Anya arrived home and, upon finding out her brother was back, ran to him: "You idiot! Where have you been? You vanished for days, didn't take your medication, and your phone wasn't even working. I went to your work to see if I could get some news, and no one could tell me anything, not even that disgusting boss of yours. What happened to you, after all?"
Mark looked at her, smiling: "Hello to you too, my dear sister," and hugged her.
Anya kicked back, returning the strong embrace: "You have no idea how worried I was about you, you fool."
Mark pulled away, wiping her tears: "Forgive me for everything I put you through, my beautiful sister?"
Anya looked at him with red eyes: "What happened that made you disappear like this? Were you abducted by aliens, by chance?"
Mark burst out laughing: "You know, it was almost like that, sis. But it was because of the work I was doing. I'm finished for now; I won't disappear for a while, I promise."
Anya stared at him: "Do you promise?"
Mark looked at her, smiling: "Yes, I promise. Now let me get to work; I have a lot to catch up on." He kissed her forehead as he left.
Smiling, Anya followed behind him, talking nonstop. Outside, she saw a car waiting with a driver inside: "What is this, brother? What are you lying about to have a car like this waiting for you?"
Mark looked at her, smiling: "I think you'll be seeing this a lot for a while. And don't worry, I'm not lying about anything wrong." He got in the car, waved goodbye to his sister, and left with a deep sigh.
The driver looked at him through the rearview mirror: "Are you alright, sir?"
Mark looked out the window: "I'll be fine. Don't worry."
The driver continued to look at him as he drove towards his work.
Meanwhile, Lorenzo was in his car, escorting two huge container trucks that were heading down the highway to the warehouse.
Willy looked at Lorenzo, who was on his phone: "Do you really think they might try something against us?"
Lorenzo looked at him: "My information is that my father's enemies didn't accept that the Maximilianos would remain in control of everything after his death. So, they're trying to weaken us in every way possible. That's why I came personally to escort our cargo."
Willy looked ahead: "That's crazy, boss. You're putting your life in danger too, this way."
Lorenzo looked at him: "I'm the head of the Maximiliano family. I can't stay hidden all the time. And don't worry, I know what I'm doing."
He'd barely finished speaking when several motorcyclists appeared on all sides, along with cars carrying armed men who began firing at them.
The truck drivers started trying to defend themselves from the shots, maneuvering as best they could, causing chaos on the road.
Lorenzo then grabbed his gun and returned fire at the motorcyclists and the men in the cars who were ramming his vehicle, trying to force it off the road.
Willy swerved the car behind the truck, but one of the motorcyclists jumped onto their car and started shooting inside, hitting Lorenzo squarely in the shoulder. Lorenzo grabbed his gun and shot the man, hitting him with everything, sending him tumbling onto the road.
Willy looked at him: "We need to stop this bleeding, boss."
Lorenzo tied a cloth around the wound: "Follow the truck and be careful."
The car continued to ram the truck with force and hit one of the truck's tires, causing the driver to lose control and overturn on the road.
Lorenzo, who was right behind in the car, ended up getting caught in the accident as well, veering off the road and plummeting down the cliff.
The motorcyclists stopped following the other truck, their eyes fixed on the car that had fallen off the cliff.
The overturned truck began to leak gasoline, and people quickly started running from the scene. Seconds later, everything exploded.
The cars and motorcycles immediately left the scene, leaving behind a trail of destruction and bullet casings.
Sometime later, the firefighters, police, and ambulances arrived at the scene, tending to the victims who remained and also interrogating them. The firefighters were having difficulty controlling the blaze.
Back at work, Mark was finishing up the tasks he needed to catch up on when he was summoned to his boss's office.
Mark knocked on the door, received permission to enter, closed the door behind him, and approached the desk.
The boss looked at him with that disgusting smile of his: "Finally, our illustrious journalist has graced us with his presence! Can you tell me what you were doing during all this time you were gone?"
Mark looked at him: "I don't believe my personal life is anyone's business, sir. And my work isn't behind schedule. After all, I always leave everything ready for the articles and prepared for publication. So, my absence didn't cause any harm to my work."
The boss looked at him, smiling: "As always, you have your answers ready at the tip of your tongue. But what about those photos you were supposed to get? Do you have them with you?"
Mark stared at him: "What's your great interest in this revelation of the new head of the Maximiliano family? He's not a movie star or a singer to be in the media. I really don't understand, boss."
The boss continued to look at him, smiling: "You know, I think you're in the wrong profession. You should be a police detective, not a journalist. My interest, like everyone else's, is strictly professional and nothing more. So, since I answered your question, do you have the photos or not?"
Mark looked at him: "No, I don't have them, and I'm not going to get them. I'm already on another case, unfortunately, that's much bigger than this one."
The boss jumped out of his chair, furious, slamming his hands on the desk: "What do you mean you don't have them yet? And why aren't you going to get them? Don't tell me you've already paid off your family's debts and don't need the money anymore, you idiot?"
Mark looked at him seriously: "Your interest in this man is strange, boss. And if you really want them, ask someone else. I'm out. And my family's debts are none of your business either. Don't bring them into our work matters again. I've made myself clear, sir." He left, slamming the door.
The boss stared at the door and smiled: "Even angry, he's handsome," he said as he sat down.
Mark went to get some water and ended up hearing on the news about what had happened on the highway, that the accident was serious and there were many injured at the scene. When Mark saw Lorenzo's car being towed from the cliff, he dropped his glass on the floor and ran out without saying a word to anyone. Reaching the parking lot, he called his driver, told him what had happened, and asked to be taken to the scene immediately.
The driver quickly got in the car and headed for the location.
