the knocking continues.

Miss Carlotta

Phoebe, please, are you there? It's urgent.

Phoebe

Just a moment!

I quickly throw on my robe and head for the front door.

I open the door, blinking in the sunlight .

It's my neighbour, Ms. Carlotta, wringing her hands in distress.

Phoebe

Ms Carlotta? What's wrong?

Miss Carlotta

Oh, my dear, it's terrible, so terrible!

I inhale sharply, full of dread.

Phoebe

What is it? What has happened?

Miss Carlotta

They've closed the town gates! No one can enter or leave!

Phoebe

What?! By who's orders?!

Miss Carlotta

The Bishop declared it, this morning, but he wouldn't tell us why!

Miss Carlotta

Where is your father? Does he know anything?

I hesitate, floundering for words.

Phoebe

Um... He's, um, asleep.

Phoebe

I don't think he knows anything.

Her eyes well up with tears.

Miss Carlotta

Oh, it's terrible! What is going to happen to us?

Phoebe

(I should say something to comfort her.)

Phoebe

It will be alright, Ms Carlotta.

Phoebe

The best thing we can do is try to remain calm and help others.

I offer her one of my handkerchiefs.

Miss Carlotta

Oh, thankyou.You're too kind.

She dabs at her eyes, sniffling.

Miss Carlotta

You're right, Phoebe. I shouldn't worry myself into a frenzy.

She smiles and steps back.

Miss Carlotta

Well, I shouldn't keep you.

Miss Carlotta

Please come see me if you or your father need anything.

Phoebe

I- we will, thank you.

I shut the door and lean against it ,heart pounding.
