A Fatal Game (1)

She thought it was going to be a sleepless night, but, to her surprise, it was almost noon when she woke up. She turned over on the bed, feebly. She felt her whole body was sore from trudging along the mountain trails for almost half a day, especially her legs, which ached so much that she felt she had lost control of them.

Xavier was not in the room right now. When Rain sat up on the bed, she found that the clothes, which were thrown willy-nilly on the ground by Xavier, had been tidied up. Her well-folded dresses were put on the night table neatly. Rain got out of the bead, changed into prepared clothes, and walked around the room two times. She tried to pull the door, surprisingly finding that it was not locked.

Two maids dressed in white clothes greeted her politely, and said, "Mr. Lewis said you can go anywhere as you like as long as you stay within west wide. The breakfast can be served now. Would you prefer eating it inside your room, or you'd rather go to the dining room?"

"Thank you, I'll go to the dining room."

Rain fidgeted helplessly. As a girl growing up in an average family, she had never been served by maids before, and always did everything by herself. Now, all of a sudden, she arrived in a place where some people would follow her all the time and serve her carefully, which weirded her out. They were even more polite and attentive than waiters in the hotel.

Following two women to the downstairs, she stepped out of the living room to a spacious terrace, where there was a table with breakfast on it, which was covered by a sunshade.

Rain sat down and grabbed a bite in abstraction. She planned to walk around and explore this place, which could help her get familiar with the layout and terrain of this area. Since Xavier had said she could go anywhere, she had no need to worry about anything.

Rain stood up and walked away. This time, those two women in white did not follow her. She let out a breath of relief. It seemed that Xavier's words were for real that she could go anywhere as she pleased. As she walked around, she found there were more people than her expectation. Lots of maids and gardeners trotted across the garden, and all of them would smile politely once they caught sight of her.

Following the gravel path, she strolled to the back of the building and was surprised by what she saw. There was where she had noticed yesterday.

There was a white fence around the cliff as the protection. All the mountain before her eyes was very far away. She felt pleased by this spacious natural scenery. Except for the soft lawn, nothing was planted around here. Rain walked towards two lawn chairs close by and sat on one of them. She narrowed her eyes and looked at the remote sky. She was a prisoner who had no freedom and was overwhelmed with troublesome chores until yesterday. And now, she had become a kept mistress and needed to do nothing apart from pleasing that man.

It was next to impossible to be perfect in life. When she gained something, she had to lose something.

Lying in the sun, she felt so relaxed. She felt she could take it easy and there was no need for her to find a way to escape hurriedly. Right now, she had not understood what Xavier was thinking of. Before she got his number, she should not take any move recklessly. What she should do now was to find a method to stay safe in this dangerous hell-hole, and look for a chance to run away.

All of a sudden, she felt the sunlight was blocked. Opening her eyes, she found Xavier was looking down at her. "Do you like here?" asked Xavier.

Rain remained silent. Xavier sat down beside her and narrowed his eyes to look at the mountain up ahead. "Rainy, do you like hide-and-seek?"

Rain turned to cast a glance at him. Since she was 7, she had never played this kind of game again. But, if Xavier really wanted to play it, she could keep him company. After all, playing up to him was her only job right now.

"I have something to attend to, so I have to leave here for a while. Would you rather stay here or come with me?" asked Xavier, gazing at her.

"I'll go with you," said Rain calmly.

Once Xavier left here, those men may do something to her. With his thought occurring to her, she decided to go with him in a heartbeat. She knew she was safe for the time being as long as she was around Xavier.

At this thought, Rain suddenly was struck dumb. She could not believe she was thinking that his company would mean safe to her. She felt she may have been brainwashed by him.

"All right, then we should go now."
