Kaya tossed and turned in her place, her whole body aching and her head throbbing badly. She wasn't even on a bed. Instead, She was on the cold hard ground and she had no idea where she was. The room was screaming white and it seemed endless.
Kaya sat up, while rubbing her head and looked around, hoping to see a window, a door or any form of escape. Unfortunately, there was none and she was officially alone in an infinite white room. Only one thought entered her mind right now.
She was dead.
"So this is what it's like to be dead, huh?" She said, sarcastically as she got up and picked up her jacket, which was strangely off her and on the floor.
"Who knew that I would be lonelier than I already was..."
Since Kaya literally had nothing to do, she decided to walk around. It was as if she wasn't moving at all, since her surroundings didn't change and there was absolutely no way to tell where she was. She didn't know how long she has been walking so she decided to look at her wristwatch and frowned when she saw that its frozen, stopping exactly at 7:07 pm. Frustrated, she tapped the smooth quartz to hopefully make it work but it didn't. This made her really wonder where she was. A place where time doesn't exist? Heaven? Hell? Purgatory? She honestly had no idea.
"Well, you don't need a watch when you're dead." She shrugged before slipping off the watch and tossing it in front of her. Unlike what she expected, there was no clink of the metal colliding with the ground, which made her confused.
"What in the---"
"You're not dead, Kaya."
Kaya's eyes widened when purple mist came out of nowhere and swirled around in front of her. Eventually, it formed into a shape of a person, the smoke fading away, revealing someone familiar. It was the robed woman, the same one she saw in her dream all these years. She wasn't sure which was more terrifying, possibly being dead or being alone in this place with a woman who had piercing purple eyes.
For a moment, the woman just stared, shadows of what she assumed to be a million tortures souls swirling in her eyes. Her mouth was slightly ajar and she could see the tips of her fangs sticking out of her upper lip. The hood of her robe was covering her entire face and the only reason why Kaya could see her eyes was because they were glowing. Slowly, the woman raised one of her hands. Kaya flinched at how sickly purple her skin was and her black nails were as long as a snake's fangs. In between her fingers was a silver metal watch, this time ticking, the sounds of running time echoing in the area.
"Time is a precious element for you humans." The woman said, her mouth not moving, which made Kaya stare. After a while, she realized that the woman's voice was in her head. "This tool, is one of the most impressive inventions of your species. Something as tiny as this, recording the passage of time and space? Pure genius."
"Who are you?" Kaya spoke up after gathering some courage, her throat dry. The woman's purple orbs shifted towards Kaya, making her back away instantly. "Stay away from me."
"I won't hurt you, Kaya." The woman was levitating towards her, the tips of her toes nearly brushing against the floor. "Also, you're not dead. I merely brought you to a space between the dimensions, where we can talk alone."
Nope. Not today, Satan.
Kaya swiftly turned around and broke into a run but was blocked by a gigantic purple wall of energy. Seeing this reminded her of him, the boy who saved her, the boy who had tried to save her orphanage. She wondered, was he dead as well? What did he mean that he was only half-human? She couldn't even count the number of unanswered questions she had.
"Ah, I see, you met him." Kaya jumped when she heard the woman's voice and felt a presence behind her. She turned around and became face to face with her, shocking her so much that she fell on the ground.
"Interesting that you've met the bearer."
"B-Bearer? What are you talking about?!" She screamed in fright as the woman stood in her place, staring down at her with those burning eyes. Her back was leaning on the wall, nowhere to run, nowhere to hide. She was trapped.
"You haven't answered my question! Who are you?! Why do you keep appearing in my dreams?!"
Instead of replying, the woman stuck out her hand once more. Kaya stared at it in confusion, before she said,
"You're burnt. Let me see your hands."
"Don't touch me."
"I won't hurt you, Kaya."
There was something in the woman's voice that just... persuaded Kaya. She knew that there was some kind of... power behind it but she could only watch herself as she placed her hands in the woman's. It was like she was the soul of a puppet and couldn't control her own movements. Her eyes were wide as purple mist started surrounding her hands.
Kaya winced because of a slight sting then it faded, revealing her healed hands. It was as if she was never injured in the first place. She stared at her hands in awe, especially because she thought she was hostile, then glanced at the woman, whose expression still remained blank.
"My name is Kiya." The woman suddenly spoke, this time not through her mind, but through her own voice. It was sweet and delicate, like a flower, which was something Kaya didn't expect. "I am the former guardian of The Seven Wonders."
"Seven Wonders? Of the World? Modern or Ancient?" She asked with a slight snort, trying to joke to lighten up the dark atmosphere. "You guard the Pyramids of Gyza?"
Kiya didn't reply but based on how her eyelids slightly drooped at Kaya's words, Kaya knew that she wasn't amused. Her smile faded and she stared at her feet, both in embarrassment and fear. Kiya, then waved her hand, like some kind of tourist guide showing of a museum piece and there was a bright light. Seven orbs floated above her hand, all different colors. Kaya gasped at how pretty it looked, especially the blue one, which she, then realized was made of water.
"Long ago, in a world, far, far away from where your species found their home, five kingdoms lived in peace. Souryn was the planet's name and these kingdoms lived in harmony. To keep the balance are two additional kingdoms, one above land - heaven as you humans call it- and one underneath, which you named hell. Each kingdom had a ruler, all from the same father, Maht, the King of Planet Souryn."
