13.

Luckily, there was little to do today. Should I order some food? Raine scrolled through the food delivery restaurants on her phone. Oriental? Would Argen like that? Pizza?... her train of thought came to an abrupt halt as she stopped surprised. Who is the animal that has trapped my car?

Someone had his car parked across the lot making it impossible for her to drive out. “It looks very expensive, should I scratch it?” she muttered to herself as she walked forward. Someone was leaning against the hood of her own car. “Hey! It’s you, right? You’re the owner of this monstrosity that has trapped me, aren’t you? Get that thing out of the way.” He straightened and looked straight at her with an amused smile.

“It’s you!” she exclaimed, eyes widened in surprise. “Move that thing out of the way.” She demanded.

“I’ll drive you.” Kain replied, still smiling.

“You’re not driving me anywhere. Can’t you see I have my own car? I can drive myself. Get out of the way.” She said as she reached into her bag for her keys, annoyed.

“Let’s have dinner.” Ignoring her objections, he walked around to the passenger’s side and held the door open.

“I have plans and I don’t want to go anywhere with you. Move.”

The expression on his face turned dark and unreadable. “Get in.” He said in a firm low voice. The look he gave her felt like he was saying ‘if you don’t get in, I will put you in.’ Feeling a little overwhelmed, she reluctantly climbed into the car. He leaned in, close enough for her to feel his breath, as he did her seatbelt. Shooting her a boyish smile, he closed the door and made his way to the driver’s seat. The drive to the Imperial Garden was filled with awkward silence. Well, it was for her. Once in a while, Kain would glance at her and fight back an amused smile. The fact that he seemed very entertained annoyed her the more.

After parking the car, he led her by hand into the Imperial Garden.

“Anything you like?” he asked, pulling out a chair for her.

“No.” She sat.

Her feisty reaction seemed to fuel his entertainment. He motioned for the waiter.

“Wine?”

“No. I still have to drive.”

“Hmmm...” placing a short order, he dismissed the waiter and turned his gaze to her. They stayed quiet for a while.

“What is this about?” She spoke finally, unable to stay silent.

“Dinner?” his head angled.

The waiter returned shortly after with their food. Neither made an attempt at the food. She sat staring at the plate before her and he sat watching her.

“Eat. Please.” He spoke after a while. “I want to buy you dinner.”

“It was a one-time thing. You don’t have to feel guilty or responsible towards me.” She stood.

He grabbed her hand from across the table. “That’s not it. I just want to have a meal with you.”

She sat, reluctantly. Content with her response, he withdrew his hand and they had their meal in silence.

“How have you been?” he started after their plates had been cleared away.

“We’ve had dinner. Can I leave now?”

“Why are you upset?”

Raine let out a sigh of complete disbelief. Is he really asking why I’m upset? “You... you can’t be serious.”

“I really don’t know.” he replied earnestly. It felt like she was being unreasonably mean to a child who couldn’t understand what he had done wrong.

Feeling resigned, “Kain, you... even though you were so...” she struggled to the find words to express herself. “All this time, you didn’t call. Even though you knew where I was you didn’t come to see me either. I was-”

“You didn’t leave your number.”

“What?” she was a little astonished.

“You didn’t leave behind your number. I thought you didn’t want to see me.”

“So, why are you here now?”

“I wanted to see you.” His earnest look didn’t waver for even a moment. Her initial annoyance had slowly begun to fade away.

“All this time?”

“I had to settle the details of my move.”

“You’re moving?” now curious. That’s right... he did say his apartment wasn’t ready.

“Yes, from West City.” The rest of their dinner was filled with meaningless back and forth conversations and occasional silence.

Kain was pleased with the way the night had turned out. Though, he didn’t expect her to be that upset. His unease was abated after they had talked. Did I overdo it? Maybe I should have come to see her earlier. He thought as he drove. Since leaving the restaurant, she had been quietly staring out the window.

“Where are we going? This isn’t the way to the hospital.” She asked suddenly.

“Home.”

“My car, it’s still at the hospital.”

“It’s fine.” She went quiet again and the journey continued in silence.

He pulled up on the curb.

“Your number?” he asked before she could dismount.

“What?” she unhooked the seatbelt.

“Can I have your number?” handing her his phone.

She thought for a while before taking his phone. She called her phone. “Here, now we have each other’s number.” Rather than the phone, he took her hand.

“I’ll come take you to work tomorrow, okay?” he caressed her palm tenderly with his thumb as he leaned back into his seat.

“I need to be in before six in the morning.”

“Hmm...”

They stayed quiet for several moments. Neither made any effort to leave.

“You need to go now.” Kain said as he reluctantly freed her hand as he finally took his phone.

“Okay.” She slowly got out and walked into Silver. He reached for a mint in the glove compartment as he watched her walk away and tossed it into his mouth, driving away only after making sure she had gone in.
