Cassian’s POV
She had no idea what she was walking into.
Evelina thought she was in control. Thought she had a choice.
But from the moment she stepped into my office, from the second she demanded answers, she had already sealed her fate.
She was mine now.
Not in the way she feared.
Not yet.
But she was tangled in this web, caught between the past and the future, whether she liked it or not.
And soon, she’d realize that the truth she was chasing?
It came with a price.
I watched her leave my office with sharp, measured steps, pretending she wasn’t rattled. But I saw it—the tension in her shoulders, the way her fingers clenched into fists.
She was trying so damn hard to hold herself together.
I almost admired it.
Almost.
With a slow exhale, I turned to the window, watching as the city sprawled beneath me. Lights flickered in the distance, a contrast to the darkness that lived in the corners of this world.
A world she was stepping into.
A world she had no way out of now.
A knock at the door pulled me from my thoughts.
I didn’t turn as the door creaked open. Heavy footsteps approached—confident, steady.
I already knew who it was.
Matteo.
“You’re letting her get too close,” his voice was calm, but the edge was there. The warning.
I smirked. “Am I?”
Matteo sighed, stepping beside me. “She’s not like us, Cass. She doesn’t belong in this world.”
I finally turned, meeting his gaze. “You think she has a choice?”
His jaw tightened. “She does. And you know it.”
I chuckled darkly. “Not anymore.”
Matteo cursed under his breath. “Is this about him?”
I didn’t answer.
He didn’t need me to.
Matteo ran a hand through his hair. “You’re playing a dangerous game, brother. Do you even know what you’re doing?”
I did.
And yet—
I thought about the fire in Evelina’s eyes when she stood before me, refusing to back down.
The way she challenged me. Pushed me.
Made me feel something I shouldn’t.
Something I couldn’t afford to.
I looked back out at the city. “I know exactly what I’m doing.”
But the lie tasted bitter on my tongue.

Evelina’s POV
I should have walked away.
I should have left his office and never looked back.
But instead, I was here.
Sitting in my car, gripping the steering wheel so tightly my knuckles turned white.
Cassian Moretti had a way of pulling people in, of twisting words until you weren’t sure if you were making your own choices or just playing into his hands.
I wasn’t going to be one of those people.
I needed to be smarter.
I needed to stay a step ahead.
With a deep breath, I grabbed my phone and dialed my father’s number.
It rang.
And rang.
And rang.
Until finally—
Voicemail.
I exhaled sharply, my heart sinking.
I didn’t know what scared me more—Cassian’s warnings or the fact that my father wasn’t answering my calls anymore.
Something was wrong.
And I was going to find out what.
Even if it led me straight into the lion’s den.
