19.

“Kain, when are we going to get our suits done?” Casper asked, despondent. For the past four days he had been completely downcast. Probably cause Argen is still ignoring him.

“I have a meeting with my liquor supplier later today. I’ll call you.”

Seated in the meeting room of Greane Holdings and buried in heaps of files and documents, Casper, Kain, Dawson and several others reviewed the plans for the Greane fair and the final plans for Millevern’s birthday celebration.

“To think he would suddenly decide to publicly name the two of us as his heirs in such an event... dramatic as always.” Casper muttered to himself, dissatisfied with the implication of Millevern’s wish. “We’re going to be under constant public scrutiny, you know? Everyone would be watching us... how are you not upset?” He questioned, frustrated.

“Hmmm... I am, although, the attention would have been on us sooner or later.” Kain replied, unconcerned, his attention still on the cost plan in hand.

“I know, but... whatever. I’m done with this.” He handed his file over to Dawson. “That’s all, right?” He picked his keys and hurried out the door without waiting for a reply.

Were things going that well between him and Argen? “Here. I’m done too. It’s okay.” He handed his documents over. “I’ll take my leave.”

He looked at his watch as he got into his car. 1:30. Carl and the supplier must have been waiting for a while. It suddenly got really busy since uncle made his spontaneous announcement... I wonder if she’s alright now. He wondered about Raine as she suddenly popped into his mind. She seemed to have beeen in a bad shape at the time. She’ll call when she gets over it, right? He parked his car and walked briskly into the restaurant where the meeting was to take place.

Is it really okay to go so far from the hospital just for lunch? Doubtful as she got down from Sam’s car. “Isn’t this a little too far?”

“It’s fine. The food here is great too.” Sam reassured as he led the way.

Let’s just get this over with. She followed behind without asking anymore questions.

“Miss Simma.” A familiar voice called out to her as Sam led the way to their table. She turned around to see Carl, the manager of Moondrop, smiling warmly at her. He looked behind her to Sam. “I see you are not with Miss Iyeaner is not with you.” He extended his hand to Sam as they exchanged greetings. “If you don’t mind, would you join us for lunch?” Carl had always done everything in his power to be on Argen’s good side, making sure to extend that courtesy to Raine as well, which led to him paying for their things anytime he came across them.

Us? There’s us here? An uncomfortable feeling formed in the pit of her stomach. “I’m sure you must be very busy. Please don’t mind us.”

“I think it’s fine. We’ll join you if you don’t mind our presence.” Sam interjected suddenly as he stepped forward signalling that Carl lead the way.

“Good. Please, follow me.”

Seriously, I have a very bad feeling about this. The unpleasant feeling grew as she lagged behind.

Carl led them to a more secluded and quieter area of the restaurant. At his table were three other people. Her discomfort grew even more as Sam took a seat and brought her face to face with Kain.

I should really have rejected this lunch offer.

As their meeting was nearing its end, Carl noticed as Kain, his long time friend, tapped his index finger in rapid succession on the table. Something he did when he was bothered and couldn’t get a smoke. He followed his gaze out the window. Miss Simma? He smiled inwardly, this will be very interesting.

“Excuse me, I’ll be right back.” He excused himself from the table as he went to invite her over for lunch.

So I was right. She really does know him. Sam watched as Kain observed the now very uncomfortable Raine. Neither had said a word since they got here. She just stared down as he stared at her. I was really surprised when the manager came up to us. To think I would get to meet them this quickly. It was definitely worth it, asking her to lunch. Sam had heard that the owner of Moondrop was in the city. Though very few knew him and little was known about him. It was also incredibly difficult to meet him. I must be really lucky. I wasn’t sure it was him I saw that day. To think they were really involved with each other. After witnessing the little show at the parking lot two days ago, he had asked around a bit. As it turned out, he had come to the hospital to see her and even dropped her off one morning. Really, I must have quite the luck. He rejoiced internally.

Carl followed the others to see them off while, Sam trailed behind. It had been a very awkward lunch for Raine, between Sam constantly trying to start a conversation with Kain and Kain’s indifferent attitude towards him, she could barely eat anything. Now they were left alone, but she still couldn’t bring herself to look at him. I was too uncomfortable to eat anything I have to make sure to get something when I get back. She made a mental note.

“You seem to be doing quite well.” A cold sarcastic remark caught through the silence.

She finally looked up. All the while his finger had been tapping the table nonstop. He was frowning.

“What?”

“Who’s your friend?”

“I don’t really think that is your business, is it?” she didn’t understand why, but his attitude and questions just brought forth an inexplicable wave of rage. “Is it really anything to you who I’m with?”

The tapping continued ran his fingers through his hair as he sank deeper into his seat, obviously displeased. “Why are you so hostile?”

“There’s nothing between us. You shouldn’t act so concerned.”

“What?” he fetched a piece of candy in his pocket and calmly unwrapped it before tossing it into his mouth.

“We have nothing to do with each other. It’s not as if you like me or I like you. Whoever I go out with should not be your concern.”

He leaned forward as he crushed the candy with his teeth. “You don’t like me and you think I don’t-”

“Kain we can leave now.” Carl had returned, interrupting him.

He let out a slow long exhale as he came to his feet, casting her a sharp look before walking away.

“Miss Simma, we have to leave now. I look forward to seeing you tonight with your friend. He said some very interesting things to me.” With a short goodbye, he trailed after Kain.

He’s the one that rejected me and didn’t call, what right does he have to get sarcastic with me? I’m the one that’s meant to be upset... her anger had in no calmed since leaving the restaurant. Sam had spent the ride back going on about how he couldn’t believe she knew Kain and Carl and some other nonsense that she didn’t bother listening to. I’ve been thinking about it for a while now, but this Sam guy is extremely annoying.

“Alright then, I’ll see you later tonight.”

“Hmm...” she walked into her office. What reason would I have to want to see you again?
