Mauricio had not been able to sleep, all night he couldn't get the fact that in a few hours he would sign the divorce out of his mind, but nonetheless he had to gather his courage and face the woman who had loved him so much and whom he had not known how to appreciate.
Carla drove to the place where the divorce would be finalized, although she tried to stay calm, the truth was that the sadness was overwhelming, memories kept flooding her mind.
...
Carla.
Marcos approached me as he saw me, his impeccable blue suit made him look handsome, he smiled at me and I returned the gesture, the truth was that he had been of great help in this process, hoping it would be over soon.
"Are you ready?" Marcos asked me.
"I think so," I replied.
"Breathe, this will be easy," he smiled.
I took a deep breath and we headed towards where they were waiting for us, Mauricio, his lawyer, and the notary who would carry out the process.
"Good afternoon, please have a seat," the notary said.
"Good afternoon," we replied.
I could feel Mauricio's gaze on me, but I ignored him. The notary began reading the agreement, listing all the points, as well as the properties.
He made it clear that I wanted to keep 70% of the properties, as compensation for the damage inflicted.
"Mr. Lopez, do you agree with what I just read?" the man asked.
Our eyes met, but I quickly looked away. No matter how strong I wanted to be, this affected me more than I wanted it to.
"Yes," he finally said after remaining silent for a few minutes.
"In that case, please sign here."
I could feel my heart racing. Signing that document would end everything. Signing that document would turn us into complete strangers.
Mauricio took his time, but after hesitating, he signed.
"It's your turn," my hands trembled as I took the pen.
I don't know where I found the strength, but I signed without hesitation.
...
After the notary informed them that they would officially be divorced in a week, Carla rushed out, followed by Mauricio.
"Carla," he shouted, she stopped, but didn't turn around. "Can we talk?"
"I don't have time to waste on you," she said and continued on her way.
Mauricio stood there, watching Carla's figure disappear before his eyes.
...
Mauricio.
Carla kept 70% of the properties, I knew this would happen, so I signed without protesting. I was left with an apartment located in the center of Manhattan and the house we lived in for our five years of marriage, as she claimed she didn't want it.
Both my parents' house and Sofia's house became her property. I don't know how they will take it, that's another problem coming my way.
After signing, the notary told us that the divorce would be effective in a week. Carla, upon hearing this, hurriedly left, followed by her lawyer. I wanted to talk to her, but once again she didn't want to listen to me. Once again, she had left me alone, and I felt so miserable.
When I returned to the hotel, I collapsed onto the bed. I needed to find a job and a place to live. I didn't want to go back to the house we lived in, so the only option was the apartment. After much thought, I fell asleep, and when I woke up, it was already night.
So I called the only friend I had, David answered after two rings.
"I can't believe it, Mauricio Lopez, you remembered that you have a friend," David said when he picked up.
I rolled my eyes, I met David when I was in college, he studied medicine. He was the only person I considered a friend, even though I hardly saw him, he was always there for me when I needed him.
"Don't exaggerate," I said.
"Friend, it's been five months, that's how long we haven't talked," he said.
The truth was, he was right. Between the law firm, Carla, and my double life, I didn't have time for anything.
"Well, if you miss me so much, how about we go out for a drink?" I suggested.
"That sounds perfect, I have a day off tomorrow, so I can get drunk," he replied.
After finalizing everything, we hung up and I went straight to the shower. When I was ready, I headed to a restaurant where we would have dinner, and when I arrived, he was there.
"You're punctual as always," I said.
"Friend, I'm a doctor, punctuality is essential in my career," he said, giving me a hug.
During dinner, I told him about the disaster my life had become. He listened to me in silence, but I knew that after that silence, the "I told you so" would come.
"I knew this would happen because you never listened to me," he said.
"I know, but there's no point in you telling me," I replied.
"I'm sorry, friend. You're right. I don't want to torment you, but Carla is a wonderful woman. I can only imagine how she must be feeling," he was right.
"Friend, I love her, and I've lost her," I confessed.
"I don't know what to say, but I hope Carla doesn't find out about the other thing you did," he added.
The truth was that I had completely forgotten about that other secret. If Carla were to find out about it, she would hate me.
"Don't even mention it," I said.
"Let's not talk about it anymore. How about we go to a disco?" he proposed.
I wasn't sure about going, but a drink would do me good. After finishing our dinner, we went to a famous disco in Manhattan.
The place was crowded, and there was a long line to get in. Luckily, David was a VIP client, so we entered without any problem.
A waiter welcomed us and led us to the VIP area, which was also crowded. Many girls approached us, but I turned them down. I wanted to be alone, to drink, and let out all the pain inside me.
David enjoyed the company of a beautiful girl, but I focused on drinking. When the bottle was halfway finished, I heard a familiar voice.
