A mixture of curiosity and dread ran through me.
"I think you saw your first death. The night everything changed."
"She was pregnant," I whispered, shocked, realizing that during the vision I felt a bulge in my stomach and a gentle movement there. "What happened to the baby?"
"Luckily, Aurora survived. I had the chance to meet her in my second life, she was already an old woman. My little wolf. You met her too." He said with a nostalgic smile.
Christophe spoke to me with such affection that it touched me deeply. I couldn't doubt that he was indeed a wolf. And a magnificent white wolf, but there was still much for me to discover about his world.
I watched his wounds carefully, he had ripped a piece of his pants where the dark blood was staining, and noticed that every second the cut closed and regenerated.
He caught my eye, then gently touched the wound and his face contorted in pain.
"I told you I just need to rest a little. But we can't delay. Now that they've found you, they'll soon send more and the only refuge for you is in the pack."
I might protest and insist on continuing my life as before, but the thought of having a horde of invisible wolves attacking the windows to kill me left me terrified. I felt a huge urge to be protected by someone who could face them. Apparently, these monsters would never leave me alone.
"Why did you say that if I die, you die too?"
"The prophecy says, 'They will find each other in all lifetimes for eternity.'" He walked towards me with firm, confident steps. The leg that was bleeding and hurting before now seemed healed and strong. He placed his hand on my chest and I felt its warmth invade my heart. A wave of electricity ran through my body, making me shiver and tremble. "If one heart stops, so does the other. Just as we died together in the beginning, we will die together forever."
"It sounds so romantic in books, but now it's scary."
"Don't be afraid, Diana. After my first mistake, I never let him hurt you again, it won't be in this life that I will." He hugged me tightly.
"This all feels like one long nightmare." I snuggled into his arms, his warmth comforting me. But I couldn't stop shaking, the wounds on my knees were burning and bleeding. And the image of the supermarket cashier, who had been attacked by the trackers, being taken away by the ambulance was still fresh in my mind. I knew this was not a fantasy. It was our reality.
"Come with me and you will be safe. I promise your life will be a dream." Christophe cupped my face in his hands and stared at me intensely. His blue eyes shone with a mixture of love and desire, mesmerizing me. I felt a wave of heat rise through my body and an irresistible urge to comply with his request.
I guess I didn't have much choice...
