Episode 11

Mauricio didn't know how to feel; things were changing, and it scared him. After allowing Carla to go upstairs, he sat on the couch with a bottle of whisky.

On the contrary, Carla slept peacefully, feeling that she had avenged herself a little for everything Mauricio had done.

...

Carla.

After my argument with Mauricio, I went straight to bed. He lay down about two hours later, and I noticed he had been drinking as he approached me for a kiss; I could smell the alcohol on his breath.

The next day, I woke up as usual and went about my routine, deliberately ignoring Mauricio. The good thing was that I felt great, as if nothing had happened. After Mauricio left, I went upstairs and got ready. I searched for a knee-length black skirt and paired it with a white blouse.

I hadn't dressed like that since I got married, as it was an outfit I used to wear when I practiced my career. Now I wanted to return to my life in the courtroom, and today I would attend a trial where Manuel would face off against my idiotic husband.

When I was ready, I headed towards my destination. The place was crowded, so I managed to slip in unnoticed. The trial went well; the evidence Manuel had against the company was indisputable, leading him to win the case. After the verdict was given, everyone started to leave the courtroom, so I left before Mauricio or anyone I knew saw me. I waited for Manuel to come out, and he was one of the last to do so. After seeing him head towards the restrooms, I followed him. We had sex in the bathroom, a quick but pleasurable encounter, almost getting caught by my husband.

...

Manuel hid where Mauricio couldn't see him, feeling worried. Luckily, Mauricio left as if nothing had happened, and a minute later, Carla emerged.

"Wow, that was intense," Manuel said as he approached her.

"Just a little," she replied with a smile. "Do you have time for me?" she asked.

"As much as you want," he responded with a flirtatious smile.

After that, they both left through the back of the courthouse, and Manuel drove them to his apartment. Upon arriving, they entered, and Carla sat down on the huge sofa in the living room.

"Do you want something to drink?" Manuel asked.

"Whisky," she replied.

Manuel raised an eyebrow; whisky was a strong drink, he thought. He went to the bar and poured two glasses.

"How have you been?" he asked.

"Good, I think," she answered.

Carla recounted the recent events in her life to Manuel. She felt calmer now, able to talk about the situation without crying.

"You're a woman to be admired, Carla," Manuel spoke.

"It seems like you're the only one who thinks so," she said.

"It doesn't matter what I or others think here. What really matters is you and how you see yourself," Manuel said, setting his glass aside and moving closer to her. "The day you realize your true worth, those negative thoughts will disappear."

"What thoughts are you talking about?" she asked.

Manuel reclined on the sofa and looked at her.

"I know deep down you think you're to blame for everything," Carla lowered her head. "But you know what I see?" Carla looked up again. "I see a strong woman who has done everything possible to maintain her home. You're beautiful, a professional, and when I add how passionate you are, I could say you're the perfect woman." Manuel's words made her feel better.

"Thank you, Manuel," she said before hugging him.

"It's nothing, sweetheart. I'm just telling the truth, and it's time you see it too," he said, stroking her head. "Now, tell me, what have you been thinking of doing?"

"I want a divorce," she said.

"Well, do you need my help with that?" he asked.

"To be honest, yes. I don't want to involve my father's law firm," she said.

"Okay, I'll start working on it. Is there anything else you need?" he asked, taking out his phone.

"Yes, I want to leave him with nothing," Carla's voice exuded resentment.

"In that case, we'll claim adultery as grounds for the divorce," Manuel called his friend Marcos.

Manuel spoke to Marcos and relayed the situation. Without hesitation, Marcos agreed to help him with the case. Carla remained silent, waiting.

"Well, we'll have the lawsuit ready by tomorrow. We need to gather evidence, but since you already have a child, it should be easy," Manuel said.

"Thank you, I need something else," she said.

"Of course, tell me," Manuel replied. He set his phone aside and took Carla's hands.

"I want to personally deliver the divorce petition," Carla was determined.

"Are you sure about that?" he asked, somewhat concerned.

"Yes," she responded.

"Well, if you're sure, then I have nothing else to say," he said, taking a sip from his glass.

"Actually, let's not talk about that. Tell me about your life instead," Carla noticed that Manuel was upset, so she decided to change the subject.

Manuel smiled. The fact that Carla was interested in his life brought him joy.

"What do you want to know?" he asked.

"I don't know, I'm interested in everything about you. Knowing about your family would be good for me," she said.

"Well, I'm the oldest of three siblings. My parents live in New York," he told her.

"So, you have siblings. What do they do?" she asked again.

"They're university students, studying business," he said. "You know something," Manuel said, approaching her.

"Tell me."

"I'm glad to know that you're interested in me," he told her.

Carla smiled and kissed him. She spent the rest of the day with Manuel, chatting and having a couple of drinks. After that, she took a taxi and returned home, where Mauricio awaited her, upset.
