"Why?" He asked, curious.
"Jesus!" I screamed as I closed the refrigerator and found him standing right behind it. I almost dropped the water jug on the floor, but it still made a puddle with what spilled. "Will you stop doing that?"
I scolded him and put the jug on the counter to get the cloth and wipe up the mess. Christophe stood still with his arms crossed beside the fridge as if waiting for my answer to a question I didn't quite know. At least he was dressed this time. Even if his polo shirt was squeezing his arms and his pants were a strange shape.
"Know what?" I asked and he sighed.
"Why did you save yourself?" he asked me.
"I didn’t save myself. I just met a bunch of idiots who didn’t convince me to give it to them."
"Understandable." he said, but it seemed my answer had not satisfied him.
"Did you think I was waiting for my prince charming?" I questioned him. "And that I was going to fall head over heels for you after knowing the crazy legends that surround me?"
"Why in all your life do you have to be like this when I meet you again?" he countered.
"What do you mean?"
"You are always so suspicious and stubborn. No matter how many times I try to explain it to you, you never believe me. Something bad always has to happen for you to come to your senses" he said, frustrated.
"Would you believe it?" my question made him shut up.
Christophe thought about it and probably tried to put himself in my shoes.
"I don't think so." he admitted honestly. "I know it's hard to believe everything I've told you. I know it sounds crazy, but I swear it's the truth."
I sighed, observing his youthful face, and noticed that he had a gentler expression. He seemed sincere, but also desperate, and I didn't know what to think. Something in me wanted to believe him, but I was also afraid.
"I think I'll buy some lettuce, do you eat salad?" I asked, trying to break the ice, but soon realized what I was doing. "I can't believe I'm feeding the dog. It's going to be hard to leave you on the road later."
I turned to grab my wallet and Christophe touched my waist. His hands pressed my body tightly against his, making me moan.
"I warned you not to call me that." He kissed my neck, taking my breath away, and before he bit me I protested.
"Sorry, sorry. I won't do it again." I said, letting go. My heart started to pound as desperately as a helpless animal.
"Good; and no, I don't eat grass." he said, irritated.
"And I don't eat red meat, we're soul mates indeed." The irony was evident in my speech and it made him growl at me. But before he could come closer I grabbed the door and opened it, quickly leaving the apartment.
I got some greens and vegetables at the market's fruit and vegetable section. I walked down the frozen food aisle and saw some meat laid out there. I hadn't eaten that in years, not since I moved to Sao Paulo. I never liked to eat red meat and living alone, I wasn't obliged to have it at home, but my visitor ate, so I needed to take something for him.
I don't know why I was thinking about him.
As I was beating myself up about the situation, I heard a loud bang and the market's glass window overlooking the building's garden shattered into a thousand pieces as if something had been thrown against it.
A loud growl made me put my hand over my ears and shrink my body. Still, it was possible to hear the cashier boy cursing and when I looked in his direction an invisible force threw him away making me scream.
Paws beat in my direction so fast I could barely think. There was something there that was ready to attack me, but my eyes couldn't find anything.
However, the thing didn't hit me, because the huge white wolf slammed its body against the invisible creature that threw a shelf of food to the floor.
The white creature's blue eyes locked on mine for an instant and a desire to run from there made me obey my body. Not knowing where to go, I just let my legs guide me away from that confrontation.
I ran without looking back, hoping the white wolf would protect me from the invisible enemy's attack. I heard more growls, grunts and the crackle of broken glass. I felt the cold wind hit my face and the smell of blood in the air. I didn't know what was going on, but I knew I was in danger.
I got to the market exit and looked for the stairs that led to the apartments. I wouldn't be foolish enough to go up the elevator and end up trapped in a box with a faceless animal. I managed to climb five steps, but I was surprised by a force that pushed me sideways.
I fell to the ground, hurting my knee and elbow. I lifted my head and found nothing, just emptiness in the hallway and the sound of growling. It was the invisible enemy, who had followed me here.
I tried to get up, but he was faster, his paw was on my chest, tilting me so that my body lay down and drool fell on my face. Luckily the white wolf appeared and pulled him off of me, once again his eyes met mine making electricity run through my entire body.
"Christophe" I whispered and felt the urge to run away grow again in my body.
The white wolf ran towards something that was beating its paws for us as I walked out of there. I could still hear one of the creatures moaning and the urge to know if it was the white wolf made me stop in the middle of the corridor, but if it was the invisible creature, he would catch me and that motivated me to leave them fighting for whatever it was.
When I got to the building's entrance hall, there was a crowd of people and a lot of chatter saying that a group of vandals was destroying the place. I looked for Christophe in the crowd, but couldn't find him. That made me look back at the entrance and come to the conclusion that he really must have been that white wolf.
Seu Pedro was trying to calm the crowd, but all I could do was stare at the lobby entrance and not understand a word he was saying.
I sneaked through the people, seeking a hiding place without taking my eyes off my goal, and then he appeared. He came out the front doors, limping with a leg soaked in blood. His body was covered in a towel he must have picked up in the market's bed, table and bath section, as it still had the store's price tag and magnet on it.
"Now do you believe me?" he said and his body fell on top of mine.
