The next day, Helena woke up early, she did her hygiene routine and went to the living room. William went to the living room and found her there. They had breakfast in silence, William was acting normal as before but Helena was distressed.
William: Shall we start?
Helena: Yes.
William: Today, I want to get out of this chair.
Helena: Really? That's fantastic, that's really good.
William: So, hurry up then.
Helena prepares herself, she puts some things in the room and goes to him.
Helena: Listen, you're going to feel some discomfort but don't stop, if it becomes unbearable, then go back to the chair. Stay strong, hold onto me and trust, above all, trust.
William: Let's get going.
Helena holds onto his arms and helps him stand up, he holds onto her arms making a face, Helena supports him against a pole, while he holds onto her, she moves his legs. William only moves his foot, so Helena helps him.
William: My knee is hurting.
Helena: Is it bearable?
William: A little.
Helena: Keep going like this, maintain posture and let your body stretch, try moving your foot in circles.
He moves it.
Helena: Very good, now try moving the leg from where it is, like taking a step.
He makes an effort, the leg moves but only slightly. He does the same with the other leg and they become the same. When Helena notices that he's about to fall, she holds him in her arms for support.
Helena: You're not going to fall, look at me, trust me, and above all, trust yourself, give your legs confidence.
They stay looking into each other's eyes, William holds onto Helena's arms firmly, they don't have any other reaction besides this, their eyes meet, their breaths heavy, their hearts racing...
William's parents enter and they snap out of their trance, William loses focus, Helena pulls the chair with one hand and he falls back into it.
Otavio: My God.
Juliana: Oh my God, my son, were you standing? Oh my God.
Otavio: That's wonderful, it's amazing, my son, you're making so much progress.
Juliana: Thank you, Doctor, you're incredible, my love, I'm so glad you're getting better.
William: I have to get out of this chair soon to leave this place. I can't stand being in this country, not with a few circumstances.
Juliana: What do you mean?
William: Start a new life, Mom, or enjoy life as it should be enjoyed. Wasn't that what you wanted?
Juliana: Of course, son, that's exactly what we wanted. I just want to see you happy.
Otavio: Who knows, maybe you'll find someone, right?
William: No, Dad, love is weak, people are deceptive, a pretty face doesn't mean anything. Sometimes we don't see the truth and the intentions behind it. But if it's a summer love, who knows, I won't be in this chair anymore, so now the girls might want me, don't you think?
Helena: You made a lot of effort today, we're done for now.
Helena starts packing her things, she remains silent, William leaves the room immediately, Helena is feeling very bad, she knows that everything he was saying was directed at her. William's parents keep talking to Helena but she doesn't hear them, she finishes packing and smiles, she doesn't know what to say, she leaves and goes away.
William was in his room when his father comes in.
Otavio: Excuse me.
William: Hi, Dad.
Otavio: Can I ask how your night went?
William: Fine.
Otavio: Were you kind to the Doctor?
William: Yes, Dad, even a bit too much... remembers the kiss... she slept in the guest room, I asked Lilian to prepare it.
Otavio: That's good, I'm glad you're taking the physiotherapy seriously. Soon, you'll be better, my son.
William: Dad, do we still have the house in Italy?
Otavio: Yes, why?
William: I want to go there when I get out of this chair.
Otavio: Traveling will do you good.
William: Yes, it will.
Otavio pats his shoulder and leaves, William is deep in thought but a small anger starts to grow within him.
