"Evelyn Amaris"
I called multiple times until the line dropped—I can't believe he's not even picking up. I tried once more and went straight to voicemail! With tear-filled eyes, I placed my phone aside to charge it… Despite the gnawing hunger and the onset of thirst, I can no longer live in this car, particularly since there's no more fuel to drive it.
The weather is tranquil, yet it seems like rain might come. I can't risk walking with my newborn son Miguel in my arms, getting wet… I turned my face because I sneezed again, followed by a cough which made my throat hurt. I can't afford to fall ill now, not under these circumstances…
As the morning passed, my son cried even more every time he tried to feed—my milk had dried up, and I had nothing left to give him. I'm stranded in the middle of nowhere! Not far from where I encountered Varun's gang, but I can't risk going back after that warning from the hostile wolf…
Throughout the afternoon, my son cried incessantly, and a light drizzle misted the car windows. I changed his diaper and let him feed, though it caused unbearable pain in my breasts as he nursed.
Tears of pain streamed down my face, but thankfully, he managed to get some milk… I grabbed the now-charged phone and called Varun again; after two rings, he answered.
"Speak!" His voice was stern.
"Please help me!" I faltered, but before I could continue, he interrupted.
"Who is this, and how did you get my number?" he asked, apathetic.
"It's me, Evelyn Amaris…" But he cut me off, this time with a chuckle.
"Who's joking with me now?"
"It's true, it's me!" I interrupted, and he fell silent as I continued, "It may sound strange, but that one night resulted in a son. I need your help—my father kicked me out…"
"You've got to be kidding. Who paid you to mess with me? I haven't seen that woman in months; how could she have my kid!" He paused, but before I could speak again, he went on, "Don't bug me!"
"Varun... Varun..." He hung up.
My only chance to speak to him wasted, and he didn't believe me. I let my phone drop and began to panic. I hadn't told my family who the father was to avoid further conflict, but when I needed his help, he thought it was a prank… Who jokes about something so serious?
Tears wet my face, some dropping onto Miguel's clothes. His little eyes flashed with my lineage's green hue, bringing me joy amidst the sorrow… My son trusts me, and for him, I will do my best. Once the rain stops, we will leave…
The rest of the afternoon was bitterly cold—or maybe I had a fever because nothing warmed me, and the constant coughing scorched my throat. The drizzle persisted; my son was crying from hunger, and my once nourishing breasts now denied even a single droplet for my baby. Even ravenous and chilled myself, I changed my child and covered him with a blanket. I couldn't leave him hungry.
I must find help; the city isn’t far, I believe! At dusk, the rain ceased, and the moon shone magnificently alongside the setting sun… With wobbly legs, I exited the car, leaving it behind, and walked with my sleeping baby in my arms after his cries of hunger shattered my heart…
Dizzy but determined, I pressed on until I heard multiple howls—it was the onset of night, and my vision was dim; my wolf senses weakened. I continued with my son wrapped in my arms, as five wolves appeared ahead, growling viciously…
I stopped to observe them, and they began to approach. I sensed an attack and retreated a few steps.
"Stop! Please," I pleaded, looking back and then ahead again.
"Why would I?" The same aggressive wolf stood in human form. "I told you to leave our land."
"I am leaving, just let me pass with my son, please," I begged, clutching Miguel in both hands, as the wolf halted, looking confused.
"But I gave you the warning the first time…" I stepped back as he advanced and grabbed my arm. "Now you've attracted our attention again… Weak little wolf! What shall we do with you?"
He smiled, and the others shifted into human form and approached. I felt too weak to defend myself from whatever was on his mind, but I managed to pull away and stepped back as Miguel began to cry. The man lunged at me, and I held my son tightly to protect him… A "strong and ferocious howl" stopped him in his tracks.
I turned to see where it came from, and the wolves backed away from me. A brown wolf with a black stripe down its back approached; his eyes glowed the light hue of Varun's lineage—I knew he wasn't Varun.
"What did you think you were doing?" the wolf demanded, morphing into a human. Inked on his arms and chest, he wore dark shorts.
"This madwoman was looking for your brother, and now we've found her here again, close to our land."
"Are you alright?" He approached me with concern after sidestepping them.
His kindness prompted me to nod, but then I was seized by a terrible coughing fit, and he supported me, worry etched on his face. As the blanket fell to the ground, my son's face was revealed, and when the wolf saw the shine of Varun's lineage in my child's eyes, shock was plain on his face.
"Help my child—he's starving!" They were my last words before everything blacked out…
