10.

Raine opened her eyes to find her head in buried in Kain’s chest and their bodies, a tangled mess. After careful effort she managed to release herself from his embrace without waking him up. Quietly she set her feet on the floor and looked around the room, folded neatly in a basket next to the bathroom door were her clothes. She pushed herself off the bed as she rose to her feet.

Letting out a surprised yelp, she fell on her knees. Her waist was weak, her body was sore and she had absolutely no energy. She looked at Kain on the bed. Good he’s still asleep. She mustered up whatever strength she could find and crawled to her clothes.

Without even a glance back she hurried out the door. Kain opened his eyes, a big smile plastered on his face.

She really is too cute. He thought as he sat up. He had woken up the moment she stirred. It took all he had in him not to laugh out as he watched her fall to her knees and crawl to her clothes. He reached for the note he left before she had left for him. “Thank you.” Was all she had written. A one night stand, huh? I should call Dawson... he rose from the bed, full of energy.

Millevern Greane wasn’t always a rich man but he was most definitely a lucky man; a crazy man with the devil’s luck surrounded by even crazier people. He won the lottery and disappeared with his prize money only to emerge almost 15 years later with both North City and West City in the palm of his hands. With the money he invested heavily in real estate, practically every penny had gone that. Rather than stopping him, Doore encouraged him and followed in his footsteps, pouring whatever funds she had into his pockets. Her sister, Lillian, joined the fray as her husband tagged along.

Five years later, their investment bore fruit but he didn’t stop there. He poured whatever profits he got into buying large portions of free land on the outskirts of both cities and set up a farm. When it produced profits, he poured it into something else and repeated the pattern until both North City and West City along with virtually everything along the way belonged to him. Dawson reminisced fondly about the beginning of the Greane Empire as he sat in his car on his way to the Green Olive hospital.

It’s truly a pity that Sunny is nothing like him, but both Kain and Casper are quite promising. He had been with the family for almost 20 years. Things will get very busy soon maybe I should take the family for a short vacation. He had gotten a call from Kain first thing in the morning. I really do pity the unfortunate person about to be out of a job... he shook his head as he parked his car.

“Is this everyone?” Dawson asked as he looked over the room.

“No. There is one more person but she is not around now. She was suspended” Angela, the human resource manager replied.

“Well, it’s fine.” He turned his attention to the room filled with doctors and nurses. “Good day. I understand that you are all busy so I will be brief. First of all, I am sure you are all aware of the impending change in management and as a result, your evaluation will be put on hold until further notice. Also, on behalf of Mr. Greane I am here to thank you all for your hard work over the years. He is very pleased with you and has made plans to reward each and every staff.” A loud cheer filled the hall. After the cheer calmed, he continued “Finally,-” he was interrupted by the sounds of sirens outside “You may all take your leave, I shall inform the respective heads of departments about the final announcement.” As the crowd dispersed he turned to Angela.

“About the lady that was suspended what is her name?”

“Miss Raine Simma of the paediatric department.”

“I see.” He nodded knowingly. “Well. Shall we head over to your office so you can tell me more of this?”

Once in her office, Dawson sat in her chair while she stood as he questioned her. “So you say Miss Simma slapped her immediate superior with her purse and then proceeded to punch him right after?”

“Yes sir.”

“And for that she was suspended and had her pay docked?”

“Yes sir.”

“I see. Whatever the establishment, there has to be discipline. I do believe that.” He nodded knowingly. “However, I would really like to know why she would do that. Can you tell me?”

Angela stayed quiet.

“Please invite the victim over.” Dawson added impatiently.

Shortly after, Peter, Raine’s supervisor came into the room.

“You are Miss Simma’s supervisor, correct?”

“Yes sir.”

“And she hit you?”

“Yes sir.”

“Why?”

The question startled Peter. He looked at Angela and back to Dawson.

“Sir, I simply offered her a little criticism concerning her attitude to work and she got violent.”

“When did this happen?”

“Two days ago, sir.”

“Where?”

“I’m sorry did you just ask where this happened?”

“Yes, I did. I’m asking you exactly where this incident occurred.”

Peter was silent for a while. “In the hospital.”

“In this hospital? Are you sure about that?”

“Y-yes sir.”

“Hmmm...” Dawson leaned forward. “You see, there was an incident two days ago at the Blue Moon hotel. A lady hit a man with her purse and punched him right after he said something, before leaving. I would really like to believe that we are talking about separate incidents, Mr. Peter. Are we?” he asked humoured.

Peter broke into cold sweat. “Sir, that young lady had quite a repute-” Angela began to explain but was interrupted by Dawson.

“Mrs. Manager, please I will get to you soon. Please wait calmly, okay?” he was smiling but his eyes weren’t. “Mr. Peter, I asked you a question. Are we talking about the same incident?”

“Yes sir.” He answered quietly with a trembling voice looking at the floor.

“Now, I would like to hear what happened.”

“She invited me out and asked if there was anything she could do for me to get a good evaluation, but I turned her down then she hit me and when I-”

“Stop.” Dawson leaned back and let out a long sigh looking up at the ceiling. This is starting to annoy me. “Mr. Peter, could it be that you intend to waste my time?”

“No Sir.”

“You are telling me that she offered you a service for a good evaluation and when you turned her down she hit you.”

“Yes sir.”

“This morning, I received a call telling me to go pull out weeds.” He stood and walked around the table. “You see, I went to the Blue Moon before coming here. However, the story I heard was completely different. I was told that you were in fact, the one who made the offer and she turned you down. When she was leaving you called her names which prompted her to hit you with her purse and then you said and I quote ‘You are just a slut that sleeps around what are you acting so innocent for?’ which is why she punched you. This is the testimony of not just 2 of the hotel staff but also a few people who were present. Are you trying to tell me that that misunderstood what was happening?”

“Sir, I’m-”

“Peter you are fired. Green Olive will not be giving you a recommendation, nor will you be receiving any form of compensation. Get out.”

“Sir, please I didn’t mean anything by it. Please-”

Dawson walked behind the desk and sat down. “Would you also like to be sued for sexual harassment?”

Peter stumbled out of the room. “Mrs. Manager, frankly, I’m not even in the mood to question you. You had a simple job and that is to make sure to propagate a work environment where everyone could work comfortably. Not only did you fail to do that but you also made biased decisions on the basis of hearsay.”

“I’m sorry. I will call her back. It won’t happen again.”

“You don’t have to do anything. And yes it won’t happen again because you will be replaced soon. A new manager will be here in less than an hour. Please pack your things and be ready to hand over by then.” Dawson picked his brief case and walked out of the room. He stopped in front of the door and added “Also, you will not be receiving any compensation or recommendation, because you neglected your duty, obviously.” And with that he was gone.
