Carla arrived at her in-laws' house, she had keys, so she entered without a problem, but she didn't see anyone. The house was not very big, so she walked to check if they were in the garden.
A loving family conversed, Sofia was having coffee with Mauricio's parents while he played with little Nicolas.
That scene ended up breaking Carla's heart. The hope she had of keeping her marriage intact had gone down the drain. Her in-laws, whom she valued a lot and considered her own parents, knew everything and seemed to agree with what their son was doing. How could they have deceived her in such a way, she wondered.
She was ready to leave but decided to call her husband. Before doing so, she positioned herself in a place where she couldn't be seen but would allow her to witness everything that happened.
"Hello, honey," Carla said when Mauricio answered the phone.
"Hey, darling," he responded.
She could clearly see every gesture he made, so she couldn't help but notice his annoyed expression when he saw her name on the screen.
"Where are you?" she asked, trying to remain calm.
"I'm about to go out for lunch with a potential client," he replied.
"Okay, then we won't see each other tonight," she ended the call.
Carla was trying to hold back her tears, but what she heard next was the last straw.
"Was it her?" Sofia asked.
To which Mauricio nodded.
"I told you to leave her. I don't see what else you want to get from her," Mauricio's mother added. "You have so much money now, and besides, you bought us this house."
Mauricio remained silent, just continuing to play with his son. Carla decided it was enough. She needed to leave that place, even though she had an urge to destroy everything. She had to calm down and find a way to make them pay for all the pain.
...
Mauricio.
Thanks to my marriage to Carla, I had managed to amass a lot of money. Well, not only because of that, but also because of my hard work. I dedicated myself day and night to being the best, but reaching where I am would have been more difficult without getting married.
Nowadays, I have a lot of money. Besides that, I bought the house that my parents always wanted. I can also provide the life that my beloved Sofia deserves.
They have been asking me to leave Carla for a while now, but I can't do it. I feel like I owe it to her. For some reason, my parents hate her, and I don't understand why. She has always been a kind woman to them, always taking care of their needs.
After spending the whole afternoon with my parents, Sofia, and my son, I returned home. At the entrance, I found a beautiful floral arrangement. It struck me as strange because I hadn't sent anything, so I checked the card.
"My princess, it is sad not to share this beautiful day with you. Happy birthday," the card read.
Damn, I had forgotten Carla's birthday. Maybe that's why she had called me. I took the arrangement and entered the house. It was seven in the evening, and Carla wasn't home. I felt awful; it was the second time I had forgotten such an important date.
...
What had she done wrong? Where had she gone wrong? Why had Mauricio done such a thing? It was all for money.
"If you had asked me, I would have helped you. No need to stoop so low," Carla said as she lit her car.
Carla, after leaving her in-laws' house, got into her car and drove around the city. She didn't want to talk to anyone; she just wanted to disappear.
...
Carla.
I drove around the city for almost three hours; I didn't know what to do, but a couple of drinks would help. In a quiet street, I saw the perfect place. It was a small, cozy bar. The music was low, and the atmosphere calm, just what I needed.
The bar counter was empty, so I took a seat and ordered a glass of whisky. I drank it all in one go, feeling it burn my throat as it went down. I knew this wouldn't solve the problem, but I didn't care. Today, I would just get drunk. Tomorrow, I would figure out how to get rid of that damn man.
I don't usually drink alcohol, but apparently, I have a good tolerance. I had already consumed about 5 glasses and I was still lucid. The hours passed, and with them, the early morning drew near.
...
Not far from the bar, a man in his thirties watched her. Carla had caught his attention from the moment she entered. On one hand, she seemed familiar, but he couldn't remember from where. He hesitated to approach her, but he gathered the courage when he saw someone else planning to do the same.
"Can I join you?" the man said.
"No problem," she replied without looking at him.
"What are you drinking? I'll treat you," he offered.
"Whiskey."
The man observed her closely. Having her close confirmed his suspicion. He did know her. She was Carla Montiel de Lopez, the daughter of the famous lawyer Antonio Montiel and the wife of Mauricio Lopez—one of his adversaries in the courts. They had faced each other on several occasions, but Mauricio had won most of the cases. This filled him with anger and a desire for success.
"Mrs. Lopez, may I ask what brings you to a place like this?" the man asked, trying to grab her attention.
Carla looked at him, expressionless. In that moment, she knew exactly who he was. Although she no longer practiced law and had been pursuing her own legal career for quite some time, she still kept up with all the cases that came to her father's firm. She was aware of the confrontations between Mauricio and Manuel Castañeda.
"Dr. Castañeda. Well, I guess the same as you. Just seeking a drink," Carla responded with a crooked smile.
"It seems like today wasn't your day," he added, returning the smile.
"Perhaps, but tomorrow will be a different day," Carla replied, finishing her drink.
The conversation was pleasant; they had a lot in common, including a deep passion for the law. It was 3 o'clock in the morning when the manager approached them, notifying that they were about to close.
