“Argen, I’ve ordered some food. Your medicine is on the table, take me immediately if your headache gets worse, okay?” Raine spoke through the bathroom door to Argen who was in the shower.

They shared the apartment right above the bar. The two storey building belonged to Argen. It was her mother left behind after she passed 12 years ago. Although Raine spent most of her days in the hospital dorm, she spent her days here when she had much free time, like now.

Through unrestrained tears, they both relayed the events of their very unpleasant days over their dinner. After their tearful heart to heart they had settled down to watch a movie in a bid to relax a bit as Argen had agreed to not working for the night.

Their leisure time was interrupted as Raine’s phone lit up. A call came in, it was from her mother.

Raine’s relationship with her mother has never been the best. It worsened even more following the incident of four years ago. Letting out a long exasperated sigh “Can this day get any worse?” she muttered under her breath as she connected the call

“Why do you always insist on being a nuisance? You were suspended, come back home. It’s not like you’re doing anything over there.” Without giving Raine a chance to offer even a greeting she ended the call.

“That is obviously not happening.” She said tossing her phone aside. “Don’t you think someone should mix a drink for us?” as she hugged Argen.

“Hmm... What do you have in mind?”

“Moondrop. It has been a while since we’ve been to a club. We’ll become old soon,”

Argen laughed weakly. They were both 28 this year but it would not be a bad idea to have some fun now and then. “Let’s go tomorrow.”

“Yes. Let’s.” She hugged Argen tighter.

He wasn’t surprised when Sunny Greane had sent him a message asking to meet. After all, Sunny was truly a shameless man. A truly shameless and greedy man. He had conned Olivia, his mother, out of all her money. She had come to this city to make something of herself 35 years ago. She was 20 then. Unfortunately, she fell for the contemptible man that was Sunny. When his father, Millevern, had given him a small venture to manage to test his business acumen he used her ruthlessly to grow his enterprise. Working several jobs and acting as a corporate spy, blinded by her love for him, she foolishly did whatever he had asked of her. She gave him all her money and signed whatever papers he presented to her.

Soon, she got pregnant for him. He asked her to wait for him until he was settled before they could get married. Eventually, Sunny got married but not to her, to Rose. All the while, his parents had no idea what their only son had done. Sunny had set Olivia up for fraud and embezzlement. She took the fall for all the dirty things both he and Rose had done. She had being nothing more than a scapegoat for them.

She handed her poor child over to his parents who were beyond enraged when all this had come to light. Hurt from the betrayal and regret, too ashamed to return to her hometown, Olivia ended her life before the date the court had summoned her. Soon after, she was found guilty and the case ended. Sunny was disowned and disinherited. The enterprise he was given was all had gotten. Wanting nothing to do with the monster that was his son, Millevern happily handed it over. Since then, Millevern and Doore had raised him with great care and affection. For that, he was truly thankful.

Casper was 3 years then. Now, before him, was that same man and his wife.

I would have ignored them but I don’t need them hunting him down and playing petty distasteful tricks like before.

“How have you been? I heard you spent 4 years under Kain in West City?” Sunny tried to start small talk.

“Please don’t hold back. Eat something. You look like you haven’t been sleeping well.” Rose chimed in.

Casper watched them with a blank face and cold eyes. They were seated in a restaurant in the hotel he had been staying. No doubt they had heard about the plans of the audit and handover.

Maybe I should get a restraining order too. Both Millevern and Doore had gotten one when Sunny and Rose followed them everywhere and harassed them constantly. It got worse after she had her 3 children. Sadly, the children were just like them. They were stupid too. An even sadder fact. Stupid and entitled.

“I heard your grandparents are planning to move to withdraw and travel around for a while. Things must be busy for you.”

There we go they’ve finally stopped beating around the bush and gotten down to business.

“Why don’t you have your brothers Angus and Jason come work under you?”

“If you can also find a suitable position for Janette too, you know to help you lighten the load.” Rose added.

“What about your company? There should be more suitable positions for them over there.” The food before Casper still untouched. They had gone ahead and ordered a meal for him before he arrived.

Only God knows what they’ve done to it. Poisoning me is not above them.

Sunny froze.

“Don’t be silly, your siblings need experience to grow.” Rose said quickly.

“They’re not my siblings. Besides, I doubt they have any form of qualification or discipline to work under me.”

This quietened Rose for a while. “What are you trying to say about your brothers and sister?”

“I’m saying they’re stupid and entitled. They lack any ability to reason properly. Isn’t that why you are trying to make them somebody else’s problem?”

“What?” Sunny spoke, signs of anger had become visible now.

“Or could it possibly be that you’re almost bankrupt again and you’re trying to use your children to save your skin like before?”

“Is this how you speak to your father?” Rose spoke loudly. No doubt trying to draw attention to themselves.

“He is not my father.” Casper replied in a calm and indifferent tone. “If that is all, I have other things to do.” He stood to leave.

“Sit down there. You are nothing more than a bastard. How dare you?”

“True. You’re right I’m a bastard. It is quite unfortunate that I am in fact, your bastard.” He let out a humourless laugh.

Sunny was fuming now. He tossed the table aside and grabbed Casper by the neck. Rose screamed, scared. Just as he made to hit him a hand reached out, stopping him midway.

“Security?” Kain asked as he titled his head towards Casper. Water bottle in one and the other on Sunny’s shoulder. He was in gym clothes, no doubt on his way to get breakfast after a session. Kain had always been a health nut, maybe that’s why he looked 10 years younger instead of the actual 35 years that he is. It only just occurred to him that they had been staying in the same hotel all this time. He was too preoccupied with Argen.

“No. It’s okay. You don’t have to call them.”

Sunny pushed Casper to the ground, turning his attention to Kain. “This has nothing to do with you.”

“Leave.” Kain replied as he helped Casper to his feet.

Leaving the angry couple behind, both made way to their rooms.

“I’m going to my club tonight. Come with?”

“Sorry, I have to review details of the silk factory tonight.” Like he had thought, their rooms were opposite each other. They always took the same rooms for as long as he remembered.
