Evelina’s POV-
The car ride was silent.
Cassian sat beside me, his presence overwhelming despite the space between us. His scent—something dark and expensive—lingered in the air, mixing with the tension crackling like a live wire.
I should have been afraid.
Maybe I was.
But my fear wasn’t of Cassian.
It was of the truth.
The truth that he was about to reveal.
The city blurred past the tinted windows, buildings turning into shadows, streetlights flickering like ghosts in the night. We were heading away from the polished skyscrapers, deeper into the parts of the city people like me didn’t usually go.
Cassian didn’t speak. He didn’t even look at me.
And yet, he was in complete control.
Finally, the car slowed.
I turned my head, frowning as I took in the place before me.
An abandoned warehouse.
Rusting metal. Cracked pavement. A place where secrets were buried beneath blood and silence.
A place that felt like death.
My pulse stuttered.
“Why are we here?” I asked, my voice quieter than I intended.
Cassian turned to me, his expression unreadable. “Because this is where it began.”
A chill ran down my spine.
Before I could speak, the door opened.
Matteo stood outside, his usual smirk absent. He exchanged a glance with Cassian, something unspoken passing between them.
Then, without a word, Cassian stepped out of the car.
I hesitated.
My instincts screamed at me to turn back.
But I wasn’t leaving without the truth.
I followed.
---
Inside, the air was thick with dust and time. The dim lights cast long shadows, stretching over the cracked concrete floors.
Cassian walked ahead, his steps slow, deliberate.
I swallowed, my throat dry. “Cassian—”
He stopped.
Then turned to face me.
His expression was unreadable. But his eyes—
There was something there.
Something raw.
“This,” he said quietly, “is where your father signed his death warrant.”
My breath hitched.
“What?”
Cassian exhaled, dragging a hand through his hair. “Years ago, this place belonged to someone else. A man who ran this city in ways no one dared to question.”
I swallowed hard. “Who?”
He didn’t answer right away.
Then—
“My father.”
My world tilted.
No.
No, that wasn’t possible.
Cassian’s father had been—
Murdered.
Gunned down in cold blood.
And now—
I staggered back. “Are you saying—?”
Cassian stepped closer, his voice quiet, lethal. “Your father was in this room the night my family was destroyed.”
The words sliced through me, sharp and merciless.
“No.” I shook my head. “That’s not—”
Cassian didn’t blink. “He was here, dolcezza.” His voice dropped lower. “And he walked away. While my father bled out on this floor.”
I couldn’t breathe.
This wasn’t true.
It couldn’t be.
Cassian must have seen it on my face because his gaze softened. Just slightly.
“I told you,” he murmured. “You were part of this before you even knew it.”
My hands shook.
The world felt too small.
I wanted to scream.
To run.
But I couldn’t.
Because deep inside me, beneath the denial, beneath the panic—
A horrible thought whispered through my mind.
What if he’s telling the truth?
