Gael was still cursing Ravier when he felt a hand on his back. After everything he'd been through that day, he turned around startled to see who it was.
He put his hand over his heart and said,
"For God's sake Ananda, are you trying to give me a heart attack?"
His cousin started to laugh and said,
"Who were you calling all those names?"
Still catching his breath from the scare, Gael replied,
"That troglodyte of a boss of mine."
Giving him a suspicious smile, Ananda asked,
"And what did he do to you?"
"Nothing much, just the usual boss stuff, making my life a living hell."
Only when Gael turned around could Ananda see his black eye.
"My God, cousin, what happened to you?"
"It's nothing."
Ananda touched the purple bruise and he almost jumped.
"Please Ananda, be more gentle."
"I'm sorry, but this looks really bad."
Gael thought: How could Ravier have caressed his face when it looked so horrible?
They went into the house, and his mother was also shocked by the state of his eye. He explained to both of them what had happened.
"I don't think you should go back there, son."
"What do you mean, Mom? It's my job."
"But that man could come back, try to get revenge on you."
"I think he's already learned his lesson, Mom."
"But be careful, cousin."
"You too, Ananda."
"I will, that place you work at seems to have a very toxic environment. Especially your boss."
Gael pressed his lips together and rolled his eyes. Ananda was already talking too much, as always.
"What are you talking about, dear?"
"Me? No, nothing, Auntie, I'm just saying this because he attacked Gael, for starters."
"Oh yes! I don't like him one bit either. Please, son, don't expose yourself too much to that man, he doesn't seem like a good person to me."
"Forget about it, Mom. Even though this happened, I'm happy at my job. I'm sure Mr. Valente has nothing to complain about."
Gael wanted to avoid the subject, mainly because he wanted to forget the kiss, the caresses, and especially the rudeness.
He changed the subject and he and Ananda gossiped all night.
Early in the morning, his cousin went on her way, and he went to work.
As soon as he left Gael's house, Ravier became pensive. The neighborhood where Gael lived wasn't the most dangerous, but it was very far from the company. Something crossed his mind. Gael was going to get a big surprise tomorrow.
He was so distracted in his thoughts that he didn't even notice anyone approaching, only feeling a hand snake around his neck. He immediately immobilized the person against his car, sighing in relief when he saw it was Felicit.
"Oh honey, the more you do that, the more I fall for you."
"What do you want, Felicit?"
She ran her hand over Ravier's abdomen, even over his clothes, she knew there were abs there. She looked at him seductively and said,
"The same thing as always, my dear, you."
Pouting and whining a little, she continued,
"Why does it seem like I can never get here?"
She pointed to his heart. The scratching of her nails against the fabric of his suit made a noise, but she didn't care.
"Because there's nothing there, Felicit. I don't have a heart."
"I'm willing to live in emptiness, as long as I can be with you, Ravi."
Ravier felt a pang of guilt. Felicit seemed so vulnerable right now that he couldn't bring himself to send her away.
"Alright, let's go home."
Fortunately, Ravier managed to keep Felicit under control, and they just slept during the night. Early in the morning, he went to the gym because he needed to get ready for the day.
Ravier pushed himself to the limit during his workout because, just like every other day, he had woken up with desire raging through him. Unfortunately, it wasn't for the beautiful woman who was lying in bed next to him.
He had reached a point where he was used to dreaming about his secretary at night. It wasn't a novelty for him anymore, and he had already realized that there was no point in fighting it, only accepting it.
He just needed to keep it in the realm of dreams, control what he could, which in this case was reality.
As soon as he walked into his apartment, he noticed something was different. Felicit was sitting sullenly, staring at the door. She was clearly waiting for their next fight.
This was already a routine between them, no matter how hard Ravier tried to avoid it. It remained to be seen what the reason was this time.
"Where were you?"
"You know very well I was at the gym, like I do every morning."
"Which one of your mistresses did you buy a car for?"
"How did you know about that?"
"Does it matter?"
"Oh! No need to tell me."
Ravier quickly figured out who it was. The owner of the dealership was a close friend of Felicit's father, so it was just a matter of putting two and two together.
"Hugo mentioned it to my father, and he immediately called me because, clearly, neither of us would be caught dead in such a cheap car."
"Why do you need to control my life, Felicit? You know, it's exhausting."
"Maybe because I can't trust you, Ravier?"
"All you have are assumptions, I've never cheated on you. Why can't you understand that?"
"Then tell me, who did you buy this car for? Because I just can't believe you're going to drive around in an economy car."
Felicit spat out those last words as if an economy car was an insult. But Ravier had only chosen that car so Gael wouldn't draw unnecessary attention to himself.
He paid him a good salary, but he knew that due to his mother's health, Gael probably wouldn't be able to buy a car right now.
"Fine! I bought this car for my secretary."
"You pay him a salary, why buy him a car?"
