Episode 4

Adam: I meet Sara's eyes, her gaze distant, Mileide almost sprinting out of the church dragging the maid with her.

What the hell are you talking about?

Sara: We are in God's house, Adam.

Adam: My patience is wearing thin.

Sara: I stay put and hear Adam approaching with heavy footsteps, seeming to snort with rage.

Adam: I grip Sara's face with one hand quite roughly, and she doesn't even flinch.

You think you're safe because we are in a church? Know that your hell starts today.

Sara: I'm not afraid of you, Adam, I'm just moving from one hell to another.

Adam: You should be scared, Sara!

I release Sara's face and grab her wrist tightly to lead her out of the church. Mileide was indeed hurrying; she's nowhere to be seen out here.

Sara: I'm roughly thrown into the car. I settle in and look for the seatbelt, put it on, and close my eyes in hopes of a few minutes of peace.

Adam: As we head to the estate's banquet hall, I notice the red marks on Sara's wrist and chin. Little does she know, I won't rest until I've destroyed her.

You'll need to act like my wife, Sara, remember we'll be in front of my father, my biggest investors, and the board of my company.

Sara: Alright.

Adam: Sara keeps her eyes closed.

Make sure you understand, otherwise I'll ruin your father's business and his life!

Sara: I told you, it's fine, Adam. Have you never heard the saying 'if you're going through hell, keep going'? Well, that's what I'll do.

After a few minutes, the car stops, and Adam helps me out, assuming there are people watching by the way he's feigning courtesy. He starts introducing me to some people on the way, holding me firmly by the waist; it hurts where I hurt my rib, but I manage to mask the pain as best I can.

Adam: Fix that damn face, Sara!

Sara: You're hurting me, Adam, it's hard to smile.

Adam loosens his grip around my waist a little, and I can even breathe better.

Thank you!

Adam: My father is coming our way; his name is Marcos, and my mother is Lara.

Dad, you'll finally meet Sara.

Marcos: Sara, it's a pleasure to meet you.

I extend my hand to Sara, who remains still.

Sara: Honey, could you help me? I would like to greet your father.

Marcos: I don't understand.

Adam: Silly me, Dad, Sara is blind.

Sara reaches out her hand, and my father shakes it.

Marcos: Sara, dear, it was a pleasure to meet you.

Adam, can you come with me for a moment?

Adam: We'll talk tomorrow, Dad, I won't leave my wife alone at our wedding party.

Marcos: How did you two meet?

Sara: Adam knows my stepmother. Mileide introduced us.

Marcos: Mileide, the widow of Joseph?

Sara: That's her.

Marcos: Joseph was a great friend. Your father seems like a good man, Sara.

Sara: He is the best.

(Lara, 46 years old. Adam's mother)

Lara: Son! My, what a treasure my daughter-in-law is, you are beautiful.

Sara: I am caught by surprise with a warm hug.

Marcos: My love, Sara, our son's wife is blind, you might have startled her.

Lara: Oh my, I'm so sorry, my dear.

Sara: No need to apologize, it's okay.

Lara: Excuse me for asking, but you can't see anything?

Sara: No, I lost a hundred percent of my vision at seventeen.

Lara: I'm so sorry, my beautiful.

Sara: It's okay. If you don't mind my feet are killing me, could we sit for a bit?

Lara: Of course, we'll greet a few more people and then join you.

Adam takes Sara away, and I try to hide my concern. He's not patient or even loving, he was a spoiled child and even though we showered him with love, we failed by compensating absence for work by giving him everything he wanted when he wanted. I know my son and it's not hard to see that this girl will suffer at his hands.

Marcos: What's worrying you, my love?

Lara: This girl is going to suffer, my dear.

Marcos: Maybe she'll be Adam's salvation.

Lara: At what cost?

Adam: We sit and many people greet us; I see Carlos enter furiously with Mileide. I stand up and toast to him in an attempt to prevent him from causing a scene.

May I have everyone's attention for a moment, please? My dear father-in-law has just entered with his wife, and I would like to take this opportunity to announce the recent merger of our companies. As some of you may have noticed, Sara is blind; we hid our relationship because we didn't want media attention while getting to know each other. I fell in love with her and here we are, married and happy. Thank you all for coming despite everything being decided so suddenly.

Carlos: I approach Adam and speak so only he can hear.

The deal is off, Adam, my daughter goes back with me, and you can keep the company, I don't care.

Adam: Unfortunately, father-in-law, things don't work that way. We're married now.

Sara: Dad, I'll be okay!

Mileide: Honey, she's fine, we don't need to make a scene here.

Carlos: Sara...

Sara: It was my decision, Dad, it all ends in a year. You taught me that a person should keep their word, I gave mine.

I hug my father and hold back tears as much as possible. We talk for a bit, and I manage to calm him down.

Carlos: I stay close to Sara, my heart crushed. We still haven't found Lize, and I can hardly breathe at the thought of Sara getting married to save the companies.

Adam: You know you're going to pay dearly for this, don't you, Mileide?

Mileide: I believe you'll thank me for all this eventually.

Adam doesn't respond, but from his icy look, I can tell I'm in trouble.

Adam: We need to dance to open the dance floor.

Sara: I can't dance, Adam, you'll have to lead me on the dance floor.

Adam: A blind and useless bride! Great!

Sara: Calling me blind and useless doesn't offend me.

Adam: I walk to the dance floor with Sara. I grip her waist with the force I wish I was gripping her neck; she moans softly in pain, biting her lips hard. What could be wrong with this useless thing?

Don't tell me that in addition to being blind, you're also a dying woman!

Sara: You're not that lucky, Adam.

We dance to a never-ending song; I rest my head on Adam's chest, I'm exhausted. He pushes me away roughly at the same time, and I nearly fall.

Adam: Don't take liberties!

Sara: It was involuntary; I'm tired!

Adam pulls me in, and we continue dancing.

Adam: That's your problem.

Sara: What are you afraid of, Adam? I was just resting my head on you.

Adam: I'm not afraid of anything!

Sara: I believe you are afraid of falling in love with your blind wife.

I say jokingly.

Adam: You're a child. I like women, preferably tall, blonde, and attractive. I will never fall in love with you!

Sara: Never is a long time, Adam, but trust me, I would never want a man like you to fall in love with me.

Adam: I would never be interested in you!

Sara: Great, that's a relief.
