I followed my father to the kitchen, where I was greeted by a wonderful smell of melted cheese and tomato sauce.
"You're going to love it," my mother announced, her eyes sparkling when she saw me. I rolled my eyes, unmotivated, because I knew she was going to invent some food full of ground beef or with some sauce from the meat itself so that I would have to eat only rice.
She put on her oven mitts and opened the oven door, from which a puff of hot smoke emerged. Mom carefully took the dish and placed it on the marble countertop.
"Christophe convinced me to make something meatless for you. He found a recipe online that looked delicious and I decided to try it."
I looked curiously at the dish and saw a succulent eggplant lasagna, with layers of pasta, cheese, and vegetables. My eyes shifted to the tall boy who was wearing a white apron over his clothes. He smiled sheepishly at the compliment.
I struggled not to show my satisfaction with what had just happened there, as it was the first time anyone had been able to change my mother's mind. But I couldn't help but smile, as I saw the sparkle in the boy's eyes as he looked at me.
"Oh! I also made a delicious salad, full of things the boy saw on the internet. Because salad is vegan! Did you know?" She asked me and I couldn't help but give her a look that said that was pretty obvious. "I didn't even know they had that on YouTube, I thought it was just music. I didn't even open that app."
"Of course, you only use your phone to yell at me on WhatsApp." I complained and my mother pointed the wooden spoon at me threateningly.
"You should have taught me, if it weren't for the big guy over there, I'd still be making things you don't eat."
"Mom, I gave you an Alexa for Christmas and you didn't even want to learn how to turn it on." I reminded her, laughing. I had bought an Echo Pop for my mother so she could listen to music, ask for information, shop, and have fun. But she was afraid to touch it and break everything.
"Oh! He turned on this radio for me!" She pointed to the Echo Pop on the counter. "He talks to me!"
My mother seemed very happy with her discoveries, that kind of excitement I had not seen in her before and it made me happy.
I turned my eyes to Christophe who was also amused by Dona Regina's words.
He gestured for me to follow him down the hall and I agreed, while my mother entertained herself with my father's compliments. I walked down the hall and reached my old room, Christophe followed me and closed the door behind him.
"Thank you," I said, meeting his eyes. "I've never seen her so happy."
"It was difficult to learn how to use that device, but after we figured it out I also had fun asking him a lot of things," he said with an amused smile.
I laughed at the way he spoke and remembered myself when I bought an Alexa for myself. I had also had a lot of fun when I bought an Alexa for myself. I loved asking her to play my favorite songs, tell jokes, give me information, and even talk to me.
"You think I don't like this new version of my Luna, but I fall in love with you every lifetime, Diana," he declared, completely changing the subject. He untied the apron strings and threw it on the floor. "It's inevitable, just look into your eyes once and I'm gone."
"How do you know what I'm thinking?" I asked and he smiled. I knew I hadn't said any of this to my father. I had only thought it, silently.
"It's a consequence of our bond," he revealed. "Just as you understand me when I speak in my wolf form, I pick up on your thoughts."
"Are you invading my mind?" I brought my hands to my head, trying to push him away, and he laughed.
"No, it's not quite like that," Christophe settled back on the bed. "I only feel some of your emotions and ideas when I touch something of yours or yourself."
"How strange," I laughed at that explanation, but it was a laugh of frustration, because I wished I had someone who could read minds around. "And that only happens to me?"
"Yes."
I approached him and intertwined my fingers with his. He stared at me wide-eyed, surprised by my boldness. I guess he didn't expect me to take any initiative or break the distance between us. I felt his heart beat faster and smiled confidently. I leaned in slightly to say.
"What am I thinking now?"
He tried to meet my gaze, but there was a confusion in his mind that was reflected in his eyes. They seemed lost, unsure, hesitant.
"I don't think it's working." He muttered, with a tone of frustration. I raised an eyebrow and he tried again. "Maybe my desire to kiss you is interfering with our connection."
He confessed, bringing his face closer to mine. I couldn't resist and let out a laugh, letting go of his hand. Christophe grimaced as his thoughts tormented him and soon realized. He ran a hand through his hair, nervous.
"Wait a minute," he said, an expression of surprise on his face as he jumped up. "You were the one who thought that! You're right! You asked me a bunch of questions and I didn't even kiss you!"
He exclaimed, realizing my trap. He had finally understood my teasing and it made me laugh even more. I shook my head, amused.
"It was just a test." I said, winking at him. I ran out of the room before he could use his agility and heard my mother calling from the kitchen for dinner.
So it was real, he could know what I wanted just by touching me, that explained a few things. I felt strange, but at the same time fascinated.
