Once outside, Kain set Raine on her feet and untwining her arms from behind his neck. “Can you walk?” nodding she swayed a little. “Cold?” he asked as he supported her. It was a cool night. Luckily, decked in black leather pants, a loose top and boots, she wasn’t scantily dressed. He slipped his arm around shoulders causing her to lean heavily on him as he led her to a 24-hour store. Luckily there was one close by.

“Sit here.” Kain instructed as he went in.

I never expected her to be so obedient he thought to himself as he returned, with a bottle of water and a paper cup in hand, to her side. He squatted as he opened the bottle, filling the cup with water.

“Drink.” He fed it to her. Still obedient she drank it. He was starting to have mixed feelings about what had just transpired. I’m glad she came to me and is obedient and all, but what if she had gone to someone else? Upset by his own train of thought, he filled the now empty cup again as he stood and took a few steps back. He watched her intently for a short moment and she stared back at him with wide eyes.

Splash. Kain sent the contents of the cup across her face, evoking a surprised squeal from Raine.

Raine wasn’t all that drunk. Since leaving Moondrop, exposed to cool fresh air, she had sobered up a little. She had no idea why she was clinging to the man beside her or why she did whatever he asked of her. She had simply chucked it up to being drunk. The feel of cold water jolted her awake from whatever haze she had been. Whatever little alcohol in her system was completely gone now. She stared down at her soaked blouse in terror.

What is happening right now? What exactly just happened? She diverted her attention to the man she had been clinging to not long ago. He was struggling to hide his smile. He seemed to be very pleased with himself.

“Hey, you! What exactly are you trying to do?” annoyance swept over her. “What is so amusing about what you have just done?” she came to her feet.

He regarded her quietly; seemingly satisfied with the results of his actions he held her hand and began to lead her away.

“Where are you taking me to? What are you doing?” Raine asked as she struggled to free herself.

“You’re sober? Let’s go.” A nonchalant reply.

She dug her heels into the ground causing him to stop. He turned around, watching her curiously, head titled a little to the side. Her wrist still in his grip. “Where are we going to?”

“My hotel room. My apartment isn’t ready.”

“Huh?” she laughed sarcastically. “Did you just say you’re taking me to your hotel room? Ha! I must be really drunk.” She added mockingly.

He stepped in to close the distance between them. Leaning close to her ear she spoke softly “Your shirt is wet. We’re going to get you a change of clothes if not, I can send you home.” His smell flooded her nose as his voice sent a series of shivers down her spine with every word he had uttered. Suddenly, her knees went weak causing her to stumble. He caught her before she could fall to the floor. “Are you okay?” he asked with a concerned frown.

“Yes, just step back a bit.” She straightened as she pushed him away. Without budging, he picked her up.

“The hotel isn’t far from here. Just give me a minute.”

“Hey put me down. I said I’m fine.” He ignored her protests as he broke into a light jog, holding her tightly close to his chest, his smell invading her senses and the loud thumping of his heart drowning out her thoughts.

They arrived at the Grand Sonne hotel shortly after. He had offered her a t-shirt and a pair of shorts; both were his, albeit still new; stating that he had no clothes for women and instructed that she take a hot bath.

“Take your time. I’ll get you some food.” He had said before leaving her alone in the bathroom. There were clean towels and whatever else she may need. Putting her aside her clothes, she stepped into the shower.

“I can’t believe it.” Suddenly overwhelmed by embarrassment. “I really can’t believe I came on to a stranger. What am I doing?” she turned on the shower. Everything smelled like him.

It is such a nice smell. Argen is definitely going to skin me for this one. It then occurred to her that she had neither her phone nor her purse with her. “Argh!” she lamented “What on earth is wrong with me?”
