Dafne locked herself back in her room, afraid of seeing Samael again. She made Clair stay in the room until she managed to fall asleep because every time she closed her eyes, she saw Samael's distorted face on top of her.
"Clair."
"Yes?"
"Please don't go until I fall asleep."
"Yes, I promise."
Dafne slept holding Clair's hand, and although she was also a fragile woman, for some reason she felt safe if she was with her. Clair had become her grounding pole; if it hadn't been for that woman, she would have surely gone mad.
When the wounds on her back healed, she went back to the routine of eating with Samael and Das. The atmosphere was uncomfortable; the loving aura that normally emanated from those men was no longer there. She glanced sideways at Das; he looked thin and dull. Throughout the meal he didn't look at Samael once, and he left the table when he finished eating. She looked at his plate and noticed that he hadn't eaten even half of what he had been served. Seeing Samael watching him walk away with sharp eyes, she could sense that their relationship was in a complicated moment. She continued eating, pretending not to notice anything; she didn't want to get involved with them and then suffer the consequences.
"How's your back?"
A shiver ran down Dafne's spine.
"Fine."
Following that, she got up from the table and went to the greenhouse, expecting to find everything she had planted dead.
"Clair!"
The woman walked towards her solemnly.
"Can I offer you something?"
"Did you take care of my plants?"
Clair remained silent as a cold sweat ran down her forehead.
"Did you really take care of them?"
Dafne's tone of voice was emotional. Clair wanted to go along with it so as not to hurt her, but if her lie was discovered, it was going to be worse.
"No, it was young Das who took care of your plants."
Clair lowered her face, avoiding Dafne's expression. She thought she was going to feel hurt, and maybe she would even tear everything up out of anger.
"I see."
Dafne bent down and with her hands pulled out the weeds that had grown. Clair looked at her confused but didn't want to think about it anymore.
"Clair, what has changed in them? Did they fight?"
Dafne's voice was soft, sounding almost uninterested. Clair didn't know whether to tell her.
"They... They fought."
"Do you know why?"
"The day after that..."
Clair cleared her throat as her discomfort grew from telling Dafne that.
"Young Das went out and didn't come back to sleep. Master Samael got angry and didn't sleep that night. The next day, first thing in the morning, he went out to look for him, and as soon as they arrived, they shut themselves in the room. We don't know exactly what happened, but young Das didn't leave his room for two days, and he hasn't spoken a word to the master since."
Dafne's face was intrigued; she was curious as to what Samael could have done to provoke such an expression of sadness in her lover.
"Thank you, you may leave now."
Clair left and Dafne went out into the garden. As she walked, she saw Das sitting on the lawn playing with the cat. He was very big and beautiful. She smiled nostalgically as she watched him; he was no longer the little ball of fur running around the place. She approached Das; she had a feeling that the fight between him and Samael had been because of her.
"The cat... You've taken good care of him."
Das looked at her and immediately stood up.
"Yes, he's grown a lot, hasn't he?"
Dafne smiled, looking at the cat, then fixed her gaze on Das's face and noticed that the young man's eyes were red, as if he had been crying for days.
"Did you fight because of me?"
He was surprised; he never expected her to take the initiative to ask him anything. He shook his head and sat back down, stroking the cat. Dafne looked at him and noticed that he didn't want to talk about it, and she understood. She sighed and turned to leave.
"Oh, I almost forgot. Thank you for taking care of my plants."
Das answered without looking at her.
"At least that I can take care of."
She was confused; there was so much sadness in that sentence that she could even feel sorry for him. At dinner time, the three met again. It was the same atmosphere as in the morning. Dafne felt like she couldn't breathe because of how uncomfortable she was. She even thought she'd rather they be affectionate. She ate quickly and was the first to leave the table so she could be at peace in her room. Before falling asleep, she thought about Das's words and actions; it was like seeing herself when she discovered the deception. She wanted to think of it as karma, but for some reason, she didn't feel happy. She turned and looked at Clair, who had fallen asleep sitting beside her. She smiled and was grateful that she was on her side; at least she wasn't alone. The image of Das sitting alone in the garden came back to her mind, and she was glad she had left him the cat, at least that would help him feel better in those moments.
