A Fatal Game (2)

Xavier smiled and held Rain's hand. Although she struggled to shake his hand off, he did not let go of her. On the contrary, he tightened his grip, with his fingers crossed with hers. The hotness of his hand ran through her hand. She felt a bit awkward. He had not done anything that crossed the line to her. All the same, he always could find a way to make her uncomfortable.

Xavier dragged her to the front garden. A helicopter was parked in the open space. Xavier walked towards the helicopter and then carried Rain in his arms. He put her into the helicopter, and then stepped into it, with his hand closing the door. He motioned for the pilot sitting in the front to take off, and the pilot nodded, and then the helicopter started to rise from the ground. From the window of the helicopter, all the things on the ground seemed to be gradually diminishing.

Once getting into the helicopter, Xavier closed his eyes. There was a hint of darkness below his eyes. Rain suspected he did not sleep much at night, just like her. She could not understand why he had to do something like that to make both of them suffer from insomnia.

After about ten minutes, the helicopter started to land. Rain stared out the window and narrowed her eyes. There was a maze on the mountain, which was clearly built by humans. Outside the maze, there was a flat area. Several cars and one helicopter parked there.

Xavier got out of the helicopter while carrying Rain in his arms. A man, who was wearing sunglasses, drew near to them, laughing. "Long time no see, Lewis."

"Hope we'll work well, Sam."

Xavier chortled and then put Rain down. He hugged Sam for a second as a greeting. Sam cast a look at Rain, and said, "Lewis, I remember you never have any interest in women."

"I found her by accident. She's my treasure."

Xavier pulled Rain over and ruffled her hair fondly. With his arm around her waist, Xavier asked, "Where is Ronald?"

Sam raised his head and pointed at the entrance of the maze, and said, "He's waiting for you in the center."

Xavier smiled and did not say anything further. A man standing beside him stepped forward and handed him a suitcase with a combination lock. Xavier took hold of the suitcase and strolled towards the maze with Rain hand in hand.

"Stay with me," said Xavier.

He kept smiling as if everything was okay. Rain suddenly got nervous. It struck her that this was something more serious than playing in the maze. Flying through a long-distance and a suitcase with a combination lock? No one would go so far like that as to play a game in the maze.

As she was lost in thought, she had been dragged to the entrance of the maze. Two men, looking like bodyguards, stopped them politely. Xavier patted her backside lightly and said, "Don't worry."

After finishing his speaking, he held his hands up and stepped forward. Two men started to scan him with instruments to make sure he had no weapons with him.

Two men started to check Rain after finishing checking Xavier. When they could be certain both of them had no weapons, they let them go into the maze. Once she entered the maze, she immediately realized that this maze was more spectacular than she expected.

It was different from the maze that was used in the game. It was not open, with the stone ceiling covered all the way, and the stone walls were extremely thick; it was more like a dungeon. What she saw in the helicopter was actually the hedge growing outside. Because it was very far away, it seemed like a maze.

Xavier walked carefreely, and Rain followed him closely. The inside of the maze was like another world. It was very quiet. Except for the sound of breath and steps, she could not hear anything. There were lamps every certain distance along the way, which helped them see the path. The vague light mixed with the shadow of walls, which made the whole place look like a nightmare. Finding the right direction seemed impossible for her.

"From the outside to the center, it takes at least forty minutes," said Xavier, breaking the silence. "The person who built this maze was a rich psycho. He threw all criminals into the maze. If they can find the exit, then he'll let them go. Lots of them were trapped in here until death. That psycho had died a hundred years ago. His grave is in the center of the maze."

Despite the complicated path, Xavier seemed very confident and knew where he should go. He had never hesitated in any fork. They had walked inside the maze for half an hour, and they never met a dead end.

"Are you familiar with here?" Rain looked at Xavier and said.

"I've never been here."

Rain froze at his simple words. She thought he must have been here numerous times which was why he could be so confident. Worried, she asked, "What if...we lost in here?"

Xavier did not answer her question. A ghost of a smile touched his lips as he cast a glance at Rain, which made her feel stressed. Now she suddenly realized that this guy was abnormal in every sense and she could not reason his acts in a normal mindset.

"Wait, maybe he knew he'll die here, so he took me here to keep him company?" she thought to herself.

It suddenly occurred to her that there was a maze built by Minos in the myth. There was only one entrance to that maze, and a monster was waiting for the visitor at the end of the path. As a medical student, she would not be frightened by death. But when Xavier told her that a lot of criminals died here, she felt a bit scared. After all, dying of illness was different from dying of being lost in a maze.

Unknowingly, Rain tightened her grip on his hand. Xavier dropped his head and was going to say something, and then suddenly heard a woman's cry in the distance. This happened out of the blue and certainly frightened Rain. Her heart started to thud fast once she heard that sound. She felt her blood was almost frozen. She hugged Xavier from behind tightly and cast a glance at the darkness in the distance. She was almost scared to death while thinking about what was waiting for them.
