Caspian froze once again, furious at how Sam was so right. "Shut up..."
"Leo was a very giddy man. He always takes something positive out of a situation and somehow manages to smile, just like Kaya."
"Shut up."
"And the situation they were in? It was similar to how you first met Leo and Theo."
"Shut up!"
"Sir, I'm not telling you this as your butler, I'm telling you this as your friend. You have to stop pushing other people awa--"
"I said shut up!" Caspian screamed at the top of his lungs and threw his phone across the room out of anger. He took deep breaths, his hands balled into fists, as Sam just stared at him blankly. Caspian's gem glowed for a split second. His anger had almost activated his gem. Almost.
"Sam..." Caspian continued to take deep breaths as he gathered what was left of his phone. "You are-"
"Caspian, watch out!"
Everything happened too quickly. Something had crashed through the window and pounced at Caspian. Sam, however, had seen the thing and hugged Caspian to protect him. At that moment, Caspian saw the thing that was pouncing towards him and Sam. He didn't know how to describe it.
To him, it looked like some kind of mutated cockroach. Caspian's eyes were wide as Sam fell, the insect now stuck on his back. He fell on his knees as he stared. He couldn't believe it. Sam had just protected him. Sam chuckled, then he screeched in pain when the thing started digging into his back.
"I've always thought of you as a friend, Caspian."
There was a loud crash from the door but Caspian really didn't care at the moment. Clover literally burst into the room, his hands engulfed in flames. As soon as he saw Sam, he stomped towards Caspian and pulled him by the collar.
"You--"
"Clove, wait!" Kaya stopped Clover and pointed on Sam, who was now unconscious. She flinched as the insect continued to dig. "That insect... told you about it, right?"
"Shit." Clover muttered as he let go of Caspian's collar. Caspian just stared at Clover and his flames, speechless at the events talking place. As he stared at Sam, who was strangely starting to pale, he realized something very, very important.
All throughout his life, he only thought of Sam as his butler, someone he could order around without question, someone who was present when his parents weren't. Do this, do that.
To him, a butler was like a robot, someone below him who would cower at his every word. Sam never complained, even during the times when he treated him like an animal. Although it was too late, he had finally realized it. Sam was more than a just a butler, he was his friend, his only friend.
"..Save him."
Clover raised an eyebrow while Kaya blinked and asked back. "What?"
"Save Sam." Caspian chewed on his lip and stared at the ground, tears threatening to spill out of his eyes. "Please."
Kaya stared at Clover, feeling sympathetic towards Caspian, despite her anger towards him. During her two weeks alone, she had learned more about the insect. It was from Holen and it would choose a host, then it would secrete a venom into the host's spinal cord and mutate into a monster, unlike anything ever imagined. Touching the insect would give her a high chance of fusing into the mutation. In other words...
"There's nothing we can do." Clover blurted out while shooting small flames at the insect, which didn't react. "Look, it won't even budge when I burn it. It's hopeless."
Kaya glared at Clover, who just shrugged without a care, for being too blunt. He basically told Caspian that Sam was going to die.
Kaya definitely didn't expect Caspian to pounce on Clover and slam him to the wall. He had gritted and anger was burning in his eyes, even more than Clover's flames. Caspian's gem glowed again, this time Kaya caught it, before it faded. It wasn't enough.
"Do not tell me that it's hopeless." Caspian hissed."You obviously know a lot more than I do, flame boy. Do something about Sam."
"We can't!" Clover spat, his eyes glowing even brighter. "That thing is secreting a venom that will fry his brain, then it will turn him into a monster. Touching it will mutate you as well."
"Not on my watch." Caspian let go of Clover and stomped towards Sam. He flipped his body over, becoming face to face with the insect, before grabbing it with both of his hands.
"Caspian, stop!"
The purple goo from the insect started crawling up to Caspian's hands but he didn't care. Right now, he was willing to do anything to save Sam. Caspian kept tugging, making the insect scar his arm and now the goo was going up to his arms. He started to become woozy, most probably because of the goo but he forced himself to stay awake.
"C-Clover, do something!" Kaya said, in complete panic mode.
"I'm thinking, damn it!" Clover hissed in annoyance before he ran, an idea popping up in his head. Clover grabbed Caspian's hands, the goo crawling up to his palms, before he engulfed his own hands in flames. The goo hardened, turning brittle, before breaking apart, releasing both Clover and Caspian's hands.
"Are you stupid?!" Clover shook Caspian's shoulders and screamed right at his face. "Are you trying to get yourself killed?!"
"Does it matter if I die?!" Caspian screamed back, his words taking Kaya and Clover by surprise. "Let go of me, I need to talk to--"
A soft gasp left their mouth upon what happened next. Sam, who had fully mutated, was now a weird octopus-like monster. His skin was pale and his eyes were just white. His hands were now spiked tentacles and one of them was piercing through Caspian's stomach.
Sam, no, the monster, withdrew the tentacle as Caspian fell on the ground with a thud. Both Kaya and Clover stared in shock, processing what just happened. Clover was the first one to snap back into reality and when he did, a tentacle was aiming for his face.
As he dodged it and started shooting out flames, Kaya stared at Caspian and fell on her knees. Seeing him dying took a toll on her, especially because he was a wonder and she was his guardian. Kaya couldn't let Caspian die, she couldn't. The death of one wonder meant the death of everyone else.
"I can help him." Kiya spoke in Kaya's head out of nowhere.
"You know what, Kiya? I won't even ask. Just help Caspian."
"You need to get close-"
However, before Kaya can come to his aid, a tentacle wrapped around her waist and pulled her out of the room and raised her in the air. The monster that used to be Sam was in the hallway, while Clover stood in front of it.
"Stay still, Cow." Clover smirked, dragon scales appearing on his face once again, his nails turning into claws. "I'll get you down in a jiffy."
