15.

“Stop shouting. She’s gone.” Argen reached for the case on the counter, appraising it closely as she made her way to the shelf. Seemingly content with what she had received, she pulled out the bottle, placed the case on the shelf before gently putting the bottle in front of it, in line with the others. She glanced over her collection proudly. She turned around to a gratified Casper watching her.

“What?”

“So... I’m special.”

“Who said you are?”

“You did. To your pretty actor friend.”

“What’s wrong with being pretty?”

“Nothing. Nothing at all.” He took a sip from his glass. “Would you like to have lunch tomorrow?”

“Yea, sure.” She cleared away Raine’s glass.

“Really?” he had asked expecting to be rejected.

“Yes. To check out the Imperial Garden, right?” she added as she washed the glass.

“Yes, it is.” It’s not what I had in mind, but whatever works.

I can just text him? Text him saying what exactly? She slumped into her chair after making her rounds. Wouldn’t it be better to make a call? I don’t know what his schedule is like, though. I guess a text would work. She pulled out her phone. Lunch? Dinner?

“Let’s see, I have the morning shift tomorrow, so I’ll be too tired after. Hmm... The day after tomorrow would work.” She muttered browsing through her mobile assistant. He won’t reject me right? A little unsure as she drafted her message.

“Dr. Simma?” a nurse poked her head into her office.

“Yes.” Her hand slid over the send button.

“The patient on bed 3 is refusing to eat.”

“Okay.” She stood up, leaving her phone turned upside down on her desk. “Let’s go.”

She exhaled. Time to send that message. She returned 30 minutes later to her phone.

“I have a message? Who?” curious, she unlocked her phone. Kain?

‘Dinner at 6 is fine. I’ll come to you.’ Why would Kain send me a- “When did I send the text?” she lamented.

“Kain.” Casper started.

“Hmmm?”

Neither turned away from the screen, engrossed as both tapped away at the game controls in their hands. Casper had ‘partially’ moved into his apartment. If he wasn’t at Silver or the office, he was here. His room at the hotel was now nothing more than a store for his things. This was one of such times.

“I saw Raine today.”

“Hmm.”

“She asked after you.”

“Hmm.”

“Is she the girl you like?”

“Yes.”

“I told her to text you.”

He reached over to ruffle Casper’s hair. “Good boy.”

Casper hit pause on their game. “You haven’t told her we’re cousins? She thinks we’re friends.”

“I will. Soon.” He made his way to the kitchen for a drink.

“Uncle... Can I take your baby out?”

“No.”

“But I did something good. Why?” He pouted. “So stingy.”

“Only after I take her out with it.” Distracted by his phone, he walked over to his seat. Slowly, a happy smile formed as he stared at the screen. She really did send a message.

‘I’ll be free on Wednesday anytime from 6:00p.m. Would you perhaps like to have dinner? My treat.’

“Why are you smiling so much?” a curious Casper leaned over to take a peek at his phone. “See? She really sent a message. Give me the keys to your motorcycle.”

“Later.” He caved in as he formed his reply.

Argen checked herself in the mirror. Is this really alright? The therapist said being able to relate with him casually is a sign of forgiving both myself and Casper, but is that really it? Not once have we spoken about what happened. Though the migraines have reduced and my ulcers seem to have eased up. She massaged her abdomen softly. The scars don’t itch anymore... Is this really fine? Her thoughts were interrupted by Casper’s call. They had set their little outing for 3:00p.m. the next day. It was 2:50 now. That’s right, Casper is never late for a date. No, no this isn’t a date. She reminded herself calmly as she patted down her bob and made her way out of the door.

I guess habits die hard. Argen never made people wait, always making sure to be at least 10 minutes early. Well, it’s the same for me. I never made her wait either... Casper mused as Argen came down the stairs. She really does look good with that haircut. Why did she even cut her hair? I can’t really ask that... he straightened as he flashed her a smile. There had been an unspoken rule to not mention anything that would hint, even in the slightest, at their past.
