*Evelina’s POV*
I barely made it home before my hands started shaking.
Cassian Moretti had thrown my entire world off balance with just a few words.
"You should ask your father about me."
I hated that it got to me.
Hated that it rattled something deep inside me, something I wasn’t ready to face.
Because the truth was—I had questions about my father.
And Cassian had just made them impossible to ignore.
I paced the length of my apartment, my mind racing. My father had always been distant, secretive. He was the kind of man who spoke in clipped sentences, who never told me more than I needed to know. Growing up, I had accepted it. I had learned not to push.
But now?
Now, I needed answers.
I grabbed my phone, my fingers hovering over his contact. It was late, but he would still be awake. He always was.
Before I could talk myself out of it, I hit call.
It rang once. Twice.
Then—
“Evelina.” His voice was as steady as ever, but there was an edge to it, as if he already knew something was wrong.
I swallowed hard. “Hey, Dad. I need to ask you something.”
A brief silence. “Go ahead.”
I hesitated, gripping the phone tighter. “Do you know Cassian Moretti?”
The pause this time was longer.
Too long.
My pulse hammered in my throat.
Then—
“You should stay away from him, Evelina.”
My stomach twisted.
“You do know him,” I pressed.
“That doesn’t matter.” His tone was sharp now, final. “You stay away from him. Do you understand me?”
A slow, cold dread settled over me.
My father wasn’t a man who showed fear. He was calm, controlled. Always.
But now?
Now, there was something else in his voice. Something close to panic.
“Dad—”
Click.
He hung up.
I stared at the screen, my heartbeat thudding in my ears.
I didn’t know what was worse—the fact that he refused to answer me…
Or the fact that, for the first time in my life, my father sounded afraid.
*Cassian’s POV*
I knew the second she made the call.
I had people watching. Listening. Tracking every move she made.
And just as I expected—her father panicked.
Good.
The more pressure I applied, the faster the cracks would spread.
Standing in my office, I rolled my glass of whiskey between my fingers, watching the amber liquid swirl.
She was in deep now.
And there was no going back.
I leaned against the desk, considering my next move.
I needed Evelina to keep digging. Needed her to question everything she thought she knew.
Because once she found out the truth—
She would never look at her father the same way again.
And that was exactly what I wanted.
Revenge wasn’t always about violence.
Sometimes, the best way to destroy a man was to take away the one thing he loved most.
And her father?
He was about to lose everything.
