Carla was broken, everything was still difficult for her. Confronting Mauricio cost her a lot, especially with feelings involved.
Carla walked to her parked car at the entrance, her hands trembling and struggling to open the car door.
"Carla, you're too upset. Let me drive," Marco said.
"You're right," she replied, handing him the keys.
Carla was about to get into the car when Mauricio embraced her from behind.
"Please, let's talk, my love," he pleaded.
"We had eight years to talk, Mauricio. Nothing will change the pain you've caused me," she said, tears streaming down her face.
"I'm sorry, I made a mistake. I love you," he said, tears in his eyes.
Carla broke free from his grasp, then turned to face him. How had they reached this point? How had the man she had once loved become a stranger to her?
"Love me?" she said with a sad smile. "How can you say you love me when you married me for my father's money, when you have another family? How audacious of you, Mauricio. Don't be hypocritical. Don't hurt me any longer and sign the divorce papers," she said before getting into the car.
Mauricio didn't know how to defend himself. She was right; he had hurt her in the worst possible way. All he could do was let her go. Sofia, who had overheard everything, was filled with anger. She didn't know if what Mauricio had said to Carla was to calm the situation or if he truly had feelings for her.
"Is it true what you said? Have you truly fallen in love with her?" Sofia asked.
"Now is not the time, Sofia." Mauricio wiped his tears and replied, returning to the house.
"What do you mean, now is not the time? Then when is?" she shouted.
"Carla, Nicolas is here. Watch your behavior," Mauricio glared at her.
She looked at her little one, sitting on the couch, observing them with curiosity. Sofia approached her child and lifted him up.
"For now, I will calm down, but we need to talk," she told him before climbing the stairs with her son in her arms.
Mauricio sighed and collapsed on the sofa. No matter how much he thought about it, he didn't know where to start. He knew he had to confront Sofia, but first, he needed to find a way to fix things with Carla. Mauricio smiled bitterly. Could he really think about fixing things with her? How could she forgive him after all he had done?
But one thing was certain: he owed Carla an explanation. It wouldn't solve anything, but being honest with her might alleviate the pain in his chest. After contemplating everything, he got up and left Sofia's house without saying goodbye. In his mind, all that mattered was Carla.
...
Carla.
I was devastated. Everything had ended. My dreams had vanished. I felt empty, but I had to be strong and show Mauricio that I was worth more than he thought.
I knew it wasn't worth crying over him, but no matter how much I tried, my feelings for him wouldn't disappear overnight. But today, I would start anew. After confronting Mauricio, I returned to Manuel's office with Marcos. He was anxiously waiting for me, and when he saw me, he embraced me. Truth be told, being in his arms comforted me.
After telling him what had happened, he drove me home. I saw the lights on, so I knew Mauricio was inside.
"If you want, I can take you somewhere else," Manuel said.
That would be nice, but I didn't have to run away from home when I wasn't the one who did something wrong. So I told him to leave, assuring him that if I needed anything, I would call him. He didn't agree with me, but in the end, he left.
Upon entering the house, I saw Mauricio's suitcases at the entrance. I wanted to cry, but I held back. He was sitting on the living room sofa.
"I was waiting for you," he said.
"Tell me what you need," I replied indifferently.
"To talk to you," he said, moving closer.
He tried to approach me, but I stopped him.
"Everything has already been said, so leave now," he sat back down.
"Carla, I'm not lying when I say I love you. I've been wrong all these years," he said, his voice breaking.
You realized it too late, Mauricio. You hurt me, and there's nothing you can do to fix it. I loved you with my whole life, but you never cared. My tears threatened to spill, but I held them back. I wouldn't cry anymore, not in front of him.
"I don't know how to remedy this. I don't want to lose you. You're my life, Carla," Mauricio said.
Mauricio knelt down and hugged my legs. It was hard to see him like this, but I gathered the courage to push him away.
"Stop pretending and go," I shouted at him.
He stood up without enthusiasm, grabbed his bags, and left. As the door closed, I crumbled. It would take time, but I would rid myself of this feeling in my chest.
...
Mauricio left the house and stood outside. Hearing Carla's cries tore at his heart. He was losing her. When did he fall in love and how would he fix everything?
He leaned against the front door for a long time, not wanting to leave behind the house where he had shared so many beautiful moments with the woman he loved.
Carla cried until she felt all her pain had been released. She knew staying in that house would only hurt her more, so she made the decision to leave. Within those walls, they had experienced so many beautiful moments that she had to leave behind.
When she felt calmer, she went up to her room and started packing some clothes. Once everything was ready, she headed towards her friend Alexa's house.
"Carla," Alexa said when she saw her.
"Can I come in?" she asked.
"Of course," Alexa replied, helping Carla with her bags.
Once they were inside, Carla told Alexa everything. Alexa listened attentively and comforted her.
"You can stay for as long as you want, you know you're like my sister," Alexa told her friend, gently wiping away her tears.
"Thank you, friend," she said.
