Christophe's hands lifted me by the hips and I wrapped my legs around his waist, feeling him press me against the column of the house where he kissed me with fervor. His lips were sweet and fiery, with a taste of vodka and some fruit that I didn't recognize, but that left me addicted.
"Wait," I murmured, trying to interrupt the kiss, but he slid his lips down my neck, eliciting a moan from me. "Chris..."
I couldn't finish his name, as I felt his teeth sink into my skin, with less force than when he marked me on the wrist, but with a sensation so delightful that it almost made me lose my mind.
"No! Stop!"
I pushed his arms away and moved his lips from me. I looked into his eyes, which were completely dilated, like those of a wild wolf.
"What is this?" I asked, frightened.
Christophe let me down and let me walk around the apartment, trying to calm the fire in my body. He had a silly smile on his lips and a look of satisfaction in his eyes.
"We are born with a mark for someone. With humans, it's different, but with the chosen one it's like wolves."
"Mark... You mean this happened because you bit me?"
"No. I marked you so that everyone knows I found you, but the chosen one is marked by the soul," he explained. He furrowed his brow, seeing that I didn't understand anything. Christophe threw himself on the couch with impressive agility, while I remained motionless. "The first human Luna was responsible for all this. A long time ago, one of us fell in love with a human and triggered a war. The problem was that his mate was not born as she should have been. She came as a human, but had the instinct of a wolf and that was the first time that happened."
"I need coffee," I said, knowing that this story would be long. Christophe cringed at the word. "Dogs don't like coffee, do they?"
He growled. Low enough to make me shiver and I swallowed hard.
"We don't. But let's continue... the human was engaged to a king of the time. It would have been one of the most important weddings in history if she hadn't fallen in love with the Alpha and run away with him. humans accused the wolves of ruining a historic marriage, wolves accused humans of destroying their Alpha's mind, and everything turned into chaos. When they finally found the couple and couldn't separate them with advice and nasty words, wolves and humans killed them mercilessly."
"Why does this story sound a lot like Romeo and Juliet's?"
"Many stories were born from there," he said, sitting on the couch to watch me prepare the coffee. "Love stories, adventures, wars. But that's the truth. What they never tell is that there was a child in the midst of that chaos and that's why the agreement was born."
"What does this agreement say exactly?" I asked, curious.
"To make amends for the mistake with that child, our ancestors decided that every five hundred years, a human would be chosen to be the mate of the Alpha of the most powerful pack. This human must be the reincarnation of the first Luna and have the power to unite the two species. She is the only one capable of impregnating the Alpha and producing a hybrid heir as before."
"And you're telling me that I'm that human?" I widened my eyes, incredulous.
"Yes. You are the chosen one. My chosen one," he stood up from the couch and walked towards me, with an intense look. "You have the mark of the soul, here."
He touched my wrist, where he had bitten me, then took off his shirt, showing his chest, where there was a deep scar, as if something sharp had pierced his flesh.
"And I have yours, here. We are destined for each other, since the beginning of time."
My eyes were fixed on his mark, which seemed to pulsate with its own light. It was as if I could feel his heart beating in the same rhythm as mine. I didn't know how to explain, but there was something familiar about that scar, as if I had seen it before, in another life. I caressed his skin with care and felt him shiver at that simple touch.
"It was the night they killed us" he revealed, anticipating my question. "We were running away. You were pregnant and needed to rest, so I found a place for us to spend the night, but it was a trap. When I tried to lead the humans away, they captured me while my brothers went after you."
"Why don't I know any of this?" I looked deeply into his clear eyes.
"Because you don't remember your past lives and this particular one happened a long time ago."
"But you remember" I stated, seeing the certainty in his eyes as he told that story.
"For me, it's different. No matter how many new lives I have, I always remember all the ones I've lived. And I know that you ask so many questions because you still don't believe in anything. You're always stubborn."
I sighed deeply and moved away from him, but Christophe grabbed my injured wrist, removed the bandage I had put on, and licked the wounded area. I felt ticklish and let out a laugh.
"Stop, it's never going to heal like this." I pulled my hand away and he made a face. "And yes, it's hard to believe. Especially for someone who reads so many romance books of this genre."
I pointed to the huge bookshelf in my living room, filled with books that I loved to read.
He followed my gaze and smiled, showing his sharp canines.
"So you really like those books?" he asked, curious.
"Yes, I love them. And this kind of romance you're talking about is my favorite." I confessed, unashamed. "I think every reader dreams of living a romance like these, with a handsome, strong, and mysterious man."
"And now that you've found one, you don't want it?"
"You're quite conceited, huh?" I asked, and Christophe turned his gaze to me in such a sensual way that my whole body shivered. I coughed. "Well, I was expecting an Edward Cullen or even a Jacob Black, but I wasn't expecting a werewolf version of The Rock."
He measured our difference noticing how overly large he was and that made him laugh.
"And how can I convince you of what I am?" He raised his eyebrows. I thought it was obvious that he just needed to transform into a huge wolf, but he seemed not to understand. I hoped he would catch my idea, but he shook his head. "No way. It's too dangerous."
"Then how do you expect me to believe you?" I asked, frustrated. "You tell me a crazy story, bite me, and growl around my house. And you expect me to accept all of this without any proof? You might as well have something that makes that noise growl in your pocket."
He pushed me against the kitchen counter, lifting me from the floor by the waist and sitting me there. Then he lowered his pants, becoming completely naked, and I let out a scream covering my eyes. I felt his breath on my ear and he growled at me again.
"And now? Do you still think I have something hidden?"
I shook my head as my whole body trembled like a leaf.
