The Mirage in the Mirror (1)

This feeling was like being the prey to a lion. RainMcConnell knew there was a pair of eyes in the dark watching her coldly, but she was somehow still walking into the trap. There was nothing she could do except for waiting for his attack with her heart pounding with fear, and she knew there was no way to get out of this tragedy.

When Rain arrived home, her cousin, Cindy McConnell, talked to the family about what had happened at the bistro. The young girl was in a state of shock, telling the whole thing while sexing the story up.

However, the accident had suddenly happened, and Cindy hadn't seen anything important with Rain in front. In addition to the chaotic scene and the disappearance of Rain, there was nothing special about her story.

As soon as Rain entered the house, the whole family turned to stare at her. Apparently, her face was extremely pale, and it seemed that she was still shocked. After they looked at each other, her father stood up and asked. "My baby girl, tell me what happend?"

"Nothing..."

Rain tried her best to put on a brave face, answering with a calm voice. However, her uncle frowning as he showed his upset in his tone, "How could you leave your cousin alone in this kind of situation? Are you seriously her family?"

Hearing his words, she was stunned for a moment and realized that the whole family was waiting for her answer. She whipped her head to look at her cousin, who also raised her head and stared at her, but there was a shadow of complicated emotions in Cindy'd eyes.

Rain's mother was about to explain for her, but she had already calmed down and opened her mouth with a calm attitude. "A man mistook me as his girlfriend, so he took me into his car. Everything happened in a few seconds, and he let me go after realizing I wasn't the woman he was looking for. When I went back to the bistro, Cindy was no longer there anymore."

Her uncle snorted and didn't say a word. Meanwhile, her parents looked at each other and nodded at her grandfather. "Dad, we just cleaned Rain's bedroom today. It's still early now, so I think it might be a good idea to decorate it with her."

Her grandfather nodded, "Go ahead. It was a rough day for Rain, and she deserves a good rest."

"Thank you, grandpa. Good night guys. I am afraid I will have to go upstairs now."

After saying good night to everyone, Rain turned around and passed the garden to her bedroom. When they reached the corridor in another building, her mother looked behind to make sure no one else could hear their conversation and signed.

"Your uncle has been upset with the whole family for the mansion. After what Cindy told him today, he was pretty annoyed. Don't take it personally."

"I won't, mom."

Rain smiled, but she understood what was going on. The whole family lived together for her grandparents, but they were more than ninety years old, which involved the division of their property.

The joyful and warm atmosphere she had felt when coming back to her hometown was all about her grandparents, but she would never know how the others in the family thought. What was more, she even couldn't understand the resentment in Cindy's eyes earlier.

As she thought about these issues, they reached her bedroom, which was rather simple, with one side of the door, one side of the window, and two walls. The table was next to the window, and opposite the window was the door. Moreoever, a big bookshelf and closet was leaning on the wall.

There were Rain's personal items still in wrapped boxes on the floor. Her mother passed her luggage and signed,  "It will take a few days for you to pack, but there is no need to be in a rush. Now you have moved back home, so there will be plenty of time. Just do as you want."

Rain answered with her absent mind, looking around the suitcases and boxes on the floor. However, a kraft paper-wrapped box placed next to the bed attracted her attention. She had checked everything before moving back home, but this package seemed to be unfamiliar for her.

Rain immediately had a bad feeling. Just when her mom was bending over and ready to unwrap the box for her, she pulled her. "Mom, I haven't eaten anything all day long. I kinda feel hungry now. Can you cook me some pasta, please?"

"When will you grow up, my baby girl?"

Her mother sounded reluctant, but she was already moving to her door. "What about some pesto pasta?"

"Sounds good to me."

Seeing her mother go downstairs, Rain turned around to pick the package up right away, which was surprisingly light. She shook it, and it didn't make a sound. She then decided to unwrap the box with the scissors, but what was inside made her dumbfounded. Within a second, her face was deadly pale as if a thunderstorm hit her.

The box contained the T-shirt and jeans that she had worn the kidnapping day. After following Xavier Lewis to the maze, she had changed into the dress he had prepared for her, so this set of clothes should have been in his house.

She had never expected to see this outfit in this kind of situation again. Along with her clothes, there was a note written in Tugh, "9 p.m. Friday. Vermon Hotel, Room 1218."
