Benjamin...
We've spent all these days traveling as a family and today we're leaving for the farm where my cousins Evelyn and Alyssa live.
Bryan and I left early to go for a run and when we got back, someone I hadn't expected to see was standing in front of the condominium's main gate.
I didn't want to talk, because I imagined she was one of those clingy women who chase after people. However, hearing her words sent me into shock.
"GRACED!"
I'm sure we had sex without a condom that night, but if she took the morning-after pill, there's no way I could be the father of that baby.
She leaves after cursing me.
..."You infernal girl! Not only does she want to give you the belly flop, but she's also trying to curse you!"...
I go to my parents' house, have a shower and we all have lunch together. Being at home is my shelter and refuge.
I go to the farm in my car and give Bryan a lift.
I can't concentrate on their conversation, because that girl has managed to steal my peace. Her gaze, her words are still stuck in my mind.
"Earth to Benjamin!" says my cousin, amused. "Everything okay, man?"
"Sorry, cousin, my mind was elsewhere!"
"Definitely that brunette with the emerald eyes!"
"Don't even get me started on that girl! Can you believe she came to me with a story that she's pregnant!"
"Did you have sex without a condom, Benjamin?" he asks reproachfully.
"It happened, but she said she took the morning-after pill, so there's no chance of this child being mine!"
"Dude, the morning-after pill doesn't prevent sexually transmitted diseases!"
"I know, but the girl was a virgin and I got so comfortable with her, it was something so different that..."
"While it was warm, rolling your eyes, it was good, now you're running away from responsibility?" he asks in a scolding tone.
"I've already said that she said she took the pill..., only if she's lying, but..."
"Wake up, Benjamin! No method is 100%! Although the pill is very effective, it's not 100% efficient! There's always that 1%... just like all the others!"
"I'm not going to go along with this girl! She's out to get me! I'm in the best phase of my life, Bryan, achieving my dreams after a long struggle! I'm not going to let anything or anyone interfere with my life like this! You know how hard I've fought to get here!"
"I can't believe you're going to act like such a jerk and not even try to find out the truth!"
"That would take too long! My parents will want me to stay here for the DNA test and I'll miss out on the opportunities that await me in the UK!"
"I never thought you'd be so cheap, immature and irresponsible!"
"I'm being sensible!"
"Sensible? Please, Benjamin! You're thinking only of yourself and not of the facts and their consequences!"
"What is it, Bryan?" I ask angrily. "I doubt that if you were in my position, you'd act any differently! You know very well what it's like to start fighting to make your dreams come true, only to let a lie take your focus away! I diverted you from what you fought so hard for..."
"If it happened to me, I would never act like that, I would look for the truth and take the consequences of my actions!"
"I don't want to talk about it anymore and I forbid you to tell anyone! Do we understand each other?"
"I'm not in the habit of gossiping, I have my own life to look after rather than taking care of other people's lives! But you should think about how your parents would react to your attitude!"
"They'll never know!" I say and he rolls his eyes.
"I'd just like to see, if someone did that to one of your sisters, how you'd like it!"
"Enough, Bryan! I don't want to talk about it anymore!"
Bryan, you've always been the most straightforward of us all.
After that conversation, Bryan didn't speak to me again, he was upset by my attitude.
The days went by.
New Year's Eve at the farm was incredible, even though my thoughts were racing. Not a day went by that I didn't wake up remembering that girl. The last look I got of her really touched me.
Bryan avoided me every day. Our families started to question if we had fought. I talked to him and even though he didn't agree with what I did, we were okay and he didn't bring up the subject again.
When we got back, I contacted the wedding caterer responsible for Mike's wedding, looking for the phone number of the band that played that day. I wanted to speak to Diana again, but the number had changed. I tried to find her to talk, but was unsuccessful, so I decided to return to the UK with the idea that at least I had tried.
Bryan started talking to me again, but he still disagrees with my actions regarding the matter. He claims that I didn't make enough effort to find the girl.
Now life goes on...
