Episode 5

On the way home, both were silent. The heated argument a while ago had left Daphne hurt. Never in her life had she received such a look of superiority and contempt. She felt inferior, small, and for a moment, she felt she didn't deserve to be with Samael. When they got out of the car, he took her by the arm, gently pulling her towards him. He wrapped his arms around her waist and gave her a warm hug that made her feel comforted.

Days passed, and Daphne forgot what had happened. Without realizing it, she had already created routines in her new home. Since the servants didn't speak her language, her interactions were limited to Clair and Samael. Samael returned to his work schedule as usual, and he spent little time at home. She felt lonely but appreciated that he never broke his promise to always have dinner with her. Every morning she would wake up, take a bath, and then go out to have breakfast with Clair. She hated eating alone and would always invite her to eat with her. Afterward, she would call her mother and talk about trivial things. She liked to see them daily because that way, they wouldn't feel abandoned. After a few days, she started to get bored with her routine. She was a free spirit who hated confinement. She wanted to go out, walk, ride a bike, but thinking about how cold it must be outside, she preferred to stay in. However, she started going out with Clair to buy groceries. It was entertaining for her to choose things she had never seen before; it was like a little girl in a candy store buying her favorite sweets. Little by little, she was gaining the affection of the employees. Although they couldn't communicate by speaking, she would prepare small snacks and distribute them among everyone. She was happy to feel the warm gazes of everyone as they greeted her courteously.

"Did you cook again today?"

Samael asked her as he put a big bite in his mouth.

"Yes, do you like it?"

"Of course, it's delicious. But you don't have to make my dinner; that's what the employees are for. Although I must say that I prefer your food a thousand times over."

"I know, but I get bored, and these things help me keep myself entertained, and besides... I don't think it's wrong to cook for my husband."

She took his hand, and he looked at her tenderly.

"Honey... I've been here for almost half a year now, and I would like to start learning the language."

"You are right; I had forgotten. I apologize."

"When do you think I can start?"

"I'll talk to my assistant tomorrow. I'll have someone come and teach you."

Daphne's face lit up; she got up from her seat and sat on her husband's lap, showering him with kisses.

"Thank you!"

Two days later, as he had promised, a woman arrived to teach her. She was a tall, blonde woman with a few wrinkles on her face; there were so many traces of the beauty the woman had had in her youth.

"Shall we begin?"

asked the woman with a kind smile. Daphne blushed at being caught staring at her and nodded. Time flew by; the class was over, and Daphne sighed as she realized how complicated the language was. She wasn't sure if she would be able to master it in the time she had predicted. When Samael arrived, she hugged him, a little depressed. He stroked her head.

"What happened? Didn't you like the person I sent?"

"It's not that... Just let me hug you for a few more minutes."

As she hugged him, she began to feel sad. She wanted to study, and she felt like she was wasting her time. Suddenly, her parents' words came to mind, and she reacted.

"Come on, let's eat. You must be tired."

That night, she could hardly sleep, trying to eliminate the bad thoughts. Although she was happy with her marriage, she felt incomplete. The following classes continued, and she put all her energy into trying to learn faster. She filled the house with small pieces of paper naming each object. She was satisfied to be able to say some basic things to the employees and for them to understand her. Samael would watch her practice before bed and scold her for being so diligent. He pulled her to bed and showered her with kisses while looking at her with eyes full of passion.

The next day, as Daphne helped Samael with his tie, she remembered something.

"Honey, I forgot to tell you. A few days ago, I thought I saw a car arrive at that house."

"Which house?"

"The guest house, the one that's abandoned. Are they renovating it?"

Samael's face tensed, and he took a few steps away.

"What was the car like?"

"Mmm, it was a small car, if I remember correctly, it was red."

"I see, it must be my grandmother."

"Grandmother? Is she planning to use the house?"

"I don't know."

She noticed his discomfort and assumed that he had not yet reconciled with his grandmother. That night, Samael arrived after midnight. He looked annoyed, and she preferred not to ask anything. While they were in bed, she felt him distant. He was lying with his back to her, and at that moment, she felt that the room and the bed were unnecessarily large.
