I grabbed the essentials: a backpack with some clothes, a first-aid kit, and a flashlight, as Christophe told me I wouldn't need anything else. That only reinforced my suspicion that we were going into the woods, far from civilization and the dangers that surrounded us. I didn't know what to expect from that place, or what he was capable of, but if it meant keeping my body intact, I wouldn't complain.
"I need to let Mr. Silva know that I'm not feeling well and I can't work. I don't want to disappoint him," I said weakly, knowing that the next day I would be escaping into the woods to save myself. I was afraid of what might happen if the scavengers found us. But before I could reach my cell phone, which was on the desk, Christophe grabbed it with a quick gesture and looked at me with angry eyes, making a funny grunt like a bored dog.
"What's wrong with you?" I questioned, seeing the irritation on his face. But he just shut up, letting out another low, threatening growl. "Why are you imitating my mother's dog that gets jealous of puppies?"
I joked, trying to lighten the mood. He didn't think it was funny. He looked at me with a serious and possessive expression, as if I were his property.
Christophe growled again and held the phone tightly, preventing me from taking it.
"Hey! Christophe!" He held the device above my head, making me jump to try to grab it. "Give it back to me."
He growled again, softly, as if he was enjoying my frustration. Christophe wrapped his other arm around my waist and faced me. His eyes sparkled with a mixture of amusement and anger. I felt the heat of his body against mine and the scent of his perfume. He was so close that I could see his long eyelashes and the freckles on his nose.
"Why warn that man if you're not going to work there anymore, Di?" He uttered the nickname with contempt, and I caught his intention. He didn't like my former boss treating me with such familiarity.
"Are you jealous of Mr. Silva?" I laughed out loud, incredulous. He couldn't be serious. "Spare me, he's old enough to be my father. He has too much gray hair and wrinkles on his face. It's about time he hung up his boots."
Christophe lifted me into his arms, with a strength that surprised me, and threw the cell phone on the desk, not caring if it broke or not. He leaned me against the wall, trapping me there, and looked at me with an intensity that made me tremble. I felt his warm breath on my neck and his heart beating fast against his chest. He held my chin with one hand and brought his lips close to mine.
"You are mine," he whispered. "Will you let me touch you?"
He asked, but I was already so mesmerized by his eyes that I couldn't refuse. They had a supernatural glow that fascinated me. I felt like they were giving me orders that my body followed without hesitation, as if I were a puppet in his hands. When I tried to run for my life before, I had just gotten lost in his eyes and forgotten everything around me. Even though I wanted to go back and see if the white wolf was okay, my body made me run and hide in the crowd. One look into his deep blues and I felt compelled to do whatever he wanted, even if it was against my will.
"How do you do that?" I asked, and he smiled mischievously.
"You are my other half, don't forget that." He brushed his lips against mine. "Kiss me, come on."
I felt my heart skip a beat. I looked into his eyes and saw a glint of expectation. He leaned closer and I closed mine, feeling his kiss, soft but passionate, and I surrendered to it, letting a wave of emotion wash over me. He held me tight against his body, making every ounce of sanity in me drain away.
"I..." I held back, not wanting to expose myself so much. "I have a question."
Christophe growled at me again like that impatient dog and stared at me. When I opened my eyes, I saw that his were still full of intensity, and that made me close my eyelids so I wouldn't be influenced by anything.
"You have so many..." he grumbled.
"At the station you told me you understood why they chose me, since I was clumsy. But if we are soulmates, how did anyone choose me if I was born this way?"
"You know, there's a way you can know all this without having to ask all the time."
"There is? How?" I perked up at this information, but my smile faded when he analyzed every part of my body, and then his eyes went straight to my bed, which made my eyes widen and I tried to pull away from him. "I prefer to ask."
Christophe laughed at my panic, showing his white teeth. He pulled me close, making me feel his warm body. This time I couldn't look away from his gaze, nor could I breathe properly anymore. He leaned into me and whispered in my ear, "You can't run from me forever, Di." His mouth kissed my neck and I moaned softly, unable to control it. "If we don't determine where you're going to be born, it can be tricky to find you. So we do a ritual every time your soul is ready to return and we choose one of the families of the ancients. There's always someone who can see the future of the babies that are going to be born, and the ones who are most sensitive are chosen to receive the Luna's soul."
"That sounds complicated," I breathed, as he teased my skin with his lips.
"It is," he continued. "Since you don't want to surrender to me, I'm going to play a game with you."
"Game?" I asked. My voice came out so hoarse that only he could understand me. He pulled away slightly to face me.
"Yes. One kiss, for every question you have, until you can't resist anymore."
Christophe let go of me, and I felt as if a piece of my body had stayed with him. For a moment, I didn't pull him back. He pointed to the backpack, and that brought me back to reality. We needed to go.