With a flick of a finger, the orbs grew in size, fused and spun around Kaya and Kiya, looking like a solar system. The white walls faded and now she was surrounded by stars. She was in space. Right above a planet, which had a mixture of colors on its crust.
"These kingdoms included; Kiphi Yenna, Kumoa, Khstanpa, Kittsma and Kirunnia. Namely, they were the kingdoms of fire, water, earth, air and thunder. Above the clouds is Helom, land of the angels and all things good. Below the ground, near the planet's core, is Holen, land of the demons and all things unholy."
Kaya couldn't help but stare at the planet below her feet as she took in all the information. Who would have thought that there has a another planet, far from Earth, which was inhabited by people who had natural yet extraordinary abilities.
Suddenly, the mixture of red, blue, green, brown and yellow faded and was taken over by an eerie, purple mist. The clouds, which you assumed symbolized Helom, became drained of color, turning grey and sad. Kaya turned towards Kiya, who had a bitter expression on her face.
"Everything was going well, until the King of Holen turned greedy and decided that he wanted the other six kingdoms to himself as well. Because the demons had the strongest powers among all others, they successfully took over the five kingdoms by slaying their Kings. Helom, on the other hand, is currently in a war with Holen. Light and Darkness... they are each other's strengths yet also each other's weaknesses. It was a war that would last forever."
Then, seven smaller orbs formed on Kiya's fingertips, each color representing a kingdom. This time, they were round and solid, like a gem, only shinier. Each gem had a character branded to it and her eyes widened when she recognized the purple one... which looked exactly like the boy's ring.
"Years before Holen took over Souryn, each kingdom crafted their own gem and sealed part of the King's powers in them, sending them to your planet, Earth, for safe keeping. Bearers are the mortals who were chosen to keep these gems, serving as an heirloom that has been passed down for generations. This served as a back-up, in case their people would become extinct, because there is enough power in each gem to revive a whole kingdom. However, the King of Holen is now after these gems, for he wants unlimited power and he has started sending his minions to your planet."
"The Ignis..." Kaya mumbled, tearing up slightly at the memory of the fire and all the bodies. Her teeth gritted in anger, her knuckles white and she hated the King of Holen for killing so many innocent people for power. Kiya glanced at Kaya, a wave of pity flashing through her eyes, before they turned dull once again.
"During this, I was a citizen of Holen yet I was also chosen as the guardian of the seven gems, The Seven Wonders. Knowing that I had the information of the gem's locations, the King... the King tortured me but I kept my oath and never told him, even until the day he killed me. "
Now Kaya knew why Kiya had so much hatred in her voice whenever she was talking about the King of Holen. She couldn't even imagine what she went through and it was definitely nothing compared to her life in the orphanage.
"Kaya..." Everything around Kaya faded back to white as Kiya floated towards her. This time, Kaya was no longer afraid of her eyes. "The reason why I called you through your dreams was to warn you of your mission and what is yet to come."
"M-Mission?" Kaya only had one idea about what this mission could be but she didn't want to accept it. "What mission?"
"For one hundred years, no guardian has been chosen. One has finally been selected and that person is you, Kaya. Your mission? It's what I always told you. Find and gather The Seven Wonders."
Kaya froze, the information hitting her like a brick. Then, she laughed, thinking that it was ridiculous for someone as normal as her to be trusted with a mission that holds the faith of both Earth and Souryn. Kiya had expected this kind of reaction from Kaya, so she wasn't fazed.
"You're joking." Kaya wheezed and clutched her stomach, only stopping when she caught the intense stare Kiya was giving her. "...Right?"
"...Kaya, I know it's hard to believe but you are the chosen guardian of Souryn's Seven Wonders "
She, then put a hand in her hood and exposed some of her hair. Her long silver locks were flowing down to her chest. "Born with silver hair, eh? That's the first sign of being a guardian. You are no longer safe, you need to keep moving. The Ignis was just the beginning, more monsters will be coming for you."
Kaya unconsciously touched her hair, a muddled expression forming on her face. All this time, she really was different, in a good way.
"Well, my time's almost up. Oh! Speaking of time..." Kiya presented Kaya, her wristwatch but this time, it had a purple glow to it. A slight clink was heard as it fell in her hands. "I added some magic to it. The quartz will glow every time you are near a gem or its bearer."
Kaya glanced at her watch as it ticked and read the time. 7:17 pm. She blinked, did that conversation really only take ten minutes?
"...So, where do I find the seven wonders?"
"I can tell you where they are in the country but I can't pinpoint their exact location." Kaya shot Kiya, a worried look but she smiled a bit, to reassure Kaya and build her confidence. "You'll be fine. Just... don't trust anyone. Even the bearers."
"What? Why--"
"I don't have much time, Kaya." Kiya pat her shoulders, her long nails digging into her shoulder blades and she noticed that purple smoke was starting to surround her. "Since you are a new guardian, I'll guide you. If you need help, just call me and you'll hear my voice."
Kaya nodded, the smoke now up to her waist. She still couldn't believe that an average seventeen year old teenager like her was given the responsibility to save not one but two planets. It was just crazy.
"Oh, one more thing." Kiya said as the smoke climbed up her cheeks. "If you meet the bearer of the gem of Darkness again, tell him that I said hi."
