Chapter 5: My Bodyguard Thinks I’m an Idiot
Lily had barely recovered from Gabriel’s flirty remark when the door slammed open.
"Miss Vanessa!"
A tall, broad-shouldered man with sharp eyes and a permanent scowl stormed into the room. He was dressed in a perfectly tailored black suit, his muscular frame making him look more like a human tank than a bodyguard.
Ah. Right. Her bodyguard.
Nathan Cross. The man who had apparently sworn his life to protect her—and also question every single one of her life choices.
Nathan marched over and stood in front of her, completely ignoring the two mafia bosses she was sitting between. "Miss Vanessa, what the hell are you doing?" His voice was tight with barely contained frustration.
Lily blinked. "Um… sitting?"
Nathan’s scowl deepened. "Sitting. Between two men who have literally tried to kill you before."
Lily winced. "Ah. About that…"
Gabriel leaned back with a lazy smirk. "Relax, bodyguard. We’re just having a friendly chat."
Nathan’s eyes snapped to him, dark and threatening. "Friendly chat? You kidnapped her last month."
Gabriel grinned. "And look how well she’s doing now."
Lily quickly stepped between them before Nathan tried to strangle a mafia boss. "Okay! Let’s all breathe! No murder today, alright?"
Nathan exhaled sharply and turned back to her. "Miss Vanessa, what’s going on? You’ve been acting strange lately. First, you stop attacking these two. Then, you start supporting their relationship? And now, you’re sitting in a mafia hideout like it’s your living room?"
Lily crossed her arms. "Nathan, have you ever considered that maybe I’ve changed?"
Nathan narrowed his eyes. "No."
Lily groaned. "Well, I have! I’m no longer a jealous, petty villainess. I am now a reformed woman on a mission of true love!"
Nathan stared at her. Then at Gabriel. Then at Raphael. Then back at her.
Finally, he let out a slow, tired sigh. "…You’re an idiot."
Lily gasped. "Rude!"
Nathan pinched the bridge of his nose. "Miss Vanessa, you do realize that these two are dangerous men, right?"
Gabriel gave him a mock-offended look. "Aw, you wound me, bodyguard."
Nathan ignored him. "Miss Vanessa, I don’t trust them. And neither should you."
Lily waved him off. "You worry too much! Look, I have to make them fall in love. If I don’t, the story—um, I mean, things will get messy!"
Nathan stared at her for a long moment. Then, in a rare moment of pure exhaustion, he muttered under his breath, "I need a raise."
Lily grinned. "See? That’s the spirit!"
Nathan groaned. This was going to be a long, long job.
