Evelina’s POV
I barely remembered how I got back to my apartment.
One moment, I was standing in that godforsaken room, my heart pounding against my ribs, the truth clawing at my skin. Next, I was locking my door behind me, my breath coming in short gasps.
My father had known.
He had known that Cassian’s family was going to be killed.
And he had done nothing.
I sank onto my couch, burying my face in my hands. My entire life had been built on the belief that my father was a good man. A flawed man, maybe, but still good.
But now—
I wasn’t sure of anything anymore.
I wanted to call him. To demand answers. To scream at him for lying to me my entire life. But a voice in the back of my mind whispered—
What if he lies again?
What if he tells me exactly what I want to hear?
I swallowed hard, my fingers trembling as I reached for my phone. Not to call him.
But to search.
I typed in my father’s name, scrolling through article after article. I had never thought to dig too deep before. I had always taken him at his word.
But now, I looked closer.
And what I found made my blood run cold.
Deals with the mafia. Shady business connections. Silent partnerships in companies that mysteriously disappeared overnight.
I clicked on an old article.
Moretti Family Massacre: A Warning or a Betrayal?
My vision blurred as I scanned the words.
Authorities believe that someone close to the Moretti family might have been aware of the attack before it happened. Speculation suggests a possible betrayal from within the underworld itself. No arrests have been made.
My stomach twisted.
Someone close to them.
Someone like my father.
I shut my phone off, my hands clammy.
Cassian had been right.
I had spent so much time resenting him, fighting him, refusing to believe his accusations. But the truth had been in front of me this entire time.
And now, I don’t know what to do with it.
Cassian’s POV
Matteo stood in front of me, arms crossed, his expression unreadable. “She’ll run.”
I smirked. “She won’t.”
“She just found out her father’s a lying bastard. People don’t stick around when their world collapses.”
I leaned back in my chair, exhaling slowly. “She won’t run. She’ll fight.”
Matteo arched a brow. “You sound sure of that.”
I was.
Evelina wasn’t the type to break easily. She wasn’t weak.
But she was vulnerable.
And that made her dangerous.
“She’ll need time,” I said.
Matteo sighed. “And if she decides you’re the villain in this story?”
I chuckled darkly. “She already thinks I am.”
Matteo didn’t argue.
Because we both knew it was true.
It didn’t matter.
She might hate me. She might fight me at every turn.
But she would come back.
And when she did—
There would be no going back.
