Susan had returned to Daniela's house, not wanting to worry her mother. The young woman sensed that her mother was interested in matters with Arturo, and she didn't want to add to her worries. Her father's slow recovery was already weighing heavily on her mother, a man she only visited when he was asleep.
Midnight had arrived, and Susan stepped out into the patio. Daniela's family house was impressive, though not as much as Arturo's villa. It had its own charm. Her friend had gone out for a business dinner, leaving Susan with solitude as her only companion. The strong north wind blew, causing her to shiver, but she stayed there until the ground seemed to want to overpower her. She believed her sister and Arturo were having a great time, and that made her happy. She only wanted her sister to be happy.
A month had passed, and four months of marriage. Since that night, Susan hadn't seen Arturo again. She knew one of his companies was going through a small crisis, and of course, Gabriela had gone with him.
Susan now lived with Daniela in an apartment. "Why did you buy an apartment if you're going to be afraid to live there?" Daniela asked.
"Instead of complaining here, why don't you find out where Arturo and Gabriela are and sue Arturo for abandoning the family?" Daniela said, a wicked smile on her face.
"Huh?" Susan seemed to become dumbfounded. "On what grounds would I do that?" The young woman closed the romance novel she was reading on the NOVELTOOM app. The story was titled "ALPHA HADES."
"Can't you see he abandoned his son?" Daniela said, bringing out a small, not-so-small Jack and placing the puppy on the sofa.
"Stop uttering nonsense," Susan smiled as she held Jack in her arms.
"They're not nonsense; they're Jack's parents. You should ask for child support. You haven't spent a damn cent of his money in four months of marriage. He should compensate for his abandonment," Daniela said.
"Are you drunk, Daniela?" Susan restrained herself from bursting into laughter.
"No, today I'm being realistic. He's been out of the city for a month. I suppose you've become a virgin again since he used to sleep with you every night," Daniela said.
"Enough, Daniela," Susan covered the puppy's ears.
"In the story you're reading, well, in that story, the leader fakes his death to protect his wife and puppy. Oh, they weren't even destined to be together, yet they end up loving each other more than anyone else. So it's not impossible for you and Arturo to end up together, loving each other and giving me many..." Daniela immediately fell silent, realizing how close she was to saying something impossible for Susan.
"What's wrong, Daniela?" Susan wasn't foolish; she immediately understood that Daniela had avoided saying they should have many children so she could be called an aunt. Of course, she knew her friend well.
"It's absolutely nothing. I was about to say something imprudent, and since Jack is still young, I better keep my mouth shut. It's probably best if we go for a walk," Daniela replied.
"Don't you have to work?" Susan looked at her suspiciously.
"No, my father adores me, so he'll give me all his money," Daniela quickly retracted upon seeing Susan's disapproving gaze. "Just kidding. I'll go to the company this afternoon. Aunt Gema wants us to have lunch with them today. You know Uncle is doing well, so I'd rather accompany you there."
An hour later, two women accompanied by a puppy arrived at the Fontaine Mansion. Susan's heart hammered in her chest upon seeing her father sitting on the sofa, especially since he didn't like puppies.
"Father, I'll be back in a moment," Susan said as she was about to take Jack outside.
"Where is your husband?" Gabriel Fontaine had a stern look on his face, while Gema and Daniela remained on the sidelines.
"He's resolving an issue in one of his companies. He's out of England."
"The brewery? No, it's not going to be that one because it's here. The wine factory in Chile? Cancun and its hotels? Uruguay? The meat exported from Paraguay? There are many companies, Susan. Which one is having problems?" Her father's question had made it clear to her that she absolutely knew nothing about Arturo. In fact, she didn't even know he had such foreign businesses. Well, she did know, but she didn't know they were related to those products.
The atmosphere felt tense. Susan didn't know how to respond to her father, and Jack barked, frightening Susan, who was already expecting a scolding from her father.
"Let's not stress me out, let's go have lunch. I'm hungry," Gabriel stood up, heading towards the dining room. Susan was going to leave the dog outside. "I haven't told you to take him, Susan. Could you do me a favor and leave him there and come to eat?" Gabriel Fontaine had a stern voice.
"Yes, Dad," Susan hadn't been scolded. Gema patted her daughter's back and went to get the food. Ever since Gabriel fell ill, she had taken care of the cleaning and cooking to avoid excessive expenses, so it was easier this way.
"Why don't we have servants?" Gabriel asked.
"While you were sick, so I wouldn't get bored, I decided to do the chores myself," Gema lowered the tray, and the smell of roasted pork made Susan's stomach growl.
"For how many days haven't you eaten, girl?" her father asked. "Daniela, aren't you feeding my daughter?"
"Uncle, how could you think that?" Daniela also seemed more at ease. The meal went by in complete tranquility. For Susan, it was strange that Arturo was not mentioned again, nor Gabriela.
Both young women had returned to the apartment. Daniela had gone to her father's company, and Susan had stayed alone. It was 2 o'clock in the afternoon when the doorbell rang, and Susan, who was watching TV, furrowed her brow. She didn't know who it could be, but mentally scolded herself if she had to go to open the door to find out.
The young woman hesitated as she was about to open the door. That intense gaze made her small body tremble. "Are you married to Daniela?" Arturo Lacronte stood right in front of her, his mood seemingly terrible.
