"I want to know if your proposal still stands."
Ravier found Gael's attitude captivating; however, his presence there only proved that pride doesn't fill an empty stomach.
Casually, he picked up the contract the lawyer had prepared and placed it in front of Gael.
"This is the contract; if you want some time to read it..."
He didn't get to finish the sentence before Gael grabbed the pen and quickly signed it. Smiling, Ravier looked deeply at Gael and said,
"Very well, but as your boss, if you sign anything else here in my company without reading it, there will be serious consequences for you."
Gael felt a shiver run down his spine, but it wasn't fear. He could guarantee it was more of a promise than a threat. Of course, if it wasn't for the fact that he was the straightest man standing there in front of him.
His voice came out a little shaky, and he stammered as he asked,
"Well... a-and... what position will I be filling?"
Without hesitation and quite seriously, Ravier said,
"You will be my personal assistant, and read the contract because I won't be explaining what you have to do. If you have any questions, ask Dayse at the reception desk; she'll be able to answer them. And bring me a coffee."
After that, Ravier turned to his computer screen and focused on his work, completely ignoring Gael.
Gael swallowed his pride; he didn't need his dignity, he needed his mother well and healthy.
When he left Ravier's office, he released the breath he hadn't realized he'd been holding. The worst part of it all was that he had no idea where to get a cup of coffee.
He whispered,
"Dayse..."
He then walked to the reception desk on that floor, where the woman was typing frantically.
"Excuse me, are you Dayse?"
"Yes, how can I help you?"
"Well, I'm Mr. Valente's new assistant; he told me you would guide me on whatever I needed. He wants a coffee, and I have no idea where to get one."
After looking Gael up and down, Dayse blurted out,
"You're gay."
It wasn't a question, but a statement. However, Gael was not offended, as she didn't say it in a derogatory way, and after all, he didn't hide his sexuality from anyone. Still, he had to ask.
"How do you know?"
"I have a nose for it, dear. The coffee machine is next door on the left."
After winking at Gael, the woman went back to typing, and he didn't want to take too long to deliver the coffee to Ravier; he couldn't fail on his first task.
He went to the place Dayse had indicated. The problem? He had seen a capsule coffee machine before, but he had never used one.
"Damn it..."
Gael took his cell phone out of his pocket and researched how to make coffee in that machine, and he breathed a sigh of relief when he saw the black liquid pouring into the cup.
He took the coffee to Ravier, who didn't even bother to look away from the computer screen.
As soon as he sat down at the desk that belonged to Ravier's assistant, right at his office door, Gael didn't even have time to breathe before Dayse arrived and placed a tablet and a cell phone in front of him.
"Here is Mr. Valente's entire schedule and all his contacts. If you need anything, you know where to find me."
Gael took the two devices and started to fiddle with them. Thankfully, the afternoon was very quiet; Ravier only asked for one more cup of coffee, which made Gael think that maybe he wouldn't sleep at night, or maybe he never slept at all.
Of course, it was time to go home, but he didn't move to leave, let alone ask Ravier, and when he thought about asking Dayse, she had already left.
Gael just continued to do his job, which at that moment consisted of sorting through Ravier's emails, which were numerous and had piled up over several days. He ended up getting lost and focused on his work as well, only realizing how late it was when Ravier left the office and was surprised to see him still there.
However, the man said nothing about passing by him; he just left.
Gael went home discouraged; his first day at work had not been good, but the moment he walked through the door of his house, he wore a huge smile on his face. His mother didn't need to know what he was going to face; he just had to make sure she was okay.
Dona Iris was sitting in front of the TV, as she always was at this time, watching her favorite soap opera.
"Where were you, Gael? I was worried when I woke up and you weren't here."
"I was at work, Mom."
"Work? What do you mean, work?"
"I decided to accept Ravier Valente's offer."
"I don't believe it. If you're doing this for me, Gael, quit tomorrow."
He sat down next to her, hugged her, and kissed the top of her head.
"Hey, calm down, Mom, it's a great place to work, okay? See, I got home safe and sound."
"Are you sure, son?"
Dona Iris had always been very protective of her son; she wanted to keep him in a box, away from all the evils and sorrows of this world, but gone were the days when she could put him under her skirt.
"I told you not to worry, Mom."
After calming his mother down, Gael took a shower, ate something, and went straight to bed. He knew he would need all his energy; he had looked at Ravier's schedule and knew it wasn't going to be as calm as today.
As soon as he laid his head on the pillow, the image of Ravier, seated, imposing, arrogant, and masculine, at his desk, invaded his mind. The memory was so strong that it caused a reaction in him. He pushed it all to the back of his mind; it was wrong to go down that path with his boss.
