"Evelyn Amaris"
Before I could utter a word, Varun gripped my arm with such force it caused me pain... I won't beg! He doesn't deserve it, I don't need to, my child does not need me to prove to his own father that he is indeed his son.
"Let them go, Varun!" Marcos commanded in a threatening tone, which caused all of us to turn our attention to him.
"Or what?" Varun released me abruptly, causing me to stagger back two steps, while he fixed his gaze on his brother. "I don't understand why you want to protect this girl?"
"Because we protect family!" Marcos advanced towards his brother and continued, "It's no different with them."
"We'll see about that. I already said I don't have kids with anyone!"
Both morphed into wolves, Marco — as I've mentioned before — is brown with a black stripe down his back and Varun is a black wolf. They both drag their front paws and growl at each other... Varun is drunk enough to fight his brother, and Marcos wants to protect us; I can't let them destroy each other.
The woman who started this mess took off running, scared. I'm convinced she's the one who fed this drunk's delusion because if the two had just talked, it wouldn't have come to this. My eyes widened when I saw the brothers slowly approaching each other.
"Stop!" I ran to stand in front of Marcos, my back to Varun. "Please Marcos, I'll leave!"
Hearing my words, he looked at me, his eyes gleaming even more fiercely, Varun just behind me, dragging his claws along the ground... And with that, Marcos watched him, moved past me, and continued to face his brother, with Miguel in my arms I approached and stood beside him. He towers over those forest hounds, "wolves."
"Marcos, please let me go," I pleaded once more. He looked down at me again, then shifted back into his human form.
"And where would you go?" he asked, eyeing me, his brother still in wolf form and growling at us.
"I'm heading home!" I claimed, still unsure of what it would be like to return.
"Are you sure?" he asked, his voice tinged with suspicion.
"Yes, I don't belong here," I answered just as my son started crying, drawing our attention to him.
Marcos gave me another glance and must have seen the determination in my eyes. He walked to the kitchen and returned with a baby bottle and my car keys.
"Take care of yourself and my nephew. Don't hesitate to call if you need anything..." Marcos handed me the items, then scribbled his phone number on a piece of paper and passed it to me.
Varun resumed human form and walked past us without a glance, which gripped my heart in sadness as he headed to another room... I averted my gaze and then looked back at Marcos, offering him a small smile of appreciation.
"Thank you for everything, Marcos. I will never forget what you've done for us."
I turned and noticed he remained stationary, watching me... I walked towards the exit, opened the front door, and left that brute's house behind. Pausing at the doorstep, I admired the beautiful moon decorating the sky, surrounded by countless stars... Some villagers were out walking and stopped to stare... This place is picturesque, replete with greenery, "trees, flowers in specific spots, and houses resembling those in the city."
Feeling the eyes of the villagers on me, I made my way to my parked car, coughing several times, and my son continued to cry with hunger. Once in the car and the windows rolled up for privacy, I fed him until he finished all the milk in the bottle.
I started the car and reversed, becoming accustomed to driving with my son in my arms. Turning the car, I headed towards one of the exits, at which moment I heard that same "powerful howl" that had echoed back when I discovered my pregnancy! Glancing in the rearview mirror, I saw that massive black wolf standing in the center of the village, its eyes gleaming several times, as did my son's.
It was Varun. How could that fool doubt that Miguel was his son... I accelerated and left his village without looking back, driving onwards until I left his lands behind. If this is how Varun wants it, so it be! I'm not sure what will happen now, but I feel confident and more determined. The pain in my throat hasn't subsided yet, and although I'm coughing from time to time, it's negligible.
I'm entering my father's lands! And by the time, it's the hour for the wolves to change guard shifts, but I'm not approaching from the main entrance, I'm on the back path to the village. I stopped the car beneath a tree not far from the village... I left the car with my son sleeping in my arms and walked a couple of kilometers to the village, the longing for my family growing with each step, not to mention my eyes gleaming several times in the darkness.
Our night vision aids me, so the trek is not difficult. As I approached, a wolf leaped in front of me, halting me instantly. It didn't seem ferocious, just assessing me as it shifted back to human form. "I remember him, a tall, dark-skinned man with brown eyes and closely shaved hair, strong-bodied, he's the beta my father wanted me to marry."
"Evelyn, what are you doing here?" he questioned from a distance, still shirtless.
"I need to see my family!" I said, looking at him. I believe I don't even know his name; we didn't get to introductions. I had only seen him from afar a few times.
"Your father does not want you there. He ordered you not to come close," he stated, his expression grave. "You're lucky it was me who found you."
"I apologize for everything! It wasn't my intention. I knew of my father's plans for us!" I felt compelled to apologize; he might have taken it as a betrayal.
"Don't worry, I know these methods are a bit outdated," he replied with a kind smile. "Marriage by parents' choice, we usually prefer to have feelings for the person first." I agreed, and he continued, "I won't turn you away or tell your father I saw you, but you must leave."
"Don't make me beg; I at least need to see my sister and mother," I insisted, looking at him as he remained silent.
"I don't want to cause you trouble; I just want to see them, even if it's only for a short while."
He looked around, scratched his head, then took a deep breath. His gaze softened, yet another person feeling pity for me... My son stirred, making a small noise which caught his attention. He looked straight at Miguel in my arms and swallowed hard.
"Alright! If your father finds you, he'll send you away, because he's still angry. And if he finds out I let you go, he'll either banish or kill me, so you know you can't be seen!"
