"Evelyn Amaris"
Upon entering the establishment, Mrs. Valeria showed me some essential areas such as the reception where guests must register, the kitchen which is vast and stocked with utensils but currently unstaffed, an even larger and exquisite dining room with a grand central table, a living room with plenty of sofas but a broken television, and at the back, a recreational area with a pool covered in slime and leaves, though it also boasts a dust-covered pool table under a shelter and a soccer field a little further off...
"As you can see, Evelyn, this place used to be quite popular among wolves from various packs!" Her expression saddened, "But today we hardly receive any guests."
"Still, the location is good, Mrs. Valeria," I assured her with a smile as we climbed the stairs to the upper level.
"Well-situated yes, but almost falling apart... I couldn't get it up and running again by myself," She smiled wistfully as she continued, "Up here we have the rooms. As you can see, on the right side of the stairs, we loop around the double rooms, and on the left, there are singles."
"It's really well organized! I think it's perfect," I smiled holding my son in my arms.
He whimpered softly, and as I turned my attention back to him, his little eyes shone, revealing the lineage of his father... I couldn't help but remember his words and the scorn in his gaze.
I didn't want Varun to look after me; I just wanted him to know he has a son. I didn't want to raise him fatherless.
"Are you okay, dear?" Mrs. Valeria's voice broke through my reverie, to which I nodded, even as a tear slid down my cheek.
"Don't be sad, Evelyn. You're much stronger than you realize!" Her gaze and smile were pure tenderness.
I could see a motherly figure before me, tears now streaming down my face as I sighed, reliving Varun's harsh words – I hadn't realized how deeply they'd wounded me.
I felt Mrs. Valeria's embrace, and with my son still in my arms, I rested my head against her chest and wept.
"Shh, it will pass! Sorrow is not everlasting," I felt her hand soothing my back and she urged me to look into her eyes, "See, I can't pay you much, but we do get the odd guest here and there. Would you like to work for me? It would be of great help, since it's just me now."
My heart swelled with joy, the tears stopped, and a smile broke across my face.
"Are you serious?" I asked, wiping away my tears.
"Of course, you have a baby to care for, my dear... A wage and a place to live!"
"Oh, Mrs. Valeria, you're an angel... My goodness! Just the happiness of not having to be on the streets with my son is immense!"
I hugged her in gratitude, and she smiled, saying,
"Alright then, hand over this little angel and let's get your things. You must have clothes to wash and want to put away your belongings and rest for today, right?"
I nodded, and we descended the stairs together, fetched my things from the car into the back-garage of the hotel, and Mrs. Valeria led me to one of the double rooms with a view of the hotel entrance, as it would suit us both... It even had an en-suite bathroom, which was spacious, like the room itself.
I opened the window which nearly fell out; I managed to catch it, hanging on by just one screw... I fed my son and Mrs. Valeria offered some respite, knowing the days had been hard on me. However, I planned to help her out! Miguel fell asleep, and I laid him down on the bed, laying close beside him.
Eventually, sleep took me, and at lunchtime, Mrs. Valeria brought in a tray stacked with wonderful food... I ate until full, thanked her, offered to help with the dishes, but she insisted that I rest.
So, for today, I rested again by my baby's side, contented... As the day wore on, I felt slightly more energetic and less anxious. We had a peaceful day; Mrs. Valeria and I even sat on the grass in front of the hotel, getting to know each other better...
She seemed like such a kind lady, and Miguel was making little noises in my arms, seeming content. The three of us watched the sunset among the trees surrounding the place, enjoying the quiet...
We laughed when Miguel passed gas, which was followed by a loose bowel movement. Mrs. Valeria managed to find us a bathtub where I could bathe my son, so thoughtful she is... After his bath, Mrs. Valeria knocked and came in.
"Supper's ready, will you join me?" She asked, her look one of curious anticipation.
"Yes, it would be an honor!" I replied, smiling, then quickly dressed my little one in something warm since the night seemed chilly.
Holding him in my arms, his eyes shone with his father's lineage. I was startled but smiled as I noticed two men approaching the windows illuminated by the moonlight. One was Marcos; my body froze as I realized the other was Varun. He glanced back and was about to look towards the window when I moved away.
My heart raced—had he seen me? My legs were weak; he looked so handsome in jeans and a blue shirt.
"Are you alright, Evelyn?" Mrs. Valeria approached, concerned.
"It's my son's father; he's downstairs... Please don't let on that I'm here!" I trembled, fearing more trouble, "Please, Mrs. Valeria! I don't want him to hurt me again..."
"Okay, stay calm, I'll take care of it," her smile was reassuring, "Everything will be alright, I'll be right back..."
Mrs. Valeria left the room and I locked the door behind her, took a deep breath, and sat back down on the bed, whispering to my son not to cry, as his father might hear with his keen hearing...
