“Evelyn Amaris”
I owe so much to Marcos for all he's doing for us. I believe this is the first time I'm bathing with my son... It makes me happy, even if just a little, and I feel more alive, though my throat is painfully sore and the cough hasn't stopped. Without him, I wouldn't know what to do right now... But here I am, beneath the shower with tepid water pouring down, holding my son in my arms as he feels the gentle droplets on his tiny back.
I bathed him, and since I had cooled myself with cold water in the afternoon due to the fever, I had already cleansed myself. I've never felt as clean as I do now. Smiling at my baby, I bathed him... After finishing, I was dressing him on a changing table that Marcos set up here, while I stayed wrapped in a towel until Miguel was fully clothed.
Marcos had provided a diaper, and I dressed Miguel in it, followed by a blue and white onesie that made my baby look adorable... Before I could get dressed, I heard shouts from outside the bathroom—it sounded like a woman. Is there someone else here? Could she be connected to Marcos? And maybe she's misunderstood his help!
"Let me go, Marcos! Where's that tramp!" I heard the shouting near the door.
I hastily checked to make sure the towel covered me and held Miguel in my arms as the door lock broke, and a fiery-haired woman barged in, pointing her finger right at me.
"You're the tramp claiming to be the mother of my man's child?"
I was puzzled as I saw Marcos enter the room, not looking at me out of respect, and I was too embarrassed to respond to this unexpected intrusion. Perhaps she's connected to Varun...
"Juliana, come outside now!" Marcos firmly took her arm and tried to lead her out of the bathroom.
"You're despicable, Marcos, defending this wench and in my man's house..." She redirected her fury at Marcos, wrenching free as she continued, "You thought this damned rumor wouldn't spread through the village!"
"I wasn't thinking, Juliana... I was just waiting for Varun to come back"—Marcos tried to hold her again and added— "Now leave and let Evelyn get dressed."
"The whole village is saying you brought Varun's mistress here and are standing in for him..."
"Enough!!!" Marcos bellowed with a menacing tone, his eyes revealing his heritage, which silenced her immediately, "I said leave and wait for Evelyn to dress."
She huffed and left, and Marcos apologized without looking at me before he closed the door... I'm still shocked by the turn of events, yet I feel it's not over... I placed my son on the changing table and started to dress next to him, donning blue lingerie, black leggings, and a white shirt. Leaving my hair untended and damp, I again heard the woman's screams and a man's voice outside.
I wished to stay put, yet the situation involved me, and I couldn't hide. Taking a deep breath and picking up Miguel, I stepped out of the bathroom, only to find Marcos arguing with someone.
"There she is, the whore," the same woman spat, standing beside a man with his back to me.
As she spoke, he turned to face me... My heart sank as his eyes, a piercing yellow-green, met mine—it was Varun!
"Did you make that prank call?" Varun accused, striding toward me angrily.
The woman crossed her arms and smirked. Fear took over, and I stepped back, clutching my child as Varun drew closer, but Marcos blocked him, placing a hand on his chest growling at his brother.
"Enough! Stop listening to Juliana... I've seen the baby's eyes glow."
"That proves nothing, Marcos," Varun snapped, shoving his brother's hand away, "So many women want to bear my child... They'd do anything for it!"
He was drunk! But that didn't excuse his words, which hurt deeply, leaving me speechless and giving Juliana reason to sneer behind him.
"Stop being a fool, Varun. No one could use a baby like that unless it was really yours..."
"Love, don't fall for her trick. The child might be Marcos's, and he's pinning it on you," the woman said, sidling up behind Varun, her hands gliding over his shoulders as she mocked me with her gaze.
"Shut up, Juliana!!... What are you even doing here? You've got no business giving nonsensical advice, especially when you're just chasing after my brother..." Marcos retorted, his back still to me.
Varun chuckled before appraising me disdainfully.
"Marcos, don't be delusional. She says she's an Amaris! The only Amaris I've been with was gorgeous, not like this underfed, scruffy, body-lacking wolf... I'd never touch you, girl—find someone else to blame for your bastard!"
My tears flowed freely. He was too drunk to recognize me, and I was too gaunt to resemble my former self.
"That's enough, Varun," Marcos grabbed his shoulder, but Varun seized his brother's arm and threw him against the wall.
Startled by the sound of breaking things as Marcos hit the wall, I was about to go to him, but Varun stood in my way, his eyes void of empathy, only showing the color of his lineage as he stared me down.
"Get out of my village, and never return... I have no children with anyone, least of all with you!"
