Dinner continued without further questions, but Carter's mind couldn't stop thinking about Emma and how maybe, thanks to that accident, he could solve all his problems if Emma became his girlfriend just for appearances.
That night, Carter went to bed with thoughts of Emma, which was not very common because no woman had ever kept him awake, especially not a nerdy and poorly dressed girl from the low-class suburbs like Emma.
On the other hand, Emma was in Chantal's borrowed room, staring at the ceiling, wondering... who she really was and if this was truly where she wanted to be.
The next morning...
Emma woke up around noon after charging a phone that Chantal had lent her. She checked her social media, knowing that what she would see would crush her, so before looking at anything, she began deleting all her accounts.
She got out of bed, took a shower, as she was determined to go to her house and talk to Mia about everything, the whole truth.
Emma took a taxi to her house, and when she arrived, it took her several minutes to gather the courage to enter. An anxiety enveloped her from head to toe.
Carter's bodyguard, Ramon, had already investigated Emma's entire life. He knew that her sister had married her boyfriend and that Emma was filled with debt. Carter already had all this information. Ramon
had been waiting on the opposite sidewalk for Emma to appear, to call Carter as soon as he saw her.
"Mr. Emma is here!" Ramon said, looking at a nervous Emma.
"Okay, don't move from there. I'll be there in 10 minutes," Carter said, leaving his house on a black motorcycle.
After a few minutes and wiping her tears, Emma walked to the house. Her mother, upon seeing her, ran outside to greet her.
"What are you doing here?" her mother asked angrily.
"I'm fine, Mother, besides almost being dead for a few days, yes, I'm fine," Emma sarcastically replied.
"You're here, and I see you're fine. Now tell me why you've come," her mother whispered.
"Well, Mother, I didn't expect anything more from you. I know you don't love me, but not caring if I die is on another level, Mother. Believe me, I didn't come to see you. I came to see Mia, so step aside," Emma said.
"You won't go anywhere. Mia and Jimmy are about to leave for their honeymoon, don't ruin it," her mother said, tightly holding Emma's arm.
"Mia, Mia!" Emma shouted while her mother tried to cover her mouth with her hand.
Mia came out of the house, followed by Jimmy, who froze upon seeing Emma standing in front of him, looking at him as if he were a stranger.
"Emma, I'm glad you came," Mia said, hugging Emma.
"Emma..." Jimmy said, getting closer to Emma and Mia.
"Mia, I need to tell you something," Emma said, trying to maintain composure.
Carter arrived on his motorcycle, observing the scene as he approached. He noticed how Jimmy looked at Emma as if he wanted to run to her and kiss her.
Emma was somewhat nervous as her mother stared at her with eyes that seemed ready to kill her. Just as Jimmy was about to reach her, she felt a gentle hand on her waist, and when she looked to her side, she found Carter's face, smiling at her. She was shorter than him, so she looked up.
"Darling, I'm here!" Carter said, smiling, looking at everyone bewildered, and planting a kiss on Emma's lips, leaving her stunned and with a pounding heart.
"Emma, who is this man?" her mother asked, surprised to see Carter as she often browsed through society magazines and knew that Carter was a wealthy man.
Jimmy's face turned pale upon seeing Carter holding Emma by the waist.
"He is..." Emma stuttered.
"Hello, pleased to meet you, my name is Carter Miller. I assume you must be Emma's mother, right?" Carter greeted Emma's mother, shaking her hand.
"Yes, of course, I am her mother!" her mother replied, smiling.
"Hi, nice to meet you, I'm Mia, her sister!" Mia said, extending her hand to Carter, captivated by his beauty.
"Emma, you were keeping him hidden!" Mia whispered in Emma's ear, making her blush.
"And you must be Jimmy, Mia's husband, am I right?" Carter asked, looking at him seriously.
"That's right, and who are you to Emma?" Jimmy asked, annoyed.
"Sweetie, that's not something you ask. Obviously, he's her boyfriend, it's evident," Mia said.
"Sister, let's go inside, we still have time," Mia said, smiling.
"Oh, no, I just came to say goodbye, that's all," Emma said nervously while Carter once again held her by the waist.
"Maybe next time," Carter said.
Emma and Carter bid farewell to everyone, trying to disguise it as they moved away, with Carter not letting go of her.
"What are you doing here? Let me go!" Emma exclaimed, bewildered.
"Just walk, alright," Carter said, handing Emma a motorcycle helmet.
"I won't get on that thing, especially not with a madman!" Emma responded.
"Fine, don't get on. Then your family will wonder why I left you standing here alone, and Jimmy will think I only brought you to make him jealous," Carter said, getting on the motorcycle.
"What... the hell... wait, I'm getting on!" Emma said, putting on the helmet and getting on the motorcycle, while Carter smiled.
