Ravier couldn't be more bored, he already knew all of his parents' tricks and simply, at almost thirty years old, he couldn't stand all the stalling any longer.
So, as soon as he realized they were only going to the family's country house, he felt himself relax.
His father still had a closed-off expression, as if he could lash out at any moment, and his mother looked like she was about to faint. Why did his family have to be so dramatic?
Surely, the lack of real problems made them this way. It made him think about Gael. Yes, his secretary did have real problems. His mother was going through a difficult health treatment, and he seemed happier than Ravier. If he gathered half a dozen more employees, he was sure he would find many problems more important than the fact that his son didn't want to marry someone as clueless as Felicite. His parents should be thanking him.
Maybe it's true what they say, that money doesn't buy happiness, but who cares? He loves power and won't give it up. He knows exactly what to do to get his parents off his back about it.
When they arrived at the house, Ravier was the first one to get out. He went straight to his room there; he needed at least a shower to wash away the day's exhaustion and endure the drama to come.
Alberto couldn't keep quiet in the face of his son's dismissive attitude.
"Why is he acting like this? Is he on drugs?"
"Don't say such things, Alberto. Of course our son wouldn't do that."
"I don't know anymore, I don't even recognize him."
"Have you ever stopped to think that maybe we're pressuring him too much?"
"Don't be silly, Marjorie, it's not the time to go easy on him. Ravier is a man, not a boy."
"Yes, he is a man, we should trust him to make his own decisions."
"You know why I can't trust him."
"That's in the past, Alberto. He's had experiences and enough time to prove that it was all just a misunderstanding."
When Ravier came down, his parents were already at the table for dinner.
"Sit by my side, dear."
He went to his mother's side, even though he knew she was just trying to protect him somehow. Which he didn't need, because he hadn't been afraid of his father for a long time.
After dinner, he assumed it would be time to talk, so they sat in the huge living room.
"So, son, are you going to insist on not marrying Felicite?"
"She was the one who broke off the engagement, I didn't do anything to make her ask for it."
"You disappeared."
"So, does my mother know where you are twenty-four hours a day?"
Ravier had bought photos of his father with his new secretary just a few months ago. He just wanted to spare his mother the shame, so he bought them before the magazine published them. Even though his mother has already done the same with Alberto.
He faced his father. Alberto knew exactly what Ravier was talking about. He cleared his throat and said,
"That's not what matters here."
"So what does matter?"
"Are you going to marry Felicite or not?"
"You already know my answer."
If Alberto wanted to play hardball, he had met his match. While Alberto was about to have a heart attack, Ravier was simply as calm as he could be.
"Very well, then I must say that you must find another bride as soon as possible and marry her immediately."
"Neither one nor the other, I'm not interested in anyone."
"You're almost thirty, at your age I was already married to your mother."
"I don't have a script for my life. Actually, I do, but I write the script of my own life."
"I'm going to have to be tougher on you."
"Don't worry about it..."
Ravier placed his drink on the coffee table and said:
"I quit."
His parents were so surprised they had no reaction as he walked out the door. Only after some time did Alberto ask his wife,
"Did he really say that?"
"Yes, he did."
Letting go of her husband's arm, Marjorie said,
"I told you not to pressure him like that."
As the two began to argue, Ravier simply took one of the cars from the garage and even though he was tired, he drove to a nearby hotel. It wasn't the kind of place he usually stayed at, but it would do for tonight.
Morning came too quickly, and Ravier just emailed Gael to reschedule his professional appointments and tried to relax.
He went to his own country house. After all, it wasn't that far from his family's country house, although they didn't know he owned the property. He couldn't lower his standards, and that was the best area in the countryside.
Ravier wasn't worried about being a part of his parents' company or not. With this latest venture, he was sure he could maintain his lifestyle comfortably.
Although lately, he had realized that having too much money and power may not be beneficial, just look at his parents.
Speaking of his venture, as always, he would watch the inauguration of his lounge from afar, as he still didn't want anyone to know about his success.
He remembered Gael and gave him a call, however, Gael didn't answer. He didn't even know what he was going to say, so he gave up.
Gael saw Ravier's call but decided not to answer. He had already spent the whole day rescheduling his appointments, and he was no longer on work hours.
He needed to, for real, find a very handsome and nice man to pick up tonight.
