When Gael parked the car in the same spot he had left earlier, he felt his muscles relax.
"Are you really giving me this car?"
"I won't repeat myself, Gael, enjoy it."
Saying that, he left Gael in the car and walked away. As soon as he stepped out, Felicite threw herself at him.
"Darling, where were you?"
Ravier removed her arms from around him and said irritably:
"What do you want, Felicite? Why are you here?"
"Oh, Ravi, I just miss you."
"You saw me this morning."
She pouted and said in a syrupy voice:
"Yes, but we fought, and I can't bear to know that you're angry with me."
"I'm not angry. Now you can go."
"Why are you treating me like this? Can't you be affectionate just once?"
"I have other things to do, Felicite. The world doesn't revolve around you."
Gael stayed inside the car. He didn't want to interfere in Ravier's life. From inside the car, he couldn't hear much, mainly because the engine was still running and the windows were closed, but the engaged couple seemed to be arguing.
In a desperate attempt to get Ravier's attention, Felicite said:
"Ravier, if you leave me here, consider our engagement broken."
Ravier didn't even look back. He was fed up with Felicite's tantrums and neediness. If she wanted to end it, all the better.
After Ravier left his fiancee in the parking lot, Gael got out of the car. He knew all too well what it was like to be the target of the boss's rudeness, so he thought about comforting Felicite, who was sobbing convulsively while her fiance, or rather, ex-fiance, entered the elevator with an impassive expression, as if nothing had happened.
Gael wondered how hard this man's heart could be. Ravier walked out of there very relieved; it was the best thing that had happened to him in a long time.
The secretary took a handkerchief from his suit pocket and held it out to Felicite.
"Here, Miss."
Her face still wet with tears, she looked up at him and said:
"Who do you think you are to comfort me? Mind your own business, you pauper."
At that moment, her expression was so cold and disdainful that Gael wondered if she had been crying for real at any point.
Felicite slapped Gael's hand, which was still holding the handkerchief. The force she used was enough to scratch the back of his hand.
Seeing that she had caused him some injury, Felicite wiped away her fake tears and walked away as if nothing had happened.
She didn't need to cry now, only when she was with Marjorie. She certainly wouldn't let Ravier break off this engagement.
When he reached the executive floor, Gael went straight to the bathroom. Behind a first aid kit, Felicite's nails looked like cat claws because as soon as she scratched him, the area around the wound started to swell.
Upon returning to his desk, the phone rang. It was Ravier; he wanted him to bring some documents.
Gael went to the file room, looked for the documents Ravier had requested, and took them to him.
As always, Ravier was deeply focused on the screen in front of him. Only when Gael placed the documents on the table did he notice the bandage on his hand, and he stopped working.
He was very curious to know what had happened because less than an hour ago, he had left Gael in the parking lot, and he was perfectly fine.
Ravier couldn't help himself, he grabbed Gael's hand and asked:
"What happened?"
Gael was surprised by Ravier's touch and tried to pull his hand away, but the boss didn't let go.
"It's nothing."
Gael's humble attitude greatly irritated Ravier. Was he an idiot? He was certain that Gael wouldn't say anything, so he let go of his hand and said:
"I have my ways of finding out."
"Do you need anything else, Mr. Valente?"
With a closed expression and focused on his work again, Ravier didn't answer, and Gael knew it was his cue to leave.
After Gael left, Ravier accessed the parking garage's security system. He watched the recordings and saw exactly what had happened. It didn't surprise him in the least; Felicite was a psychopath. Only her parents didn't see it because they were desperate to see him married.
As was her custom, Felicite immediately went to cry on Marjorie's shoulder.
"I wanted you so much as a mother, but Ravier is determined to prevent this in every way."
"Calm down, dear. My husband and I will take care of this."
"When I said I broke off our engagement, it was only because Ravier was completely ignoring me. I feel like I give my all to this relationship, while he just wants to push me further and further away."
After every sentence she rehearsed on the way there, Felicite burst into desperate sobs.
Marjorie was deeply moved by her suffering, and at that moment, she was already thinking that she and her husband would have to have a serious talk with Ravier. He couldn't do this to such a good girl.
Felicite was bursting with inner joy. She knew that after this manipulation, Ravier's parents would certainly pressure him to get married as soon as possible.
Felicite's family was on the verge of bankruptcy, and she had to make this marriage work before it was too late.
As soon as Felicite left, Marjorie went to her husband's company, and they both decided that they would have to have a serious conversation with Ravier and pressure him to marry Felicite as soon as possible. They had given their word to her father; he couldn't make them go through this shame now.
When Ravier arrived at the parking lot to go home, he noticed his parents' car. All the employees had already left, and with the empty parking lot, it was easy to identify them. He approached the rear window, the glass lowered, and his father said:
"Get in the car, now."
